1st Person RPG would be optimal.
LOL.
No.
First Person as a perspective really only works with Shooters in my honest opinion. For everything else, third person is definitely the superior of the two. It allows the player a better glimpse of the action, allows for a more dynamic gaming experience, it's just all around better. Some people will say that a First Person Perspective in something like an RPG is still valuable as it makes it feel as though you are seeing through the eyes of your character, but quite frankly that isn't worth killing the gameplay to accomplish.Or, ya know, you could have the ability to switch it off and not have to worry about which of the two is better.
Even if you try to include both viewpoints, ultimately you end up designing the game around the default viewpoint, the other exists only as an option. Skyrim chose to make it's default viewpoint the first person perspective, and because of that, many doors were slammed shut when it comes to design space.
Have you ever noticed that there are no enemies in Skyrim that are designed to mob up around you and attack you from the flanks and rear? The reason that those enemies don't exist is that they would be too difficult or frustrating for the player to face without use of a motion detector. You simply can't keep them all in view at once, so it's impossible to dodge their attacks properly.
If the game was created from a third person perspective however, this wouldn't be a problem, as the player can view the surrounding enemies easily with a detached camera. Not to mention, the third person perspective offers the player a better chance at being mobile in combat, as they can easily see obstacles or cliffs that they would otherwise run into / over in first person. This in turn opens up design space for enemies who's attacks cannot be tanked, and must be dodged, which in turn leads to more exciting combat, which in turn leads to a better experience.
Do you see what I mean? First Person is just so much more limited than third person.
