AAs as pick-ups is an interesting idea, but the way MLG has done it makes AAs far less accessible, and essentially relegates them to being ineffective mechanics. I think they would have pleased more people (but not all of them) and still managed to keep the game interesting if they allowed a sub-set of the AAs to be chosen via loadouts, and put the remainder as pick-ups on the map.
I think Sprint/Evade/Hologram would be good loadout AAs giving the players access to better map movement, better evasion, or a decoy when you're pinned and down a player, while still keeping AC/DS/AL/Jetpack playable.
That would keep the loadout system, which has it's advantages, in play, while still limiting the problematic AAs.
That said, I think the reason DS got pulled over AL is sheer player popularity. Much as plenty of people hate AL, there are plenty more that love using it, even if just for griefing. DS was basically ignored unless it was being abused.
