Subject: Bungie.net Rewards System - Why not?

@spawn031

"So much of what we do is ephemeral and quickly forgotten, even by ourselves, so it's gratifying to have something you have done linger in people's memories." John Williams

First off, this idea has spun up numerous times in the community forum. It's most recent appearnce was from dazzerobo and SonicJohn in this thread. Yes, a point system for Bungie - pretty neat eh? Please bear with me as I try to transfer my thoughts to yours, bypassing both of our brains.
I had an epiphany!

So many of you may have heard of the Xbox Live Rewards point system and not to mention the Bungie.me points system. These points are great an all but what is the point in earning them, to get something in return!?!

Of course, so my idea was to simply have....wait, I'll let Joseph Staten say it better.

What if Bungie points.....

...could be used in forums?

:/

Of course! What if there was a "rewards" system on Bungie.net? Some cool gears and unlocks that users could redeem points and get special benefits on!

It would basically work like this - do positive things on Bungie.net and in the forums, get rewarded. Do negative or unwanted activity on Bungie.net and lose points. This would be very similar if not almost completely like the Bungie.me system of rewarding points. Although there could be ways to constanly earn points on a daily basis.

Ex: In addition to the current point system on Bungie.me which is mostly based on similar criteria below:

>Get 50 responses in a thread you create
>Get 100 responses in a thread you create
>Get 250 responses in a thread you create
>Get 500 responses in a thread you create

(These would occur on your Bnet Birthday)
>Be a member of Bungie.net for 1 year
>Be a member of Bungie.net for 2 years
>Be a member of Bungie.net for 3 years
>Be a member of Bungie.net for 4 years
>Be a member of Bungie.net for 5 years
>Be a member of Bungie.net for 6 years
>Be a member of Bungie.net for 7 years

>Achieve Heroic Status
>Achieve Legendary Status
>Achieve Mythic Status

>Create a private group
>Attain 20 members in a private group
>Attain 50 members in a private group
>Attain 100 members in a private group

You can ALSO, earn points by other ways on a daily basis, such as:

>Signing into Bungie.net = 1 point (max of 1 pt/day)
>Linking your Xbox Live Gamertag = 7 points (max of 1 time)
>Creating a thread = 3 points (max of 21 pts/day)
>For every 7 posts on the mains and in private groups earn 1 point. Max of 7 points/day.
>Have a user save your thread = 2 pts/save
>Get a topic on "pinned topics" = 30 points
>Another user quotes you on the mains = 1 point (max of 7 pts/day)
>Participate in "reporting" an unwanted post/collapsing a post = 1 point (max of 7/day)(reports must be valid - users that "spam" reports for points will be deducted points and possibly banned - Bungie can tell)
These ideas are just examples, there can definitely be more that we "the community" think of.

On the flip side, you can also LOSE points

Yep, that's right. You can also lose points for doing negative behavior on Bungie.net. The banning system would work somewhat like this:

If you're warned for a post by a forum moderator/employee: Lose 75 points and you cannot gain points for the remainder of that day. You can still redeem points for that day.

If you're banned, lose 100 - 250 points (depending on previous ban history and length of ban), you cannot gain points or redeem points for the duration of your ban. A "perma-ban" causes your points to reset to 0. However, getting banned doesn't cause you to lose previous redeem purchases on your account.

In other words, Do not pass go, do not collect 200 dollars!
So what are the prizes?

This is where the community comes in. We need prizes and incentives for people to post positivly and contribute on the forums. Having privledges and special unlocks for users to work towards is giving users a reason to keep and stay active while contributing discussion on the forums.

Of the top of my head, here are a few ideas:

>Unlock ability to select which prefix you wear: 200 points - Reference to Duardo's thread.
>Ability to see signatures under users posts: 100 points
>Ability to use embedded pictures in private group news posts: 250 points
>Send up to 10 PM's simultaneously : 200 points
>Unlock X minigame on Bungie Forums: 150 pts/game
>Unlock number of views on each thread: 150 pts
>Permalink to user's posts: 30 points
>Unlock "friends list" for Bungie.net: 250 points
>Custom Avatar: 700 points (must be a member for at least 3 years to unlock)
>View stats on users profile page: PPD, Account Age (in days): 150 points
>Ability to submit events to the Bungie Community Calendar: 150 points
>Additional posting options (bb code): 50 points
>Redeem 10 Bungie Render Minutes: 150 points - not sure if this would be possible
...you get the idea. We can think of more, these were just ideas from brainstorming.
In Conclusion:
The idea is rewarding users based on a point system. Users that post regularly and contribute to the forums, will unlock privileges through a rewards system on Bungie.net. I think it would be a great way to add future updates and unlocks from the administration side. At any time, the webteam could add more unlocks for users to work towards.

I forgot to mention, that users couldn't start gaining points until their account has been active for 14 days after their join date. Somewhat like the "can't create a group" rule that already exists. That way accounts that are made and rarely used won't notice a trend unless they're regular forum goers.

I also forgot to mention it should be made an "opt in/opt out" system. Like other rewards programs. It's disabled ("opted out") by default for all users. If users want to unlock cool swag for their profile, it's by their choice and would select to "opt in".

FEEDBACK!
This is where you come in. Do you like this system? What other features could be added? Would you like this system or not care for it to be integrated? How would this impact users to make positive contributing posts?

Thank you.

