13.72 billion years in the making.

On December 1st, 2012, I met Neil deGrasse Tyson. I shook the man's hand, and even made him laugh. Not much else to do with my life now.

Me gusta.

Holy crap . . .good idea. You've taken what could be a pretty complicated "economy" and made it straight forward and palaltable. Well done. I like it!

It isn't our shiznit anymore.

While I like the idea of rewarding people based on forum behavior, I absolutely detest requiring people to jump through hoops to be able to access basic website functions. If I was a newcomer to this website and saw that I had to go through all of this:
>Get 50 responses in a thread you create
>Get 100 responses in a thread you create
>Get 250 responses in a thread you create
>Get 500 responses in a thread you create

(These would occur on your Bnet Birthday)
>Be a member of Bungie.net for 1 year
>Be a member of Bungie.net for 2 years
>Be a member of Bungie.net for 3 years
>Be a member of Bungie.net for 4 years
>Be a member of Bungie.net for 5 years
>Be a member of Bungie.net for 6 years
>Be a member of Bungie.net for 7 years

>Achieve Heroic Status
>Achieve Legendary Status
>Achieve Mythic Status

>Create a private group
>Attain 20 members in a private group
>Attain 50 members in a private group
>Attain 100 members in a private group

to get to this:
>Unlock ability to select which prefix you wear: 200 points - Reference to Duardo's thread.
>Ability to see signatures under users posts: 100 points
>Ability to use embedded pictures in private group news posts: 250 points
>Send up to 10 PM's simultaneously : 200 points
>Unlock number of views on each thread: 150 pts
>Permalink to user's posts: 30 points
>Unlock "friends list" for Bungie.net: 250 points
>Custom Avatar: 700 points (must be a member for at least 3 years to unlock)
>View stats on users profile page: PPD, Account Age (in days): 150 points
>Ability to submit events to the Bungie Community Calendar: 150 points
>Additional posting options (bb code): 50 points

I would give this reaction, press the big red "X" on the top right of my browser, and never bother with Bnet again.

Almost everything in that rewards section should be a basic privilege of Bnet. However I wouldn't mind being able to redeem render minutes.

We should know better, because we are better.

A good idea, but some of the rewards seem like basic things that we should have anyway. Why should we have to use 250 points just to get access to a "friends list"?

Agreed. If the rewards provided more incentive I like this idea.

It's that way by design.

The "points" that are in the OP aren't exact measurements of the scale for this. The scale is just a rough draft just to get the concept going. What some people consider "normal" function on an internet forum, might not be normal on bungie.net. If the friends list feature was 150 points or even 10 points, would that change your outlook on the function? Probably not.

The point is no matter what the price is, some people will really contribute to they can unlock that feature if they really want it.

Think of it this way, the more you participate in the forums daily, you get cool new swag that goes customary to your profile. Using points to buy render minutes, custom forum avatars etc would promote positive behavior.

People that would want these features would watch what they post rather than pressing submit on everything the see. Just like Xbox or Bing rewards, the more you contribute the more you get back as a reward for being an awesome member.

Ahh I see. I'd say go for it, but make necessary adjustments first.

Love the idea :D

Some points or limits for rewards and payouts might need tweaking before and after it comes into place (assuming).

I especially like the message 10 people function although reckon it should cost more like 50 points.

The ninjas could also set challenges (in game as well?) that people could do for points.

On top of that a commendation system could be put in place that rewards points for post count, number of groups your in, daily activity etc.

I like the idea, but I would put less emphasis on thread creation.
This.

As the current system is based on how active one posts, this new system could be based on posting quality. I've seen some pretty good threads that are quite long but well presented.

The point of the forum is not to get people posting or staying, but to foster a community, it is not a game.

Although if the new game has an mmo function, i would like to see economy based around it.
With forum activity being a factor.

Also i kind of believe some users will be new, and they are people we would like to keep, they will not ruin the environment but make it better, this could scare them away from the forums.

Like you said the idea has been kicked around before and I'm still in favor of it. The key to this though would be that there would have to be a lot of achievements that take time to earn rather than ones that can be earned quickly, E.G. make a hot topic etc.

Off topic: Is it weird that I kept seeing Hogwarts professors screaming about taking points from different users in my head while reading?

Maybe only make the rewards system available after a certain amount of time? For example, you could start earning "points" after you were a member for a year?

That's supposed to be the a reward in an of itself, a birthday reward no less, you're going to reward someone for getting a reward which is an award for something else you're already giving another reward for?
>Create a private group
>Attain 20 members in a private group
>Attain 50 members in a private group
>Attain 100 members in a private group
I'm glad to see ideas about how to increase "JOIN MY GROUP!!!" spam messages.
>Signing into Bungie.net = 1 point (max of 1 pt/day)Why?
Even in CoD you don't get EXP for just booting up the game.
>Linking your Xbox Live Gamertag = 7 points (max of 1 time)Meh.
>Creating a thread = 3 points (max of 21 pts/day)Because that'll end well.
>For every 7 posts on the mains and in private groups earn 1 point. Max of 7 points/day.Because that'll end well AND Bamp, bamp, bamp, bamp.
>Have a user save your thread = 2 pts/saveYas.
>Get a topic on "pinned topics" = 30 pointsYeah, because getting your topic pinned is so easy.
>Another user quotes you on the mains = 1 point (max of 7 pts/day)"This thread is Awesome!!! Quote if you agree!!!"
>Participate in "reporting" an unwanted post/collapsing a post = 1 point (max of 7/day)(reports must be valid - users that "spam" reports for points will be deducted points and possibly banned - Bungie can tell)No, Bungie can't tell.

