ok now this is just speculation and ill prolly get flamed for this....mightve already been said, but
tHE earth object shot out a beam of whatever it was(from the trailer)
Now go to Halo 1, i believe the first mission after you land in the Drop pods. When you get to the main base at the first part of the mission, where you must defend the marines, the base itself shoots what looks like the EXACT same beam into the sky. Now, i have no idea what this could mean( i dont think earth is a halo), but i was playing through that level and jus thought id bring it up if no one has.

Actually I had forgotten about that and you are right, the beams are similar. Though there is one big difference, size. In one of Bungie's updates, they mentioned the crater is 3 miles across. This beam takes up about a 10th or so of the crater when it is blasted, so this beam is alo tbigger than the one at the base in Halo 1.

I think that the moon is the actual super weapon, and that the beam launched on earth is going to the moon to set it off and destroy all life in the galaxy