I think this is a great idea. The value of points for each action might have to be tweaked a bit, but I don't really see any other issues.

EDIT: Some of the rewards seem more like things that we should have anyway too.

Have you seen my mind anywhere? I seem to have lost it...

0x0 x0x 0x0 000 000 x0x 000
x0x 0x0 0x0 0xx 000 0x0 000
x0x x0x x00 0xx 0x0 x0x 0x0

I have seen you future

I like the idea, but I would put less emphasis on thread creation. This encourages spamming. Maybe 1 thread per day for points?

Also, I would suggest getting a couple points for every day you don't get banned. And a post counter. That would be a cool feature to have.

Yes, everything should be in ratio. The points that are in the OP, were just general ideas to get the thought flowing. Obviously there should be smaller unlocks to get users interested, but still have bigger rewards that might take a few years to work towards, like a custom avatar.

I liked your spin on this idea; I've always loved the idea itself, so yes.

I like it, but it needs a lot of refinement.

No rewards for attention whores whoring themselves out by fishing for quotes and spamming threads for points, already bad enough with some people, they don't need an incentive.

More rewards for community participation.

Intresting but i already think they are planning to do this with their new game, whether it be Destiny or not.

Some ideas for ways to earn Bungie Points:

> Participate in a Ride Along
> Win a Ride Along
> Win [forum contest run by Mods/Webteam]
> Have an avatar/profile-theme accepted
> Create a thread that X amount of members have saved
> Create a thread that has become a Top Forum Topic
> Monthly activity cashouts (like a wage) for logging in activity, post-count (I'm iffy on this one) and good behaviour (no bans or warnings), and perhaps group participation too
> Create a group that has X amount of members joined
> Buy items from the store

Some ideas for things to spend points on:

Personal Flair
> Unlockable avatars (pre-set)
> Unlockable profile themes (pre-set)
> Unlockable title bar colours (pre-set)
> Unlockable prefixes (pre-set - not just current ones)
- Current ones (including "None")
- List of new ones; probably good to get some brainstorming on this
> Unlockable titles (pre-set - not just current ones)
- Current ones (including just "Member")
- Floodian
- Septagonian
- Universer
- Groupie
- lol i duno

Group Flair
> Unlockable themes (pre-set)
> Unlockable layouts
> Unlockable facilities
- Group Calender
- Whatever else group people want (I don't know; I don't spend much time in them)

Forum Features
> Ignore User (one-time spend per user; no refunds, but can be deactivated)
> Custom Dropdown (favourite links; groups, threads, etc)
> Disable all Member Flair
- Alternatively a filter to "Classic" (Normal-Mythic)
- Alternatively a filter to just the titles; no bar colours
> Pinned topics always to side (instead of at top)

And whatever else we could probably ask for. But this is a good start. Just food for thought :)

I love the idea, but I wouldn't wanna see the posting points abused for the sake of gaining points, that's where I see a fault but the mods could prevent that with bans, but then banning could become rampant.

Good idea, but like every good idea, it has its faults. Anyway, I approve.

I acknowledge my user name is stupid. However, I promise I'm not.

Disclaimer: The latter is a lie.

I don't like the idea. I like the fact that every user is equal in terms of what is open to them on the website, as long as they remain within the rules, of course with the exception of the mods.

Honestly, this sounds like a great idea. I think refining should be done so people are not inclined to cheat, but other than that you deserve a gold star.

The distance between insanity and genius is measured only by success.

The problem with the world is that the intelligent people are full of doubts, while the stupid ones are full of confidence.

As you waste your breath complaining about life, Someone out there is breathing their last. Appreciate what you have.

If you stand for nothing, you will fall for anything.

It could be interesting but it would begin to turn discussions into games. Everyone would just be trying to get points rather then actually adding input.

I understand some people do this with the titles now but having it the way you suggested puts it on a whole other level.

Indeed. I can understand where you're coming from, Spawn, but this would no doubt be greatly exploited. Besides, we already have www.Bungie.me (not trying to advertise or anything) for accomplishing achievements and what not.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

I like the idea of rewards for positive behavior as long as they don't promote spamming or any way to "boost" them too much.

  • 02.07.2012 5:07 PM PDT

Stupidity, when sufficiently advanced, is indistinguishable from magic

I may be old fashioned, but I don't even like the titles. Users should post here - or not - for one reason: because they want to discuss something. Anything else is extraneous.

Yes, but this system rewards positive behavior. It gives reason to invest into a single account which is the goal. Many people have multiple accounts and don't care to keep one as their main. Other websites use this system and it's a good indicator of positive behavior.

if people want to unlock all the "cool new stuff" just post regularly and be a positive contributor :)

  • 02.07.2012 5:48 PM PDT

What's the difference between this and the titlebar system that is already implemented? That you can customize how the site looks to you? Don't they have userscripts that do the exact same thing?

Sorry if I sound a little harsh, but I'm not seeing the point of this...

Im guessing a reward people who come back daily which is a good thing. I also see this as a good way to promote bungie.

Think of it this way, the more you participate in the forums daily, you get cool new swag that goes customary to your profile. Using points to buy render minutes, custom forum avatars etc would promote positive behavior.

People that would want these features would watch what they post rather than pressing submit on everything the see. Just like Xbox or Bing rewards, the more you contribute the more you get back as a reward for being an awesome member.
