Again, I think that the problem here is not the rule itself; obviously there are cases where repeat offenders need blacklisting, and particular threads with rumors/leaks/lies need to be closed. What my main problem is (at least at this point) is that I still don't understand the very subtle differences between speculation, starting a rumor, and spreading a leak.
I still don't understand what you think is subtle about Shishka's sticky on this subject.
I mean, come on. If a picture pops up on the Internet with the Master Chief and the Arbiter fighting through New York City it's going to make its way onto these forums. Hard. There will be nothing that can stop it, fake or legit. Blacklisting the original poster or continually closing threads will only INCREASE the rumors, speculation, and general fervor.
Blacklisting EVERY person who creates a thread, or who posts items that are against the rules in other threads, will seriously hamper it, though. I mean, how could it not? I also don't understand how that would INCREASE anything. How many times do they have to say that if it doesn't come from these boards, it's a fake... PERIOD. I should think that if something like a screenshot were leaked, and it were true, they would just put the thing on this site, and let us go at it, rather than say it's fake, and then have us call them on it when the game comes out.
The case that you state regarding a supposed playable demo is the perfect scenario for blacklisting users and closing threads. In extreme cases a temporary stickie started by Ninja on Fire may be necessary to quell such outbursts, but it's a fan community with many active (and irrational) members. These things happen.
First, apparently noone reads the stickies... evidenced by all the blacklisted people for creating off-topic posts in "Optimatch". Blacklisting people all over the front page is a much more effective, even if it is a shame to have to do it. The sticky also wouldn't stop people from posting about it if it didn't lay down the law. Also, do they have to sticky about all the rumors? Because I have news for you... the mods DON'T KNOW what is rumor, and what isn't (save a couple). So, what you want is for a mod to make a sticky for all rumors, since they don't know what is, and what isn't, true. Also, if they don't make a sticky about it, does that mean that it's true? If so, isn't that a spoiler? I mean, if they don't say it's false, then it must be true, right? Is that what you're getting at? You want to know what is true based on the fact that they didn't tell you it was false. That's ridiculous.
However, to penalize those of us that are responsible (especially if we do something that we did not know was wrong) still seems unfair to me. I guess it may just come down to agreeing to disagree. This rule won't really affect me, since I'm never the first person to find anything, but take the case of the fake UI again. I was moving home from college and had my computer packed up for several days; missed the bandwagon on that one. Despite knowing that it was fake, I really wanted to see it.
If you read the stickies (and the main page) EVERY TIME YOU COME ON, then you wouldn't miss anything. If you want to see it, and know that it can't be discussed here, then find it somewhere else. You make it sound like this is the only place to find Halo news. I've got news for you... it's not. It is, however, the only place to find real, reliable news about Halo... thanks to them not allowing rumors to spread.
Would asking for a link get me blacklisted? Would the person that provided the link get blacklisted? What if I see a picture on the Net, and without linking to it, refer to it and ask if anyone else has seen it? Is that blacklist-able?
Yes on all accounts. Did you even read the sticky? It's pretty exact.
You have one of the most popular video game sagas of our generation coming up on its most anticipated release. Stuff is going to circulate. Fake stuff and real stuff. You just expect us to ignore it on the game maker's own forums? Ain't gonna happen.
Oh, it IS going to happen. Stuff is going to circulate, but not here. You don't seem to get the fact that they don't know what is real and what is fake (most of the mods, I mean), and they don't want to tell us in any event. It's their forum... it's their rules.
