Subject: Bnet Community, can we just grow the hell up?

Some people are immature. They can not simply choose to be more mature in their actions. It is just the kind of person that they are. It is a pity, but it is the truth. Their maturity will come with time, and although by 13 some people are mature, not all are. It is just something that we have to live with.

There are three people I serve. God, Chuck norris, and Evilcam.

I agree with you OP... strongly.

It starts with the community. Starts with every forum post you make, you put thought behind it. Maybe each response it's considered "normal" to type out a couple paragraphs. Eliminating posts and reporting things such as "TLDR" and "Adapt" or "UMAD BRO?".......

You've got to remember that this is the internet. The place where anonymity is everywhere. The place where you can literally be banned from somewhere and still evade the bans over and over again. Telling people "We need to smarten up" who aren't listening isn't going to help.

The major flaw of the Internet is that it's too accessible. Anyone of any age can hop on a computer and post away. Thankfully, this site requires registration, so we aren't completely bombarded with complete......silly people.

Also, bungie.net has no real detrimental effect on my or anyone's life really doesn't help the "be mature" ethic. If I was to post naughty pictures I'd get banned. I could still attend my school and work at my job, the fact that it has no repercussions on reality just really makes the silly....well, act silly. Speaking of silly, ever heard the phrase "When in Rome?". I think this very much applies to the internet. "Everyone else is immature, why not I?". When the perk of anonymity is applied, even the most mild-mannered person can completely change, from Tom the businessman to Tom the Troll!

I think you are seriously overlooking the amount of serious and mature posters we have here. The deeds of the minor punish the many. It would be similar to saying all the forums are dead because the gallery forum is dead. There are shining examples of users on this site.

It's not that we need more maturity, we just need to appreciate it when it appears.

What you could do is only choose to interact with the members you think are more "mature", and ignore the rest. Trying to "fix them" won't help.

So if someone says "I'm 12 what is this", they can be perma banned?

Think about it, ken.
Im unsure hes capable of that.

This is a perfect example of needed maturity: Ken went to one extreme.

"We live in a special time; the only time where we can observationally verify that we live in a very special time" - Lawrence Krauss.

I was a finalist :P

It's chimerical to measure maturity on these forums, and it's also illogical to think that age always correlates to maturity. Limiting Bungie.net to a specific age group won't stop the problem you see here, nor would it stop any form of immaturity across the massive data-hub we call the internet. It's not solely Bungie.net which complain and rant; it's every forum site in existence.

How are we meant to hold ourselves to a constant standard? Do we limit the amount of Caps Locks used per line in a post? Do we stop users from typing abbreviation like "Lol" and "u", and give them harsh punishments if they do? Seems quite cynical; especially considering how these immature activities effect a mature user are subjective.

No, what should happen are positive incentives to entice rational behaviour on the site, something more so than titles; and even then it's not guaranteed to reduce the problem noticeably.

Only after we ban Bricypoo.

It is nice to think about, but it will never happen.

We are not going to make it.

Trying something once will increace your chances of success, because you tried it. Try someting twice, and your chances increase yet again - seeing as you've done it. Try something a few thousand times, and your chances of success is exponentially increased; this increase would likely provide success every time

It's gun b k SJ - I still <3 u.

*Ahem*

As many have pointed out, you can't exactly force maturity onto people. You can however, entice them to be mature. That's why I love the Bungie Points idea that's floated around for a few years now.

You imply a level of control over Halo: Reach matchmaking that we no longer have. Or, in your vernacular, it isn't our shiznit anymore.

Active 9/1/11, Heroic 12/25/12

I don't believe we can improve the maturity of the site by punishing the new users more, the solution is to be better role models. I see Legendary and Mythic members post stuff that is borderline of breaking the rules on spam threads in The Flood. If new users see those naive posts they will believe that is the correct way to act.

Just because my hat says I haven't been in a long time makes me no better member than you. People need to stop using the title bars as a tool to judge someone on their "trust".

Old school Bungie, born and raised,
In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

I used to rant and rave about this some years ago. I wanted to see an environment that catered to a more behaved person. It's not just the young kids, by the way. It's also the old ones who are too eager to slip a knife between someone's ribs at the first hint of immaturity.

Alas, I learned to live with it, and to just stick to the forums, or more appropriately the threads, that fit what I was looking for, and to lead by example more than speech.

While you can stop minors from buying a M-rated game (to a certain extent), there is no way you can stop them from accessing an internet site.

If they provided the correct date of birth for their hotmail account you could filter out underage users.

How do you propose maturing the community? Because I can't quite figure out a way of having an entirely mature concise community.

It starts with the community. Starts with every forum post you make, you put thought behind it. Maybe each response it's considered "normal" to type out a couple paragraphs. Eliminating posts and reporting things such as "TLDR" and "Adapt" or "UMAD BRO?"

As soon as others see that people are reporting those posts, many will lead to actually starting to make useful posts. Don't even post in a thread unless you're actually contributing something to the discussion. I can't even name how many times I've looked at a thread and over half the posts are just a direct quote from another post with nothing added to it. What is the point of that?

It all starts with the community. We need to change the way that we approach forums, and it we set that higher standard, hopefully others will follow suit. When Bungie released their next game and visits the forums, this etiquette will transfer to new members and they will uphold themselves to the same standard.

Too right, I agree with everyword. Its really not hard to 'report' stupid posts and that, although it feels like no else reports it I bet they do. I always report posts that I think are off topic or stupid.

I wish the forums were as you described but it'll be very hard as its the internet afterall. Community Operation: Report - Report every post/thread that you think is against the rules. /jk

Will not happen anytime soon. A more mature community would never come around these parts, sadly.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

I have the PERFECT picture for this thread relating to age and maturity.

Probably because of the "-blam!-" filter.

It's not really going to stop younger people from joining the forums here, even if it were rated mature.

But the reason "we can't have nice things" here is because of the common reference that people would abuse it. If the maturity level and bar was raised for the common standards, maybe it would be possible to have a custom avatar and embed pictures to forum posts. We're living in the 19th century when it comes to forum posting on Bungie.net.

It doesn't make sense. We should make the mature minority the majority.

Yeah, true.

If they did happen to make this a "M" rated website, I wouldn't even be able to be here, legitimately. I'm only 14, but I'm mature for my age.

If I had a nickel...

I'd have about 35 cents.

I think this is a good idea, however, it isn't fair to make people be mature. In this forum I will understand, if you went to The Flood...being immature can be funny sometimes and it's how I personally relax.
