"It's not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me."

With the impending site update, and the hints from the webteam about a revamp in the forums, I figured now would be a good time for this discussion.

I'd like to propose a change with the title system. I don't want to be rid of them, but I do think there can be some improvements added (if possible).

I'd first like to suggest a change in the base titles. Currently they are, Member, Heroic Member, Legendary Member, and Mythic Member.

Seeing as Bungie has moved on from Halo, and since almost everything Halo will be frozen, I propose a change. Rather than keep these Halo titles, let's change them to Bungie titles.

Member, Middle School Member, Old Skool Member, and Grizzled Ancient Member. (Perhaps get rid of "Member" entirely from the system, except for new users.)

Bungie themselves have been using these titles for a long while now, so why not transcend them to this website?

My second suggestion would be more of a customization in terms of prefixes. Currently there are nine prefixes (one of those being hard to attain since you have to be inactive for 2+ months). While these are nice to have, some users prefers certain prefixes over other ones. What can be annoying to users is that some prefixes trump others, so if someone is trying to attain an "Intrepid" prefix, it may be skipped and go straight to "Fabled."

What's nice about these prefixes is that there are a lot, so the same prefix doesn't show up all the time.

I propose a change to the current system. Rather than a system that automatically selects a prefix for you, how about once we have met that requirement, we are able to select which one we want? Even better: Once a user hits a certain base title, perhaps having that user input what they want their prefix to be?

While I believe a system similar to this was briefly discussed within the webteam, other responsibilities came up so these discussions may have died down, if not fizzled out.

My thread isn't a discussion on if the entire system should be scrapped or not, so please don't make it so.

What are your opinions? Do you like these proposed changes? What are your suggestions to the title system? Would you like more customization than what I proposed, and what suggestions do you have for more customization?

Yes. I'd like to see some changes, maybe see titles reflecting whereever Bungie is going with their new IP. I'd like to be able to pick/choose, since I'm sure I have more than one option. Maybe some new colors for the bars.

"At the end of this day one shall stand, one shall fall"

So, Death or Bungie?

Insta hot topic. Nice read.

Im not to certain about the example titles you gave, but i do like the option you gave about customization.

“Strange,” mused the Director, as they turned away, “strange to think that even in Our Ford’s day most games were played without more apparatus than a ball or two and a few sticks and perhaps a bit of netting. imagine the folly of allowing people to play elaborate games which do nothing whatever to increase consumption.”

I would agree.

I would also say that in the case of Grizzled Ancient Member, I'm not sure that adding more prefixes will enhance anything.

Fabled Grizzled Ancient member is a bit wordy. For Old Skool member, same detail.

I play for fun and armory completion. :)

To me, it sounds like Old Skool, Middle Skool, and Grizzled Ancient would be better age related prefixes rather than replacing the currently main titles. I do like the idea of choosing between what you qualify for however.

Bye.

I think removing the base titles altogether and using the prefixes would suffice; Fabled member, Honorable Member, sounds pretty alright to me :). Possibly adding additional prefixes wouldn't hurt so the site isn't complete cluttered with 100000's of the same prefix, although changing the criteria to make the prefixes harder to get as you go up would counteract having an off-balance scaling system.

I've always wondered, if everyone posted consistently at the same rate would everyone be fabled members?

Old school Bungie, born and raised,
In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

I strongly disagree with copying the "school" format for titles. They are attractive because they have them, but once it becomes a commodity en masse, it just looks like copying.

I guess what I'm trying to explain is that I believe applying those titles to the community would ruin them.

I do like the idea of "unlocking" prefixes and giving users the choice.

Sure, why not.

However, in Bungie's next game maybe the difficulties, if there are, will be called just the same. So it wouldn't make much sense to scrap the current titles.

I also think there should be something above Grizzled Ancient. Some people have been on this site way too long to be grouped in the same category as someone who's joined in 2009.

Yeah, that's right guys. There's '09 Mythix. Reach Era Mythix. How special do you feel now?

Being allowed to have a selection of your account's historical title unlocks.

E.g. "Today, I want to be Intrepid. Not Fabled."
*clicks drop-down menu and selects 'Intrepid'*

Personally I'd rather be rid of titles but since they're here to stay, I'd like to be able to choose prefixes. I like the heroic, legendary, mythic rather than what you propose though.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

Almost like nameplates I am guessing.

We get a section on our profile and we get to choose our titles if we have earned them and they an unattainable if we get banned for some time.

I like the idea, the titles should be

Newbies
Middle sckool
Old Skool
Grizzled Ancients
Elder

*special titles
Webcam MVP
Forum ninja
etc

*prefixes
Some new prefixes would be cool

Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.

I'd like an "opt out" option for titles, not just having one, but even seeing them.

Where a member would select a checkbox and their title would go to "Member+" or "Refuses to wear a hat" or something that indicates that they don't display their title and they don't SEE yours.

For example, I would gladly choose an option that made all member titles not display for me (or all ninja). It would instantly eliminate any claims or perception of "moderator favoritism" or bias for/against people based on their title bar.

It would also allow (for users who chose this option) to display to others that when they post/read, they are looking at your words and not your bar.

But I would consider such a feature as small measure and not a "must have" because the fact is that I mentally perform the same filtering/ignoring that I have described.

2004+ would be Grizzled. I'd say Up to December 31st 2006 for the next tier. Then 2010. Then current. At least for now.

Eh I kinda like the current system. Allowing people to chose from the prefixes they qualify for would be like allowing Mythic members to become Heroic.

If they want to I don't see the problem.

I am thinking of this like nameplate unlocks.

Where you can customize your title if you have unlocked it based on the Bungie.net system.

So you can be a Fabled Legendary for a while or switch to Elder Mythic if you earned it.
