"It's not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me."

Love this thread. I like how you found evidence from what has been released thus far.

From what has been gathered, "Destiny" appears to be a huge game. I believe it will be an FPS, as Bungie has been highly successful with those, though they've been successful with other genres as well.

I don't believe it will be like a Halo game. It will be somewhat similar, but It will definitely be different from what we've experienced before...

..I hope.

Man did not see this will add to list
Tell you the truth i had a feeling that ODST and Reach were only experiments. But never really gave much thought about it.

Just to add also remember how many animals had to be kicked out due to glitches, this may have pointed that they wanted animals to roam the area. I also believe alot of the open world feelings felt like scripted moments, that kept us from going out, of the map. They all pushed into one area.

Fantastic job gathering all that information; certainly one of the best threads I've read on the forums for a long time. I only hope Destiny is as awesome as we're all expecting it to be.

Personally, Halo: Reach is my favourite of the series because it's such a well-defined, well-realised product, and the other games in the series seem to lack its grandeur. Sure, Halo 2 had an incredible story, but it proper lacked cohesion, and I found it slightly repetitive in its level and mission design.

I actually linked to that in the second post as well as on the first page.

It's definitely insightful and worth looking at.

I'm glad everyone's enjoying this thread. I've been compiling it over the past few months, and had started thinking about it when I made my Destiny map thread, but I felt this deserved a thread of its own. I wasn't going to post it until I was sure I was confident in my research and conclusion (and I attended both of Bungie's PAX panels about ODST and Reach, so they were still fresh in my mind).

I believe it will be a story delivered through a first-person medium, but it may not necessarily be purely a shooter. I see plenty room for magic (or something comparable), bow/arrow, hand-combat, freerunning (think Mirror's Edge and Brink), space-flight...really, it could be anything.

Halo is driven by the run/gun approach, and I think Bungie may be bored of that. There's so much more that you could do in Halo that just isn't possible due to the constraints from design.

Amusingly, these are all things that the community tend to just do anyway; jump-tricks, getting out of the map to explore, trick kills...etc.

I mean, look at assassinations. That's something that was entirely new to Halo for Reach. I'd forgotten to add that, but it seems like something big hint-wise.

Bungie's always been great at sandbox development too, which is what I think we're looking at here.

The only thing is that we don't have an idea of what the ultimate gameplay goal, or storylline is for Destiny yet. We have an idea of general setting, general sandbox gameplay...but not much beyond that.

Unless we get more hints, or actually wait until the announcement :P

They are going to try out some nice valve problem solving and some more strategic thinking type of games.

Somehow have the feeling of Half-Life or Portal not in sci-fi but in the way you approach the game.

I understand nothing because my life is a conspiracy.

What you said about Reach made it my favorite Halo game. It shows how much effort Bungie put into their last game, even though they would just loose it in less than a year.

Also, awesome read. I've had some thoughts on how at least ODST was used to test new ideas.

We should know better, because we are better.

That is some nice work. In truth, I would much rather have a smaller world that is very content-dense (Think Arkham city with it's hundreds of trophies and quests) where all the fun is right there compared to a wide open world that is less content-dense (Think Skyrim).

Between the two, Skyrim has more content, but to get to it you have to walk all over the place or sit through a loading screen while you fast travel. Arkham city, on the other hand, gas fewer quests but dozens of other goodies you can find, all of it being a few moments away.

I found ODST to be similar to the Metroid Prime series in many respects.

Like ODST:

-Metroid Prime games are thematically dark and moody
-Metroid games are famous for their heavy ambiance
-The Metroid Prime games feature large nonlinear game worlds
-They feature 3D maps which expand as you explore new areas
-They have meta stories which are revealed through exploration of the game world (like Sadie's story)
-The Metroid Prime games make use of an extensive visor system
-Metroid gameplay focuses on exploration and finding hidden items and objects

These things are all present in ODST. However, unlike Halo 3 ODST, the Metroid Prime games place a heavy emphasis on puzzle solving. The combat in the original Metroid Prime game was so light that it was referred to in development as a "First Person Adventure".

