Subject: What Game Had The Best Story ?

Halo 2

You learn way more about The Covenant from their perspective as The Arbiter, and you lead a revolution.

And with the Gravemind it proved that the Flood weren't just mindless monsters.

None of the games have particularly great stories, but I think the best was Halo 2's, with ODST merely having the best storytelling.

Wha ?!?
Maybe i dont understand but....
Are you talking about story-telling or the plot ?
Because the whole halo universe story is just wonderful !

Sure, the universe is great. The plots of the games are merely decent; good by FPS standards, but compared to RPGs like Mass Effect or Final Fantasy VII they're not much cop.

YOU WANT?!

I heard FF VII was incredible, but unfortunately, FF13 was my first FF game.

Kinda put me off the series a little... I think it should have been left to a movie for all the cutscenes it had. And I don't know if it's a JRPG thing, but it gave me the impression of a soap opera.

XIII is definitely a fantasy soap-opera of sorts, but I loved it to bits. I'm one of those odd sorts who doesn't mind cutscenes no matter how many hours they span, so that might be why.

Alas, XIII-2 from what I've played so far focuses more on gameplay and the story and gameplay suffers.

VII is an ideal blend of both gameplay and story, and objectively speaking is probably the best Final Fantasy. You shouldn't let XIII put you off the series because the two games were directed and written by completely different people and made by quite different teams.

Speaking subjectively however, XIII beats them all for me and I've played a fair few of them.

"So much of what we do is ephemeral and quickly forgotten, even by ourselves, so it's gratifying to have something you have done linger in people's memories." John Williams

Very difficult question to answer.

I enjoy the nostalgia of playing through Halo CE and Halo 2. However ODST has proven itself to be a very awesome campaign. Granted there are more options to take in the later games like customizing skulls and bonus multipliers, but I take it you're just talking about the gameplay itself.

i always found myself replaying the level "The Arbiter" in Halo 2, mainly because that's the first time you step into the covenant shoes. I can't recall what musical theme is it during Halo CE in the level "Two Betrayals", but it's right before you rush into an encounter where the covenant and the flood are facing off against each other. It's in 6/8.

That music always gets me pumping. Nothing beats Halo 2 split-screen campaign though. Loved it, especially on legendary.

There are three people I serve. God, Chuck norris, and Evilcam.

Halo 3 was the bomb.

Helping out the 7th column community with reasonable posts since '07.

I think Halo 3 did. It had the best pacing, as well as useful information and a wide perspective on what was going on.

Reach showcased more of what characters were doing, then who they were, or what they did before a point of time.

ODST had no structure at all so I can't say it.

To infinity, and beyond!
UNSC Leviathan

Since Halo Ce, 2, and 3 were along the same storyline, I would have to chose all three of them.

up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down,up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up an...sorry.

I dont think I have a favorite from a single game, so I'd say Halo CE,2,3.

Up and down and all around!

Cookie for reference.

(To discuss Halo 4.)

Easily Halo 2.

Why? Because unlike every other Halo game besides CE and Wars, the story of the game and the awesomeness was present from the first combat mission, Return to Sender cutscene.

In Halo 3, the first half was completely irrelevant to the second, only after the Flood arrived, was the plot actually having some relevance to the ending.

Halo 3 ODST, only until we learned of Vergil and the data, was the plot actually having any relevance to the end result and canon as a whole.

Halo Reach, the game only lifted up by the Tip of the Spear, the story at the Lnos, and the end result by the Package.

Halo 2, CE, Wars. Each part of the campaign had a major effect on it afterwards.

Which is why I rate those games as the highest, especially Halo 2, it told the story of the Covenant in the best way possible, through the eyes of an Elite.

If the question is which series of games has the best story, the choice is simple. Marathon.

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.
/slow clap for respect

The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

Probably Halo CE.

The twist of the Flood entering the picture was just something that still impresses me to this day. It was perfectly executed. The Flood was scary too (if you played it 10 years ago, of course), which made it even better in the overall experience.

Halo 2 > Halo 3 > Halo 3 ODST > Halo Reach > Halo CE

Based on campaigns.

Halo 2

Especially the last 4 missions. I was sucked into the story, the whole way through, it was a masterpiece

Id say my secnd favourite story was Halo 3. It was a good story but the first 6 missions were useless, no storyline or story telling going in there

Thrn Halo 3 ODST, i liked the way it was told, but i just didnt loke the actualy storyline

Then Halo CE-I hate the game to bits, but i think the idea for the story was good and coukd have been done so much better

Halo Reach was absoloute pish when it came to story. No storyline untile the last mission, the others are just randomly killing covenant, shutting stuff down and pressing switches, then BOOM the planet is glassed. Pish

I agree, ODST was a phenomenal story, it is a pity it did not get better reviews.

  • 02.11.2012 6:18 PM PDT

they all had the best story, thats right, they all did. :-)

None of the Halo games really have a GREAT story but if I had to chose the best one it'd be Halo 3 for me.

My favourite was ODST, because it had a Film Noir feel to it. As well the fact that you play an ODST character which gave the game a more human feel to it, as opposed to the genetically altered walking tanks that are Spartans.

  • 02.12.2012 9:45 AM PDT

If you're passionate about the thing you're talking about, I'll always lend an ear.

Halo 2. By a mile.

ODST was an expansion, it lacked story but made up for it in it's storytelling apporach. As mentioned by a previous poster.

Halo 3 had ambition and Halo 1 set the scene but Halo 2 truly brought the series to a galactic scale of conflict. Through the use of different narratives and crucial events.

Sure ODST had the atmosphere, great jazzy nights in a rainy lone odst-esque city. But Halo 2 really had scope, if I was to doubt anything it would be it's cliffhanger. But then again it's cliffhanger however painful, made the hype for Halo 3 even more grueling. :)

So no, ODST does not have the best story.
