Like everyone stated its impossible but think of it like this, the blue flames, were they ever on the disc to unlock? If so then how come i cant play with them offline? I never really downloaded it and never will be able to.
Changing the games physics like in the TU, your saying because of this new armor wouldnt be able to be made? Updates would be the solution to that problem. Patches and all would help out alot.

Thoughts?

Even if they could add new armor, they would've done it by now.

This has been said in every single thread about this. The reason why new armor can't be made is because of the system Halo uses for loading its character models. Every single permutation of armor is already hard-coded into each map, and in order to load more one would have to essentially re-download every single map in the game.

Really doesnt answer the question but anyways possibly saving them for Halo 4 and i doubt they would make them even if they could, not after the game has been out for awhile now

The update would be so big that most people wouldn't be able to download it, it would take way to much time to download and isn't worth it.

Not many people have that much hard drive space.

  • 02.09.2012 9:17 PM PDT

Not to mention that would be a FORCED update if one wishes to continue to play online. Again, because of the (rather archaic if you ask me) way Halo loads its maps/character data it's impossible for someone to play with someone else that would have an armor permutation that the other person hasn't downloaded.

Your presence here is quite unneeded. Begone you!!!

Blue flames was on the disc but only exclusive to Bungie at the time. The rumored armor could possibly be on the disc but is definately exclusive to 343.

Yes, because EVERYONE has the HDD and connection for a 9+ GB download...

That doesn't even make sense. The blue flames are on the disk, but only enabled through a network check. You can use them offline if you hack it, that's the only way.

The TU did not change game physics, it added more megalo hooks, giving it some extra things to manipulate. Megalo is the scripting engine that replaced the old enumeration system. The gametype tells the engine what to do, which is how chess can say 'change the value for team 1 from red to black, and the value from team 2 from blue to white'. It's not adding anything, it's manipulating what is already there.

The reason armor can't be added, is because it needs to be present in every .map file, as well as the mainmenu.map to select it. You can't re-download maps you didn't download in the first place. They could have added it with CEA if they wanted, but it only would have been selectable from the CEA disk menu, and only on the new maps.

The engine right now can't handle loading tags from an external source, if it could it would be much simpler to add content like that.

I don't understand how its possible to add the new skins in Gears 3 though. I guess its just not the same as Reach.

It's not, the games run on two completely different engines.

It could be set up different, but I remember from a modding friend who got it early that he was enabling a bunch of skins that later turned out that you had to purchase to enable on retail. So they might already be there, or they might have a system set up to read skins from a dlc package.

Still, it just means that its possible in future Halos maybe, just not Reach.

It's actually possible assuming that hreach follows h2v map system and implements a shared multiplayer map. One contains the data, the shared stores the armor/other shared items. It would make the most sense in space and organization wise, and updating would be 100x easier. You'd just need a new update for the shared map, which would be relatively small.

I haven't looked at how hreach is organized however, so I could be entirely wrong and it might not be shared. Which wouldn't make any sense not to use it though D:

Ah, and I guess people have already modded reach, so they would know if anything was there.

I didn't know every dev used the same engine, or the same data saving system, etc etc.

Absolutely, if they change the engine so that it can read tags from an external source, such as dlc. Right now, it loads all info from the .map you are running, and a shared resource file on the disk.

  • 02.09.2012 10:08 PM PDT

There are no exteral/resource files IIRC, everything is stored into a .map.

This is what I was looking for. I was assuming it was in reach. This would just require the shared multiplayer map to be updated, and it's maybe 200-300 mb?

It isn't getting that info from the resource file, but even if it were, it can't read it from an external location like dlc, you would have to download the full game to update that one 400mb file.

And it wouldn't be compatible with anyone running a non-updated version of the game, either showing you with default armor, or failing to even load because of a security mismatch (which it does for different versions of the same map, so possibly for different resources).

@boomdeyadah
Not external, but there's a shared resource file, appropriately named 'shared.map'. It doesn't have what people are wanting it to, though.

Well maybe it won't be like that in H4. I just think people need to give up on new armor in Reach. Maybe they'll make something already there available for purchase with credits(blue flames maybe), but thats about all they can do I guess.

blue flames are already in the game, but are locked. the new armor does not exists until it has been downloaded form an outside source.

I wasn't aware anyone had mapped shared.map, either in h2v or reach. We don't know fully what it contains besides a little shared scenario data, which could include armor.
