If it was being developed for the new consoles then why was Bungie advertising for PS3 developers?

Hence my points exactly. 60+ million PS3/PSN and 66+ million Xbox/Live why would they develop an online game and ignore that sort of player base of over 125+ million?

On the flip side why would you have a 10 year deal and a brand new universe and a brand new game/series and not already be developing for the future 5-10 years plus new consoles?

To me it is as plain as day what Bungie are up to in terms of multi-platform and multi-generation support. I just don't know if it's all in the one game, as add-on DLC or sold as separate games but I believe it's going to all be tied into one universe.

I'd reread that article mate, it's figures and textual context are all over the place. A poor copy and paste job of an article.

Here's an exact snippet of just the title alone
Microsoft's Xbox 360 Division Sees $1.32 Billion Profit For Fiscal Year 2011.

It's also a totalitarian summary of entertainment and devices division of Microsoft, not just Xbox & Xbox live (which includes the Xbox 360, PC games, and Windows Phone).

I think it is great you want to reference sources but at least get credible statistics that pertain to exactly what we are talking about.

When you factor in PC and phone as well as devices such as surface and many other you can see why they cook the books that way.

You also have your facts wrong, xbox have not lost money on their console sales for quite sometime now. Every sale is profitable these days and have been for a long time.

Suffice a means to my argument ends, I have better things to do with my time mate. You disagree fine, enjoy your mindset. Good day sir.

You're right. But I've at least attempted to support my argument. I could have a thousand unreliable sources, but as long as you continue to fail at backing up your argument with anything other than conjecture, statements of grandiose, and assumptions, I will remain entirely unconvinced of your position.

I also stated that: Here it states that hardware costs for an Xbox 360 are $170 greater per unit than what they sell. For simplicity's sake, let's assume this stays constant.

I acknowledged it was an assumption, implied that it wasn't entirely true. For future reference, it just seems confrontational when you attack argument points that have already been addressed.

You're right. But I've at least attempted to support my argument.

Fine you want statistics from third party websites. It's silly to even have to bother but I'll placate you with actual relevant data, I hope you give up this silly argument in the face of facts now.

Link 1 - The only article and snipped needed

In the Entertainment and Devices Devision, Microsoft saw revenue rise to $4.2billion, up 15 percent, as sales of the Xbox 360 climbed, reaching 8.2 million units for the quarter, compared with 6.3 million units in the same quarter the previous year. However, the division's profit fell 21 percent, to $528 million. Microsoft citied a variety of factors for that decline in the E and D profits, including the cost of integrating Skype following the completion of that acquisition , payments made to Nokia related to Windows Phone strategic acquisition, higher Xbox Live royalty costs...

Now if you read into this and assimilate the information correctly you'll see the xbox console/Kinect sales are the reason for the huge profit. You will also notice xbox live isn't even factored in these figures which exponentially far more profit the longer subscribers stay on the service.

You'll also see this is only Q3 of 2012. They've had similar performance throughout last year as well.

You'll also see due to the division structure and statistics like this that this type of reliable source you request are in fact pointless because Microsoft roll things like Nokia/Window Phone payoff and Skype purchases into the same divisions. It's all for tax breaks and profit adjustments mate. Again just backs up my points about using plain ol'fashioned logic and your own assessment instinct to know just how profitable xbox/xbox live are.

Link 2 - 2006 article shows xbox360 console already profitable and lowered manufacturing costs by 40 percent

No need to even explain this.

Link 3 - improved specific details from your article

Microsoft has really been on a roll. Every month, along with NPD data, we hear how the Xbox 360 is the top selling console. Now, in Microsoft's just released fourth-quarter and year-end earnings, we see that Xbox 360 shipped 13.7 million units (up from 10.3 million in 2010) and operating income more than doubled for the Entertainment and Devices Division from $618 million to $1.32 billion.

Entertainment & Devices Division revenue grew 30 percent for the fourth quarter and 45 percent for the full year, due to the ongoing momentum of the console, Kinect, and Xbox Live. Xbox 360 has been the top-selling game console in the U.S. over the past twelve months, the company boasted.

Regarding full-year revenue, Microsoft stated: EDD revenue increased primarily reflecting higher Xbox 360 platform revenue. Xbox 360 platform revenue grew $2.7 billion or 48 percent, led by increased volumes of Xbox 360 consoles, sales of Kinect sensors, and higher Xbox LIVE revenue.

Looking specifically at the fourth quarter ended on June 30, Xbox 360 shipped 1.7 million units, compared to 1.5 million a year earlier. Xbox 360 platform revenue grew $293 million or 29 percent.

If you care to look here you'll see the xbox is the over-performing part of the entertainment and devices division, which just further supports my points.

Link 4 - Here you will note xbox is the dominate console for sale and has been for some time

For the 3rd quarter of 2011...8.2 million Xbox 360 sales reported by Microsoft.

Again every quarter Microsoft are reaping hardware profits, increased xbox live subscribers, increased installed player base and frankly have more money rolling in from xbox than any other division without the capital outlay, corporate payoffs and book cooking many other divisions get rolled into.

I thank you for the debate but you're flat out wrong and any further conjecture will not be entered into. Sorry OP for derailing your thread, I've tried to make other posts to contribute more on topic. I agree with OP that Destiny is for next gen, however, I also think Bungie won't ignore the current gen either.

I am not sure if this has already been mentioned in this thread, my apologies if it has, but one of the Bungie staff members already said in an interview that they are making the engine able to support both this gen and next gen hardware. I think it would be fantastic to have Bungie's next game ready for the 360 and PS3 now, but ready to take full advantage of the next generation as well.

