Where are you guys getting 2013 from...? The 360 is scheduled to last through 2015.

You clearly did not read my post very well. You also did not read the links articles.

Here's some more relevant articles for you -

Xbox Euro boss from August 2011

GC: So those 10 years, they won't be the Xbox 360 alone? The Xbox 720, or whatever it's called, will presumably be leaking into some of those 10 years?

CL: Could possibly be the case. I'm not going to announce specifically or talk about timing. But you could imagine there could be overlap, it depends. We're not being specific about the next generation at this stage. We're very fixated on what we're doing right now and the success we're enjoying.

A very realistic article with great resources and insight. Basically a chance for late 2012 but a definite on next gen for 2013 or 2014.

Games certainly push the limits of console in RAM

I'm not sold on new consoles yet. The proliferation of the internet into consoles have extended their lives with updates and enhancements dramatically, and we've also seen hardware upgrades with the Xbox 360 Elite, slim, and Playstation advances (sorry, but I'm not well versed in the iterations of this console). I also haven't seen games truly push the limitations of the consoles, not like Halo 2 pushed the Xbox. Not to mention that manufacturers hemorrhage profit on consoles for several years due to the long development costs, this past generation especially. If a new generation isn't drastically needed, I don't believe it will show.

I think these clues point towards the next console generation being quite distant in the future, conservatively 3 years, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were still 5 years off.

ISU Cyclones!

I think we're close to new consoles, but not quite there yet. Graphics improvements really won't make all that big a difference to the average consumer anymore and those that do put highest grade graphics available as a priority already play PC.

I'm no computer whiz so I'm not sure what all the terms are but more power for the game engine itself, like how Bungie was happy how Reach could have twice the number of AI in an encounter, stuff like that could be a boon for a new console.

But the jump would have to be huge enough to be worth it. Plus the final price tag must be below 400$. When games like BF3 start becoming the norm and not the exception it'd be time for a new wave of consoles. It would be impossible to get a PC that could play BF3 for under 200$ when you could find an Xbox 360 that could today.

I don't think it'll be a next console thing. Sure, it's a possibility, but a remote one in my opinion.

Bungie has never been known to release any details, or even talk about, current/future projects until it is time. If anyone was around on here back when we were waiting for Halo 2 to come out, you'll know what I mean. We waited from 2001, when Halo 1 was finished, until 2004. It was long, agaonizing, and painful... yet a blast at the same time as Bungie made it so suspenseful and awesome.

It's what they do. :)

Long live the Seventh Column.

What do you mean? They had to cut the graphics down and cut the framerate in half for the consoles when you play Battlefield 3 on them. I'd say thats pushing it to the limit.

im a huge bungie fan. im good with computers. my dream is to work at bungie, make liveing working there.

if the next Gen xbox is going to be due in between 2013 and 1015. and you guys think the game will come out on the next gen your really off...if it comes a year before the next gen like some of you say, it wouldnt make sense bungie is too good and too big to let their game on the spot light for a year before the next gen. logic says they would just wait.

Another biggy, once again that would leave Bungie Dark for a long LONG time. too long. bungie has already hinted many things for the next game, you just have to look right. its pretty much been confirmed, its going to be big, multi-platform(which makes sense too considering the 10 year contract with activision,-they make games on multipule platforms-). But as too anything about the game. Its unknown. believe what you want.

Bungie may be in the Dark but they hold the light. We must wait until they are finished forging the light that will bring us into their next Universe. Built for us to explore and enjoy. As for you haters and impatient, you may find your self launched into the sun by Bungie, and for you believers, wonderers, and dreamers. Just wait, it will be like nothing you ever imagined.

I haven't read a lot here, but I i'm going to have to agree with Prometheus on this one. I think we're still a good long while away from a new console. Not only have there been hardware updates, but I think one good thing to remember is that what ever it is tht Bingie is making, there making it for the PS3 as well. I mean really, the PS3 hasn't been out that long. So I think we wont see a new console for quite some time.

Pfft, the PS3 launch in November 2006. So roughly 6 years ago, that's long enough for me to invest in new consoles.

In terms of competitive advantage I think Xbox could run a new generation console alongside their existing 360/Kinect quite well within late this year or early next year.

Sony are hurting regarding profitability, especially PS division so I'd think xbox would want to capitalise on this and bang out their next gen console while their competitor hurting.

It will help them in the long run for the next generation and capturing xbox live subscribers too.

It just seems crazy to me developing a game now and not thinking about the new consoles with your game engine or next series of games.

Imagine all the artwork, 3D models, physics, AI etc all going into a current gen game engine and only releasing 1 game before having to step up to next generation.

It just seems crazy not to be developing both right now.

plus bungie has hired people for ps3, meaning they are multiplatform developing for current gen hardware.

That is true but it does not exclude developing for both current AND next gen.

But the jump would have to be huge enough to be worth it. Plus the final price tag must be below 400$. It would be impossible to get a PC that could play BF3 for under 200$ when you could find an Xbox 360 that could today.

Keep in mind that on PCs you can get 2560x1600 resolution screens, and play Battlefield 3 on that at greater-than-60 frames per second with the right (admittedly expensive) hardware. As someone else mentioned, to port BF3 to the 360, they have a smaller max resolution (1080p = 1920x1080) and also significantly less graphics performance overall at a still slower framerate. There would be a noticeable difference with new graphics hardware in the Xbox 360.

Someone else pointed this out, but also keep in mind that the 360 has a total combined RAM of 512 MB -- for both regular processor and graphics memory. My $400 laptop from a few months ago has 4 GB of RAM, not including graphics/video memory.

From memory I believe the 360 has resolution maximum of native 720p NOT 1080p. The xbox360 uses a form of upscaling to handle 1080p output but the game engine in fact only renders 720p.

So what if your laptop has 4GB?

You're running Bindows an xbox is running a custom optimized OS for it's hardware. If you're running a 64bit win7 you need atleast 2GB.

Also talking about Battlefield is pointless when comparing systems. The game doesn't give a -blam!- about your processing power or memory as long as you have a dual core. It only cares about your gfx card.

Why would they be hiring people to work on the PS3 version if it was for the "next gen" consoles?
It's scary for how good of a point that is.

Bungie has specifically been searching for developers experienced with PS3 development. Now, it's a possibility that they want these people so that they can have a bit of a head start on the hypothetical PS4, but I think it's safe to say that they're developing for the PS3, and that means probably continuing with the Xbox 360 for now.

Additionally, it's very rare for a multiplatformer to be a launch title for multiple systems, because they're not going to be released at the same time. Bungie would either have to make one version vastly inferior or wait a substantial amount of time to release it.

Finally, it's not unusual for Bungie to be close-lipped about their games before their release. Hell, we didn't know Reach was happening until 15 months before it's release, and we got our first real glimpse about it 9 months prior to drop date. We just didn't notice the lack of information quite as much because Reach happened so close to other things from Bungie, i.e. Mythic and ODST, and it was announced while those were still happening. Without being in charge of Halo, and no side project to talk about, Bungie's running out of things to say. For now.

I don't think so. In an interview with Gamasutra about their new game engine, one engineer said they're making the engine for the 360 and PS3, while also allowing it to be able to utilize next gen when that comes.

Exactly. Sequels may be on the 8th Gen but to think this next game is going to be on the next gen is silly, in my opinion.
