Subject: Biblical references in Halo: Fate of the Master Chief

Dont be angry, I'm obligated to whip your ass; if I didn't you wouldn't be getting your moneys worth.

The references are numerous:
A- Story of Noah
A great "flood" consumes the world
An "ARK" is built to preserve and protect life
God makes a "covenant" with Noah to never destroy the human race again

Master Chiefs name Spartan: John 117 or the book of John chapter 1 verse 17 (John 1:17)

John 1:17 "for the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came throuh Jesus Christ"
>Moses made a covenant with God and gave the 10 commandments to the world.
>Breaking these commandments lead to Gods wrath, which He compensates for by sending His son Jesus. If Jesus died to save the eternal lives of all peoples, who wants to bet the Master Chief, keeper of laws and defender of the people, dies in Halo 3.
> This claim could be supported by the fact that he is refered to as a Spartan.
> Spartan soldiers fought and died without question in defense of their native country Sparta. They fought with intense honor under a regime that used nationalism to promote the good of the country over the good of the individual.
I know this all sounds a little ridiculous, but I bet MC dies saving the world from destruction
"grace and truth came through Jesus Christ" meaning JC was a profit of truth and grace. (profit of truth sound familiar anyone?)
> In H2 we meet the heretics who go against the prophecies of the profits of truth and regret and initiate a rebellion. The profits of truth and regret represent the struggle. The profit of truth knows the truth of the great journey and that it will save his people. He will go to whatever lengths necesary to see it fulfilled. The profit of regret also knows the truth but regrets going through with it b/c he sees that the covenant race will also be destroyed and that they are fighting for nothing. This explains the rebellion of the heretics, they do not know the truth but simply beleive that the great journey is a false prophecy. They are correct in this assumption.

My bad, I didnt know they werent allowed. There is no such thing as a coincidence it was done purposfully, and in doing so served as an interesting backdrop for telling a story. The same thing was done with the Matrix and that turned out alright.

One Question: i've been observing this forum for quite sometime and there has been many threads like this one.

What is it that attracts you people to the idea that halo is based of the bible?!?!?

dude, i have believed since the beginning that the Chief would die. What i believe is that seeing as the Covenant hate the Master Chief, he will offer to sacrifice himself as a form of peace between the humans and Covenant. That would be the only thing that would be able to tie in with the Bible

The same reason that you came on to this post. We thought it would be interesting to see what this person thought. Besides, there is absolutely nothing wrong with talking how Halo coincides with the Bible. We have the right, the freedom of speech, as it was set by our forefathers.

The reason it attracts us is because some Christians, like me, believe that a lot of stories have been based from the Bible. So, we are just trying to see if Halo has been one of them. So far, all the signs say that Halo is one of those stories that have been influenced by the Bible. That is why

if we look at the definiton of archetype, it is defined as "an origional model or type after which other similar things are modeled"
Their are elements of the Halo saga that lead me to believe that it has been modeled and shaped from an origional model. We must be careful how the word origional is used here. Since there are appearantly many parables prevalent in many cutures around the world that have existed for thousands of years it would be difficult to say which one was the first. For this case I see original as meaning that the parables such as the biblical parable, epic of gilgamesh, and others as being more original than the one in question in Halo simply because they have been around much longer, and as I will also defend that they have laid as you said the archetypical framework around which Halo is based. My reasoning for thinking the bible served as the primary influencing factor is that, while the people of bungie are no doubt very intelligent and probably well educated about other parts of the world, I think it seems more plausable that they will be more familiar with the biblical story due to its prevelance in American culture. If this is so, which it may or may not be, then their is modest reason for seeing elements of the biblical parable of Noah as influencing the story of Halo. If other cultures also have stories about a flood, do they also contain covenants between parties, and contain context specific terms such as "ark" or words that could be closely related to ark- if so what are they? I have also, as you said, considered that the arbiter could possibly die. Actually now that I think about it, the arbiter will die. In the cutscene when the arbiter gets his armor I believe the profit says something about how elites who become arbiters serve as arbiters until they are released from duty through death. I still dont think it rules out the possibility of a MC death. Martyr's will not deny their principles or beliefs. The actions the MC takes in the game are governed by the fact that he is a soldier following orders. They refer to them as spartans because historically the Spartans were a race of people who were extremely strong, talented, and bread for war from the day of their birth. They follow partriotic sentiments and will not back down and away from them for fear of being thought a coward. They fight for honor, supremacy, and for their country. I cannot say MC fights for honor but I believe he fights for the people, he has after all, taken it upon himself to save Earth. I know you may not agree with the religious parallels im just pointing out obvious similarities. On this last point it is clear that MC has taken it upon himself to save Earth, mankind therein, and seems determined to take whatever means necessary to "finish the fight" as he says even it means sacrificing himself for the cause. Let me know what you think, this is good dialogue.

it doesnt seem religious to me. hes simply quoting a book. there are a lot of things in halo that allude to the bible, whether they were meant to or not.

Of course they were meant to. Bungie did all this on purpose.
