Alright. If anyone has played through Halo on legendary then they know that the little Grunts turn wicked and bring out fuel rod guns. In the last Halo book Cortona explains that once you run out of ammo for the gun it self destructs. So why is it then that only the Grunts FR guns self destructs and not the Hunters' FR guns? Is it simply because it's attached to their arms? If so that does'nt make any sense.

Well, Hunters are not nearly as expendable as Grunts are.

Well since it is attached to thier arm it would be stupid for it to blow up.

Since it's attatched to them maybe they have some way of regenerating ammo for it through their bodies or something.

The grunts FR only explode when you kill them.

i think they blow up cos its just a way of keeping you from picking them up whereas on hunters you cant pick FR guns off them anyway cos theyre built into the hunters armour

I thought it had to do with some sort've fail-safe installed on the FR gun that once the user dropped it (died) it would self-destruct so that it couldn't be picked up and used by a human. Does it explictly say that it blows up once it's out've ammo? Although, even if it does, 'dragonclaws' makes a good point in that Grunts are clearly more expendable than Hunters. Plus, it's not even like the Grunts would die in the explosion - they'd obviously just run away. But, that's not even an issue, because whatever was said in the book was only an attempt to justify why the FR guns explode when you kill the Grunts, who, unlike their larger, meaner, FR gun weilding cousins, drop the gun when they die. If they didn't explode, Bungie would've had to work it so that the player could use them. Simple explination here guys... don't read too far into the books.

The fail safe is ment to stop humans from using the gun.If it is attached to a massive hunter there is no fear of this, thus no fail safe.

actually if u think about it...the hunter gun isnt exactly like a fuel rod gun...watch a hunter shoot it...he charges it up the fuel rod gun doesnt...and also it doesnt look much like what the grunts have....idk i just consider them different...and u wouldnt be able to pick them up cause its in the hunters arm!

Good points, but I was thinking more along the lines of what sfpiano said. Maybe the grunts(and all other covenant, we just havent seen it yet) use regular FR gun technology, whereas the Hunters have found a way to use it more effectivley with their bodies. Maybe they run off the heat of their blood. Who knows.
