Subject: Can PM's result in forum bans?

There comes a time in every mans life... and that time is not now.

Say someone sent an abusive or inappropriate message to a forum ninja, could that result in a ban from the forums? How about if the same message was sent to an employee? I've always seen people say that PM's are not moderated on this site, but that's always been between two members, and never involved a moderator or employee.

I'm just curious, what is the line here?

And the Shadow fell upon the Land, and the World was riven stone from stone. The oceans fled, and the mountains were swallowed up, and the nations were scattered to the eight corners of the World. The moon was blood, and the sun was as ashes. The seas boiled, and the living envied the dead. All was shattered, and all but memory lost, and one memory above all others, of him who brought the Shadow and the Breaking of the World. And him they named Dragon.

Ready are you? What know you of ready? For eight hundred years have I trained Jedi. My own council will I keep on who is to be trained. A Jedi must have the deepest commitment, the most serious mind. This one a long time have I watched. All his life has he looked away... to the future, to the horizon. Never his mind on where he was. Hmm? What he was doing. Hmph. Adventure. Heh. Excitement. Heh. A Jedi craves not these things. You are reckless.” -Yoda

PEANUT-BUTTER SLAP!

Unless someone's trying to do something illegal, I'm pretty sure the general rule is that you moderate your PMs.

I know ninjas have extended bans for really bad appeals, but I don't know if they have ever banned anyone for a PM. I wouldn't be surprised if they did, and I don't think anybody would really object to somebody being banned for sending death threats.

Xbox Ambassador: Feel free to ask any questions you might have about a Xbox issue in a PM to me. I may be able to help!

Yes, if it's saying anything that is in someway "threatening" they could ban you.

  • 02.06.2012 4:19 PM PDT

Who the hell do you think I am?

Yes. I've seen people get banned, and then get their bans extended because they sent the moderator that banned them an inappropriate PM.

Old school Bungie, born and raised,
In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

I haven't heard any bans given for name- or simple harassment, but definitely for threats.

Now, in the quantum moment before the closure, when all become one. One moment left. One point of space and time.

I know who you are.

You are Destiny.

PMing a moderator something along the lines of, "I hate you, go burn in a fire," probably won't get you a ban. PMing someone something that blatantly defies the CoC / ToU, may.

Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.

We are entrusted to help enforce the membership agreement, terms of use and code of conduct. If we encounter a member who is violating those agreements or conditions, we're empowered to act/respond/report accordingly.

If someone wants to PM me an expletive laden message? Meh. Since I am the only one seeing it, it's up to me if it crosses my own line of acceptable, and I am pretty hard to offend/shock when it is just me. So my tolerance in PM is typically a LOT more easy going than what I will allow/accept on the public forums.

Here's a hint. I have not blocked PM's from anyone. Ever.

So (at least for me) if a PM from a member is going to result in me visiting the banlist editor for a longer ban? Someone REALLY made a bad appeal and I would imagine their public posting habits (which I would likely review and take into consideration as well) would warrant a ban extension or increase.

Other than that, (at least for me) I have my hands full enough with what people do on the public forums than to worry about PM's. Only exception that I can think of? Anything that would/could require law enforcement intervention.

What? Got something against Yetis?

I remember Achronos making threats about banning people when 'Burn Bright' was still going on. People who didn't have the app were just giving out their WLID to people who claimed they had the app.

I imagine that a ban from the forum should depend on forum activity alone, considering messages are private. When it gets to the stage where the authorities should be contacted though, i can see where a ban can be necessary.

Say someone sent a message to an employee (Achronos for example) that was offensive, but didn't reach the point where it was in any way law breaking, what would happen then? Would the reaction be similar to the one above, or would the consequences be greater when dealing with the person at the top?

Their site, their rules. I don't have any pity for someone who would intentionally poke a dog with a stick and then whine about getting bit.

I'm not inclined to speculate, since I suspect that if I do, someone will feel obligated to create an alt with no post history and "push the envelope" and see what sort of PM's it would take to get a reaction.

Seriously, if someone just read that and is thinking about it.... please, try to find another way to waste your time.

I acknowledge my user name is stupid. However, I promise I'm not.

Disclaimer: The latter is a lie.

There you have it, folks. It is impossible to banned due to a message you sent to another user.

Thanks for clarifying the situation, Fish Man.

Using the employees is a bad example.

Achronos could ban you for wearing blue jeans on a Tuesday, if he fancied. There are no rules when it comes to him. Moderators could face consequences for their actions. Using them as an example'd be better.

Citizens of Me! The cruelty of the old Pharaoh is a thing of the past. Let a whole new wave of cruelty wash over this lazy land.

Hear the word of Pharaoh. Build unto me a statue of ridiculous proportion. One billion cubits in height......that I might be remembered for all eternity!

And be quick about it!

I asked a moderator once, he said yes, you can be banned for PMs.

Don't remember which mod it was.

I find this quite unfair because no forum rule was violated. The only exception that I can see is if the PM is reasonably severe. I remember reading somewhere that Achronos stated that you guys could do nothing about PMs. Although I may have read it wrong, this was a few months back.

Doing something malicious via PM? All the more reason to prevent said person from gathering more attention to him/herself by publishing it on the public forums. Also, if it's really necessary, Achronos can always Ultraban.

Which is exactly what was already stated.

Tbh, I don't think Achronos really cares if you get banned for sending a ridiculous PM to a mod. Not exactly top of the priority list.
