Subject: What sets a map apart for you?

What aspects of a map make it above average in your opinion? Think about your favorite maps in all of halo. Why were they your favorite?

Some common things might be:
Aesthetics
Lines of Sight
Balance
Uniqueness
Certain Vehicles/Weapons

Anyone who claims the AR takes skill ought to shoot himself in the head. Preferably with the AR because they'll most likely miss with any other weapon.

Balance and uniqueness.

Falcons

Also large airspace so the Falcons can properly fly through the map.

Basically what you said. LoS, balance, correct power weapons for the map (no like lolsword and lolshotgun on countdown), certain unique aesthetics that are only on that map. Spawn points is another one. Reach favors red team on all maps but like 1 for its' spawns.

I don't know. Halo 2 generally had the best maps in my opinion, because they just flowed right. There was a hectic, yet controlled and balanced aspect to the maps and matches.

It's hard to put into words, especially considering that I haven't really played Halo 2 since they shut down the servers. But I definitely know that Halo map quality went downhill after Halo 2.

So the map doesn't matter so long as it's competitive?

Yes indeed. Flow was one thing I found lacking in most of the maps in reach.

I still am at a loss with SB.. I can't find a viable reason that the spawn was moved up a floor. It wasn't a terrible map in the beta.

Even if the spawns were switched, it'd still play poorly.

Quite true, but it would be 1000X better.

Vehicles. Everything else can suck it

Indeed. I find it hard to make maps using reach's mechanics. Too many variables to worry about.

Please don't hype for games...
They'll just fall short of your expectations and you'll complain for months.

For me, the map needs something different. Something no other map has. An element on the map that enhances gameplay yet mixes it up as well.

Balanced vehicles though?

  • 02.06.2012 6:04 PM PDT

Balance

I like maps that are vehicle heavy, yet can still be longe sight lines and close quarters too.

For example, a city-type map with wide roads and open skies for vehicles, then tight corridors in the buildings for close quarters and also good sight lines like open windows or balconies in upper levels of the buildings

Yes, that and Spire are my two favorite maps.

Opinions are like butholes. Everyone's got one, nobody wants to hear about it.

Vehicles, design, and uniqueness.

MLG maps barely do, mainly because of all the grey.

Nothing we can do. Just wait it out.
Needs Gmod or Warcraft 3 World Editor.
