It isn't what it was though. So many MLG players would go back if Halo 3 was on the circuit again, thus increasing population. Also it's a group effort. 'People think, i wanna play Halo 3! But there's nobody on it anymore, so i won't help the numbers.' Thats just how things go.
The population has been spread between the 2 games
It's still Halo 3. Halo 3 is just bad in comparison to Reach. There is uncontrollable spread on all your shots, the netcoding is terrible in comparison, and spawning weapons suck in a good percentage of the games.
If as many people liked Halo 3 as you were implying, it wouldn't have died in the first place. Look at the older Call of Duty titles. Lots of people still play them because they never wanted to move on to the next. People did move on from Halo 3, however.
Furthermore, MLG's players don't have to follow their company. They are big boys. If they wanted to hold tournaments for Halo 3 because they loved it so much, nothing would be stopping them from doing so. They could bring publicity to Halo's name, show 343 what is desired, and generate interest for the fans to go back and play it. The thing is, neither the MLG players nor the fans really want Halo 3 back all that much.
Reach is an awesome game. You can like Halo 3, and miss Halo 3, all you want. The numbers don't lie though. Reach could have died when any one of the newer big name games came out. It didn't. It's still here and will stay because it's just that good.
