I think it would be cool to change our names.
Wait... what? No! Surprisingly, I do NOT mean usernames!

What I mean... is that it would be nice to be able to change group names.

A thread in a private group I am in inspired me. I don't mean to make this advertising, but I want to explain my reasoning in full so please understand, moderators.

I am in a group 'Owner of the Katana.' It was founded on the principle that members that obtained the Katana in Halo 3 could join. This instantly gives us something in common. But... Halo 3 is the past. Bungie has released two games since then. Each time, we have expanded our criteria for joining to make room for these new games and new people coming to this website. It has, somewhat, worked.

But Bungie.net is in a lull. Halo is moving away. And groups made in such a time? We are becoming relics of the past. People will just make new groups that are relevant to the new crowd.

But we have members that love this group. We want it to continue to flourish. I've been in it for over four years. And if we are stuck in a situation where we have to compromise the thing that founded us (namely: A reasonable criteria to give us a common starting point rather than accepting anybody that wants to come in), while the Community wouldn't suffer, I feel it would be incredibly inferior to being able to keep up with the times and keep our core.

We are not the only group started in the Halo era, obviously. And we are not the only group focused on Halo. But our history is in this group. We do not want to leave it. I do not want my name as the 'group creator' for a new group we could make. We do not want to forsake what started it all.

If we had the ability to change group names, even once, we would be able to redo our image to better fit the future, while keeping everything that is important to our members. We can change descriptions and group addresses and titles as we please. But while the title remains rooted in the past, new members will not understand who or what we are at a glance like we will most likely need them to.

There is a large site update coming up as we all know. It is my hope such a feature or opportunity were granted to us or groups in general to let those of us here for years continue to prosper, unless by some miracle we were granted this privileged sooner. I think this would be a fine feature for groups as a whole, even if there were limitations. We're a relatively old group. And when the Great Journey begins, we do not want to be left behind.

Thank you.

Yeah, I agree with changing Group Names, that would be so handy instead of moving everyone to another group ect.
Maybe.. just maybe in the next hawtness.

Hmm... but what if it is called "Most awesome people in the world" then changes to "Troll Central" without telling anyone?

There are a few other groups I am in as well, and we would want this same thing. Vouch for group name changes!

Then it should be like a self destruct of a starship like in star trek, you need a few of the other officers to agree. In the bungie.net's group case say 50% of the group need to vote 'yes' to change the name?

I support this.

Well, perhaps an auto-message could be sent out informing all members of the change.

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

I think this would be a beneficial feature. It would be another incentive to stick to groups, thus strengthen them further. Strong group interaction is still IMO the core benefit that this site gives us.

There would need to be some kind of limit to it. Perhaps the one and only change thing would work.

I wouldn't hold my breath on getting this feature though. Its possible that we'll get it eventually, but I doubt its coming in the next series of updates, unless Bungie already had plans to add this somehow (which, considering everything already on their plate site-wise, is unlikely).

smart, interesting, seems out of place.

Official fan of Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, (Problem with that?) Halo, and Bungie, also a total gaming junkie.

No. 49% needs to say yes, for obvious reasons.

If we do allow groups to change their name, I'd like it to be a very uncommon gift, like changing usernames.

But there is a lot more to leaving it the same, even if it doesn't make sense now-a-days.

  • 02.02.2012 12:16 PM PDT

It's makes sense that as the site progresses then shouldn't the long standing groups that are still active within the site progress as well, as burrito said maybe one change since bungie is going to be announcing something different?

Trying something once will increace your chances of success, because you tried it. Try someting twice, and your chances increase yet again - seeing as you've done it. Try something a few thousand times, and your chances of success is exponentially increased; this increase would likely provide success every time

Admittedly, I got to the part where you started talking about the group and thought to myself "lolno". But - after reading the rest, I respectively agree. No matter how I think about it, there's no real downside - just benefits. There's about no way to abuse it (unless the group is looking for trouble).

Have you seen my mind anywhere? I seem to have lost it...

0x0 x0x 0x0 000 000 x0x 000
x0x 0x0 0x0 0xx 000 0x0 000
x0x x0x x00 0xx 0x0 x0x 0x0

I have seen you future

I see no reason not to implement this. Maybe one name change every six months? Any more would be obnoxious, but this still allows groups to adapt to changing times.

Chief vs the scarab? I find that hard to believe to roundhouse boot the scarab's figurative emotion out of the gaming zone.

I would love to see this happen. I've seen too many good groups struggle with relevance for this to not be a legitimate concern.

I acknowledge my user name is stupid. However, I promise I'm not.

Disclaimer: The latter is a lie.

Yeah, I don't see why not. Unfortunately, like with many good things suggested on these forums, I doubt it will come to fruition. I hope I'm wrong.

Would of made transitioning Halo 3 in the WorkPLace to just The WorkPLace right before Reach came out a whole lot easier.

Good post, burrito. I know that Achronos and DeeJ have been discussing an overhaul for private groups. Having the ability to change your group name would be very epic. You've got my support.

I don't see you doing anything to help our country.
Except sitting at home, naked, eating twinkies, rubbing your hands together going "Heh. Target Destroyed. Mission Accomplished." Oh wait. that's not helping.

This is actually a good idea.

I think that this is a good idea. Seems pretty handy.

Achronos: And what's this about a "design team" I've been hearing? Apparently stosh is so awesome he's now considered a "team".

I don't see how this could be beneficial or abused in any way. I support this idea.
