If there is anything that should change about Bungie.net in this new launch and generation of 2012, we should create an environment that caters to the older community. While bringing in new comers is a big part, I feel that "Halo" has given many players the mindset that bungie.net "home of Halo" is the immature community that rages about anything - can i haz reconz!!

My point is that since Bungie is starting a clean slate, can we expect to keep a clean slate for ourselves? Conducting ourselves in the appropriate manner in forums to keep that higher standard for Bungie? I would love it for members to actually interact on a more professional basis and have that transfer throughout all the forums. It would just be much easier to communicate.

I understand that "Bungie.net" can't be made "rated M". But we can uphold ourselves here to a higher standard. Almost like a hidden rule. If we want the community to be less immature, we have to start somewhere. I'm talking about all you community members and veterans and forum moderators that have been here or a while.

Let's should these new guys the new community and give Bungie a clean slate of members to work with in the next project!

Bungie.net, Rated M for Mature.

I agree, a more mature community is never a bad thing. But don't expect much. It's the internet, after all.

I don't think he meant literally make the website (M). Just a general "We should keep all the immaturity in the past and bring on a new year of intelligent discussion". Which isn't a bad idea but actually taking that from theory to practice is almost impossible.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

So if someone says "I'm 12 what is this", they can be perma banned?

So, Death or Bungie?

I don't see how that bothers you, just report that person and move on. Don't take it too seriously.

I keep thinking about this on the SWTOR forums.

Yes, grand job, but the OP was asking why.

Thank you.

Yes I understand that Bungie.net itself holds itself to a standard, but what I'm asking is it we can significantly raise that bar? I would much rather see a forum of members that interact more maturely and professionally that a bunch of people mindlessly yelling at each other without even knowing forum etiquette.

As a community, it we uphold ourselves in the forums, when new people register they will establish and set a bar for themselves to match or they will feel embarrassed when they post. Lets raise the bar together!

Legally, there's no way to force maturity.

Heck, there's no way to force maturity at all. The quote I gave shows that Bungie are at least aware of the age-range they intend to cater to, but whilst that doesn't force a maturity level, it does show the extent they're bound to maintaining it.

As for the Community itself maintaining maturity...if that's what this thread is asking, I feel like that's a pretty moot point for making a thread. I think everyone will only be as mature as they intend to be, and those who do want a higher brow of discussion will lead through example, but dude, you can't tell the internet to grow up. So with that in mind, what exactly are we to discuss here?

No need to be rude, bro, just thought I'd add to the discussion.

What you're not seeing is how "Bungie.net" is a community known itself on the web as a whole.

Sure we can have individual posters that are known in the community, but AS A WHOLE, we're represented on the internet of what type of style that we post in. For instance, there are multiple local restaurants in town. There is an upper class one that most people spend time at, a few medium based restaurants and the low end. Wouldn't you want to be known as the high end standard?

I sure would. I would like to be that restaurant that is known for their high standards. Just because Bungie games are rated M doesn't mean we should all turn in to 12 year old kids on the forums. I think that with the new project for Bungie, we should consider raising the reputation of Bungie and becoming that high end restaurant.

Probably because of the "-blam!-" filter.

It's not really going to stop younger people from joining the forums here, even if it were rated mature.

But the reason "we can't have nice things" here is because of the common reference that people would abuse it. If the maturity level and bar was raised for the common standards, maybe it would be possible to have a custom avatar and embed pictures to forum posts. We're living in the 19th century when it comes to forum posting on Bungie.net.

It doesn't make sense. We should make the mature minority the majority.

While you can stop minors from buying a M-rated game (to a certain extent), there is no way you can stop them from accessing an internet site.

  • 02.11.2012 7:58 PM PDT

Well, unfortunately, this is the way Bungie wants it. SJ's quote is basically just them going "yo, join, but if you're under 13, don't, because even though we try to keep it moderately kid-friendly, there's still gonna be some grey area and we'd rather not catch flak for it."

They have their own reasons for doing what they do, and, unfortunately, they're not easily convinced. Perhaps DeeJ or urk or maybe hdubya or something will enlighten us, but I think it's pretty much just to keep it clean.

Not talking about actual age restriction in this thread at all. Read some of my other posts. Also I renamed the title, it's more fitting.

If they provided the correct date of birth for their hotmail account you could filter out underage users.

How do you propose maturing the community? Because I can't quite figure out a way of having an entirely mature concise community.

Yeah, true.

If they did happen to make this a "M" rated website, I wouldn't even be able to be here, legitimately. I'm only 14, but I'm mature for my age.

How do you propose maturing the community? Because I can't quite figure out a way of having an entirely mature concise community.

It starts with the community. Starts with every forum post you make, you put thought behind it. Maybe each response it's considered "normal" to type out a couple paragraphs. Eliminating posts and reporting things such as "TLDR" and "Adapt" or "UMAD BRO?"

As soon as others see that people are reporting those posts, many will lead to actually starting to make useful posts. Don't even post in a thread unless you're actually contributing something to the discussion. I can't even name how many times I've looked at a thread and over half the posts are just a direct quote from another post with nothing added to it. What is the point of that?

It all starts with the community. We need to change the way that we approach forums, and it we set that higher standard, hopefully others will follow suit. When Bungie released their next game and visits the forums, this etiquette will transfer to new members and they will uphold themselves to the same standard.