Now that is a reference link I'd like to see. I recall a Bungie interview article talking about that, and engineer I believe. However I don't think it was confirmed as 100%.

Thank you, for the love of God, you've figured it out.

I agree with the data that you have presented, and that the Xbox 360 has been making money for roughly 5 years now (though that amount has certainly changed throughout those years), but I still hold to my interpretation of Microsoft holding off for several years before a new console is introduced. I also side with Foman's analysis that AAA titles don't release across two console generations.

It's nice to see some mature debate here on Bnet, kudos. Yes the statistics on xbox/live are insanely mixed results at best. Hence why I didn't want to go there.

I can certainly see the historic industry pattern on both points in your latest reply. Sure that's a distinct possbility but I just don't see Bungie taking the same old easy road. I guess I'm willing Bungie to bite off the games(s) I've envisioned for them.

If anything could topple WOW/COD games this would be it. Imagine the console/generation fanboys taking each other on and the modders creating assets/quests...it would be insane and honestly could propel Bungie into becoming an uber-Unreal engine provider as well.

I agree.

Bungie is absolutely poised in a position that could put them far beyond competitors. Bungie has "announced" Destiny so that fans and gamers know that Bungie isn't out for the count, but I strongly believe that there is so much effort being placed on keeping it dark so that it can be released suddenly, unexpectedly, and make such a big splash that other developers can't keep up or retaliate.

There is so much stagnation going on, that a truly new game could tip the scales, just as Halo did in 2001.

"We live in a special time; the only time where we can observationally verify that we live in a very special time" - Lawrence Krauss.

I was a finalist :P

There is minimal information on the next generation of consoles at this present time, as well as no official ETA. My estimate is that it'll probably be released sometime approximately in 2014 or later.

It's unknown of the exact length of time Bungie have been working on their new IP, but ideas on the project could have begun prior to Halo Reach's launch in late 2010; maybe even going as far back as Halo Reach's announcement.

While time and patience are a virtue when creating a game, would Bungie be able to wait for a next generation console before they release there new project, when we don't even know the exact time of its arrival? Bungie may already have a release date in mind, knowing that the new consoles will come into fruition sometime in the not-so-close future.

Frank O'Connor said he doesn't think the Halo series needs to be taken in a radical new direction... it just needs to go "deeper"

"Ultimately the core game mechanic and strength of the universe doesn't need to be changed, it just needs to be taken deeper. We want to make Halo games - we don't want to make Call of Duty or Ridge Racer. We want to make Halo games because we understand what's special about Halo."

When that console comes out, I'll be already be earning a regular income, and maybe live alone.

But seriosly, It wil take a long time for that console to be released. I still remember the day I started saving to buy my 360 Slim.

You two have really gotten me excited about Destiny. The path of your debate was interesting and I'm back in hype mode, despite we only have the slightest inkling of what they're doing, you've managed to reason out that it can truly be groundbreaking, and it's not just slightly grandiose thinking as I had imagined before.

I haven't had hype-inspired butterflies in my stomach for a while. This is nice.

I can confirm, if not already stated before, why it wont be next-gen:

Bungie were hiring for PS3.

EDIT: Yup, late, should have read the posts.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

The secret is this.... bungie could make a bad game.... and we would all buy it.....

READ IT.

I won the Star. With this on Week 18.

I do not see a new console for another few years yet... When DVDs are finally abolished, that is when the next step will happen.

Also... check Bungie Jobs... normally gives away what they plan to do... AKA... hire for PS3... That isn't next gen dude... Do not take media as a legit source of info... ever.

Entertaining the idea that Destiny would be on next gen consoles briefly, I'll make this remark on your comment.

If a developer was looking to expand to the PS3's successor, because so little is known about it, it would seem logical that you would hire people who knew the next closest system, the PS3.

All the tech publicatons that I've seen have the nex gen Xbox earliest projections for release in 2014 - but popular opinion is that it will not be until 2015. I think if thats true, that too long for Bungie to wait to release Destiny....but Ive been wrong before.

Cool thanks and it's great fun to speculate. Bungie.net has always been full of such ideas during game development and prior to retail release.

These are not mutually exclusive, just because Destiny may support PS3 does not mean it won't support the next gen.

My speculation is about thinking outside of the box, your post does not.

You're reading too deep into this. Destiny is "so secret" because it's Bungie. That's what they do.

On the topic of new consoles, I hope it's a LONG time before this actually happens. My wife, stepson and I currently have our own 360's. Since quitting my job, our income has become severely dwindled. If a new console was necessary, we'd get 1 to share between the three of us. We'd also have to enforce some kind of time limit on using it. Maybe... no more than 3 hours per day, per person. Something like that.

In Halo 3: ODST there are billboards saying "Destiny Awaits" or something like that and there's a picture of Earth. Maybe it's related to that, you know, like their classic hidden message of their upcoming project.

Here is the link of the picture.

Even if Bungie release Destiny only for 360 & PS3 for now doesn't mean the universe and game engine aren't built for the next gen also.

Sure 2014-2015 is a possibility but I don't see Microsoft letting Sony or possibly Apple etc getting a foot hold into the market. Microsoft's new console will be earlier than people expect.

Corporate IP, game engines in development and particularly console releases are always shrouded in secrecy, we'll just have to see how it pans out.

While I wish you well in finding a new job mate...

With the average age of gamers approx. 34, all the home cinema equipment owned now and consumers preferring to spend their money at home these days new consoles and games are excellent value for money.

The percentages are weighted to gamers having more money to spend on such entertainment than most other forms.

Pretty sure the other night I say a Destiny logo in Powerhouse, upstairs where you exit out the back under the flag spawn roof. I haven't gone back to look yet but it seemed like the circle with dots around it.