Perhaps with their new game, Bungie is moving in the direction of more adventuresome exploration based gameplay with less combat and more emphasis on environmental puzzles. It's certainly something I'd love to see.

Oh and OP, have you noticed any subliminal clues about Bungie's new game in Reach?

A really neat collation of data OP.

I really hope that whatever Destiny is or becomes, it truly pushes the boundaries, or defines something previously unimaginable. I guess I'm harking back to the awesomeness of when Halo was a new and original concept for a console- and I'm keen to see what Bungie can now do given free creative reign.

I agree with everything you said except about "large nonlinear game worlds" Metroid is linear in my sense, it's not an open world or a sandbox game, you can just choose an other way to get your objective, but i think the level structure is quite linear (like Gears with the "2 way you choose").

Nice work Sars, great read.

I must agree with many comments that have already been said in this thread. I expect Destiny to not be classified as a "MMORPG" but it's definitely on a bigger scale than most other games. I watched the youtube video you linked of the biggest game ever (in terms of in-game storage space) and Destiny would work perfectly in that style.

Bungie is known for putting in game spoilers in previous games (as many of us know), and I expect there will be other game facts and theories released that we don't even know about yet.

Awesome job on actually getting hard proof of theories and facts that actually exist, rather than just theories or thoughts put together at the last second to make a thread. I'll be sure to check in here regularly. :)

I'm amused that DeeJ did a Community Mine Along. Seems fitting to discuss and document how creative your Community is with a sandbox that allows you to create almost anything you want...almost like what I'm wondering about in this thread with Groknok.

Read this article with this thread in mind, and see what you think.

Mostly, it's just a lot of fun, but still. Fitting!

Do you have a link to what Grognok.
Link being article on it. I will be looking for it right now.
Also noticed how the mountains in the vidoc were duplicates. Look like they are following what the video did. Grognok may just simplify it alot easily, by copying and putting different sizes on each other, at random.
Read what is its description and what it is

Heh, I totally forgot about that panel. Looking at that, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if those were the starting points (or just ARE) of the prototype Bungie showed to publishers of their next game. Plus it just looks so fun and just so awesome. Like a huge evolution of what Bungie seems like they wanted pre-Xbox Halo to be.

If you go to 6:30, you see stuff like massive space battles, the boat prototype talked about in the last Bungie Podcast (which I coincidentally listened to a few days ago because I'm a hopeless fanboy, and because I couldn't sleep), massive in-city battles, and enemy boarding. The giant Chieftains make me think of Drinnols, and are probably what the Guta's were made of.

So I've been thinking about Joseph Staten's comment about "Wouldn't it be great if we could make a world that was always there for you? Wow. That would be great."

I'm thinking he's referring to some sort of day/night cycle on a planet that basically simulates day and night. Whether or not it's synced to realtime or not is a different matter, but we've already seen in the O Brave New World ViDoc that they have realtime sun rising and setting, as well as an entire shader for creating realistic lighting based on the positioning of the sun.

On top of that, it would go with the idea of how Reach explores not just a variety of geographies, but also times of the day, as well as weather.

I sort of think of it like how Minecraft works, but done like how it works in real life, where half of the world at any given time is always in shadow, and the other half in light.

I was also thinking about how this idea of a full planet (or continent) would function with the idea of cutscenes. If it's realtime gameplay and exploration in a sandbox. I figure Bungie will be taking a leaf out of Rockstar's book with Red Dead Redemption and GTA, and having--what I'll refer to as--rendezvous cutscenes, where they could occur at any given time of the day depending on when you meet up with the quest-giver.

Or maybe the course of the game would depend on the choices you make in reaching your quest-givers in specific timeframes.

That would be interesting. Especially if it coincided with the possible world factions (Dead Orbit, New Monarchy, etc).

I've noticed that they have been working towards this, too. In Halo, especially on Assault on the Control Room in Halo: CE, if you drove a Warthog, Ghost, etc. to the end cutscene, you would see it where you parked it. Also, in Reach, you could customize your Spartan and use him in the campaign, so maybe the scenery can change for cutscenes, just like your armor.
