You realize something like that is just as much a spam post as anything else and would be moderated accordingly, right? Soooo, why don't we get rid of polls because sometimes people make biased ones with all the same options. The logic is the same.

So it would just be a feature to allow more spam? I'm sure it could have its main points, but it's pretty inevitable for it to turn out like youtube and facebook where you see tons of posts that are just nonsense from people wanting attention and "likes". Therefore creating more spam which I wouldn't like to see, it would be like youtube with no videos and just the comments.
On Youtube and Facebook there are 0 repercussions for doing stuff like "LIKE AND I'LL _____" or "LIKE FOR A COMPLIMENT" etc... etc...

Here, there would be.

Therefore your argument is invalid due to the fact that the two (well, three, I suppose) environments are all moderated differently and you have no way of measuring how people will respond to something like this on a forum where Moderation is present and constantly enforced using only the examples of YouTube and Facebook.

It isn't our shiznit anymore.

I like your post, but I just can't find a way to express that. Maybe I'll just quote you and leave.

No real need for it. Part of the allure of the Bungie forum for me was how simple it was. No bells and whistles.

Nope, doesn't destroy discussion value in a thread at all or derail it. Especially when an employee posts in a thread.

Case and point: don't worry about it. Girls start getting boobies pretty soon, and then you'll have plenty of other things to think about. Being an Inheritor is not a life goal.

Actually Youtube probably has a better way of moderating those stupid thumbs me up comments because they let the people get rid of it automatically by labeling it as spam. That type of system wouldn't work on bungie.net because we don't have comments, we actually have discussions and having a system to automatically remove posts due to other users clicking spam would be catastrophic to discussion.

My point is that Bungie.net would never be able to handle the system because of the inevitability of the users who would be seeking to just get "likes" and not add to the discussion. It's already hard enough to hold a conversation on this forum, and you want to make it even harder by adding this?

You have no way of knowing how much soda will fly out onto your leather interior if you shake a can three times, it could be none or it could end up being a disaster and costing you to get your interior redone or have to live with the nasty stickiness of cola on your pants bottom. The thing is that you know it will most likely end horribly so you don't do it

I hate sites that have "like" buttons.
Bungie.net has like buttons on various project pages and on Halo Reach fileshare items. You must really hate it here.

Posted by: MetalxTongue
Because Bungie doesn't want it.
They've actually been silent on it.

I want a "dislike" or a "hate" button.
That's what I use the report button for.
Don't abuse the report function just because you don't like a post. It's only there for reporting violations of the forum rules.

"This isn't Facebook"
Answered your own question OP
Waypoint isn't Facebook, yet it has a "Thanks" button which essentially performs the same functionality as a like button on Facebook.

It would tarnish the beautiful simplicity of the bnet.
It's interesting that you'd say that when Facebook has arguably one of the simplest UIs on the Web, which probably attributes to its popularity.

Posted by: AcedannyK 7
People would exploit the system horrendously too.
In what way? By boosting up the "like count"? That's like saying people abuse poll options - an utterly pointless waste of their time which doesn't even happen.

This is an online forum, not a social network. There is no need for a like bar.
Bungie.net is a social network of/for gamers. It is not a social network in the sense that it is not a general social network like MySpace or Facebook is.

You can't see the problem with people commenting, replying, and making threads merely for 'likes' rather than actual discussion?
No, because it doesn't seem to happen on other sites (Waypoint, for example). And even if it does, the Webmaster can unleash his ninjas.

I think that it would lower discussion if people just clicked a simple like button.
I think it would encourage further on-topic discussion by both alleviating repeat posts and focusing on the "good" posts made by people which may be buried pages-upon-pages deep. Quality > Quantity.

Reporting something as spam on YouTube works exactly the same as reporting something as spam on BNet. And when a comment is reported, it keeps all of its likes despite being minimized by default to everybody viewing the comments.

The thing you just describes works exactly like BNet.

Wanna have another go?

I'd just like to say that, even though I currently would rather go without it, the true pro's and con's of this feature will shine if we just give it a trial at least. I see no harm in testing it out so that we can get a better idea of how Bungie.net would be with such a system.

  • 02.07.2012 8:34 PM PDT

Please no like button.

  • 02.07.2012 8:44 PM PDT

If we had a 'like' button we might just see a decrease in repeat posts.

I dont mind to be honest. On the one hand its too easy to simply click 'like' or 'dislike' or whatever alternatives there are. In some ways it kind of trivialises a decent post, if people are discouraged to add why they like or dislike the comment it can create more questions than answers.
On the other hand, some comments answer a question so simply and effectively that a feature that highlights these comments could be quite useful.

No, no it does not work in the same way. When you report something on Bungie.net it goes through a system where a moderator has to view it to be the final judge, would you mind explaining how this is similar to Youtube's way of getting rid of spam which is pretty much, "if the community decides it is spam then the community must be right" and it gets rid of the comment.
Yes it keeps all of its likes, but it's dropped from the top comments (if it was there) and begins to fade away into the pages if it wasn't already deleted.

I'd just like to say that Bungie.net does have a system to automatically hide the post from view after it receives a certain variable amount of reports. I don't even think moderators even have the ability to turn a post into a drop down.

But users can only receive further moderation manually.

Be that as it may, the punitive repercussions of spamming on BNet are greater than doing the same on YouTube.

While Titles and Prefixes aren't big deals, people risk losing them if they do things like that. And, if it's excessive, blatant, and disruptive enough, they can be prevented from participating in the Forums for a certain amount of time (AKA a ban). YouTube does not have anything like this. People can spam all they want and not have any inhibitions because they know nothing will happen to them or their ability to post comments and use YouTube.

You have no way of knowing how people are going to respond when they either know from the get-go or know via public examples that spamming for or spamming the use of the "like" feature could, quite probably, earn them a timeout from posting.

And don't use your soda analogy again because it isn't relative to the situation and I don't care to explain why.
