At the current time, yes they were. The Covenant were on the verge of collapse (if they hadn't collapsed already). The Elites were the only thing standing in the way of Human dominance. So, ONI decides to weaken the Elites.

I don't understand why people are having a hard time understanding this.

Wouldnt it be a better idea for them to ally? i mean supper strong lizard people as your allies would pretty much discourage anyone from messing with you? And dosnt Thel genuinely want to ally, or at least make peace with humanity?

While that would be the intelligent thing to do, Humanity does have a pretty big streak of being a bunch of dumbasses. It's Human nature.

About me: I am a vicious wolf of a man.

But really am sweet at heart. =)

Because Karen Traviss is a -blam!- writer and decided to create drama where it wasn't needed.

Essentially, for some reason the Vice Admiral wants a civil war in the Elite race to weaken them so humanity can finish them off.

Despite the fact that the UNSC has less than 5 ships in it's EDF, and the population of Earth has decreased to millions. And the fact that for all she knew the Spartans were either dead or trapped in Onyx.

AND the fact that the Arbiter and his men personally fought along side the greatest hero in human history: Spartan 117.

Don't look too deeply into the story of Glasslands.

In memory of those fallen in the defense of Earth and her colonies.

March 3, 2553

They did kind of kill 80% of the human race.......

Look at the U.S. and Japan. They attacked Peral harbor, killed thousands of people, and destroyed al ot of ships. once we defeated them, they became our allies.

It's not quit the same as 27 years of nonstop genocide and the deaths of trillions/billions.
Throw in the fact that both the Elites and Humanity are incredibly unforgiving zealous beast's, I don't think 3 months of allying with each other simply because of an small fragile common enemy will make each other "allies" for at least a few generations (Which could very well be another 100 years) at the very least. Not 3-4 years after the war.
Not to mention all the deep rooted political, philosophical, and sociatial psychological effects that this war had on all sides.

They were waging a genocidal campaign against us for 30 years, and only joined us almost completely out of necessity. Not bashing you specifically, but the people who (still) fully expected it all to go back to sunshine and roses with Elites and humans working together and trusting each other fully after butchering each other for so long might as well go back to watching My Little Pony for all the realism involved in such a story.

We are not trying to finish them of, we are trying to weaken them politically, and by consequence, militarily so they won't be a threat. Instigating a black ops assasination of a diplomat is far different then finishing them off.

@Dave: I agree whole heartedly. I was more surprised at how people refuse to understand the sides then I was reading any fiction by Greg Bear.

We should know better, because we are better.

My main gripe is who's side they are supporting. Between Thel and 'Telcam, 'Telcam is the more likely of the two to double-cross ONI and attack humanity if he gains power. Why don't they supply Thel with the weapons? Thel gets weapons, he consolidates his position, he uses his weapons to put down 'Telcam's faction, Thel is now the leader of Sangheilios, he is powerful, and he wants to be allies with humanity. Humanity now has the might of Sangheilios in case we ever need to call for aid.

If 'Telcam gets the weapons, on the other hand, he kills Thel, Sangheilios crumbles or 'Telcam takes Thel's place. We now have our only Sangheilli ally dead and no one to support us if something like the Flood returns and tries to finish us off.

The second option ensures that humanity has total dominance but leaves us unsupported in case some "Ancient Evil" ever decides to kill us. The first option has the UNSC and Sangheilios as the two most prominent powers and both has an ally in the other in case of a threat.

I do understand their viewpoints, im not saying they have to walking arm in arm kind of allis, but at least have some sort of system worked out where they dont go onto another genocidal war. I mean its not going to be so great for either of them if it happens.

"Don't turn your back on me, Halsey! I made you, I brought you back from the dead!"

....oh wait. Wrong universe. Whoops.

But yeah, ONI generally wants humanity to be the top dogs in this galaxy. This way, they can be a step ahead of the Elites, and remain on top.

And what if those lizards would grow stronger and would like to enslave you humanity ?
And havent you forgot that the elites and brutes were the main comanders in the war ?
Obviously any human would want to enter a terrible huge thingy down an elites ass.

Because in Halo, Humanity stopped evolving as a society around the 21st century for some reason, and so we are just as vindictive, warmongering and arrogant as we were in the 21st century as we are in the 26th century. The genocide of an entire species is preferable to trying to understand them.