>Unlock ability to select which prefix you wear: 200 points - Reference to Duardo's thread.Should be an ability anyway.
>Ability to see signatures under users posts: 100 pointsShould be an ability anyway.>Ability to use embedded pictures in private group news posts: 250 pointsSHOULD BE AN ABILITY ANYWAY.
>Send up to 10 PM's simultaneously : 200 points
Halfway between "Should be an ability anyway" and "Meh".>Unlock X minigame on Bungie Forums: 150 pts/gameBungie.net doesn't have any minigames ... and if they did they shouldn't be unlockables.>Unlock number of views on each thread: 150 ptsAs in seeing them?
In between "Meh" and "Yas".>Permalink to user's posts: 30 pointsWhat's that/if it's what I'm thinking it should be a ability from the get go.>Custom Avatar: 700 points (must be a member for at least 3 years to unlock)Bungie.net's Avatar system currently sucks too much to implement that.>View stats on users profile page: PPD, Account Age (in days): 150 pointsMeh and should be an ability anyway.>Ability to submit events to the Bungie Community Calendar: 150 points
>Additional posting options (bb code): 50 points
Meh and Meh.
>Redeem 10 Bungie Render Minutes: 150 points - not sure if this would be possibleUncertain.

To be honest guys instead of thinking of new systems to pack on top of the old one, why not think of ways to simply improve the current system?

Make it so different trust ratings grant you new abilities.

You have the trust rating of someone who's been here five years, is an Exalted Mythic and posted on average once a day?
Get a custom avatar!

Or something like that, you get the idea.

Yes, the idea would to create simple ways to earn points on a daily basis. You could earn multiples of these points per day, but there is a maximum/day so people can't "boost" them.

Say you make an awesome thread that is very beneficial to a forum. 20 people save your thread, that's 40 points for you. If that is enough saves to get it "sticked" that's another 30 points. Chances are it would also be a hot topic if it's a great thread as well, so you would also gain additional points depending on number of replies.

This isn't a one time and done thing though. Not like Xbox Achievements where you meet the criteria and you can't ever earn it again. It's meant to be a system where users earn points daily. Some of the prizes are worth many points because of this. Users aren't suppose to unlock all the features within one month. It should be a process of years to obtain everything. Thanks fort the feedback!

I do see the Harry Potter reference as well, 10 points for Gryffindor! ;)

There are numerous ways to do this, but the concept is the same. I think that's what you're getting at.

The numbers and examples of "achievements" that are used in the OP are just rough ideas. I literally was brainstorming them as I was typing this thread. Just to get some food for thought. Obviously it would be bad for users to abuse the system, so the mechanics need to be adjusted so the ratio is easy to manage and doesn't take people a decade to unlock one item.

Actually I think what I was saying without realizing it is that I don't like the idea.

Bungie.net doesn't need to be gameified, gameification should only really be necessary on things that aren't interesting to begin with, only as a supplement to things that are.

You don't want users doing something just because they'll get points for it, you want users doing what they want to do then supplying rewards for things that are fun but some people just haven't got around to doing them.

Good example, the vidmaster, you know which one I'm talking about.
Assuming no one lagged out during that match it was almost always fun to do, it was a nice challenge for a nice little reward, if someone just said "You wanna do this on legendary with four people?", the reaction would either be a resounding NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO or simply a "Why?".

It should be on something that's fun to do but it's simply unlikely for the average person to attempt because they see no point in it, there's no reward.

A good Bungie.net example of this is the Webcam games, I bet activity for them was much higher than it would have been without a title, and I'm betting even everyone who didn't get a title had fun during them.

A more recent example is the most recent mailbag, Deej says there's a special reward for whoever guesses the faces, everyone swarms in there and tries figuring it out and even though only one person won I'm sure most of the people who participated had fun trying to figure it out.

The idea is these awards should be more a passive rather than a active reward for the experience of coming to Bungie.net, you shouldn't get a reward simply for posting, you should get a reward for making a great posts, doing the unexpected, etc.

The only things I can think NEED an active gameification system like you're suggesting is things the masses find boring but will have a positive influence on their lives.
Improving their diets (like the 5ADay campaign), exercising, learning, etc.

I also forgot to mention it should be made an "opt in/opt out" system. Like other rewards programs. It's disabled ("opted out") by default for all users. If users want to unlock cool swag for their profile, it's by their choice and would select to "opt in".
