Following the same logic, we should remove post bodies, because people use them to degrade others.

I acknowledge my user name is stupid. However, I promise I'm not.

Disclaimer: The latter is a lie.

Nope, they really shouldn't. It is nice looking at when you joined, and I really don't think there is much elitism here.

To everyone who says it's never a problem: Have you ever been in an opinion thread where the OP states his opinion, then get's 6/10'd, followed by the quoting of his month-old join-date? I know I have, just in the past few days.

Perhaps I should restate my question, as it was in the lower part of my OP: Should users be able to hide their join-date?

Subject: In the next update, Bungie should allow users to hide their join-date.

Stupidity, when sufficiently advanced, is indistinguishable from magic

If you feel bad about having a later join date then that's your problem. People will always try to claim superiority, a problem this won't solve.

Remember Elk

People don't go around looking at your join date to tell if you are new around the forums or not.

Tru7h. C4RN4GE. Bungie.

This isn't a solution to your 'problem'. The choice to hide would only be used by people like you in your case, and those that are proud of their join date would still display it.

How often have you been put down because of your join date?
Any time you have, it says more about those who bring it up than it does of you UNLESS you are posting completely irrelevantly and off topic.

Even when I was new here I never had anyone berate me because of my join date, ever.

The only possible time I have seen any join date related elitism is from a few entitled Mythics, because they feel more important because they joined 'back in the day'. I have been Mythic 7 times, but I'm an '08 'kid' and my title keeps vacillating not by any doing of my own. I can just about guarantee you, I am well older in actual age than the majority of them. And quite honestly, I don't give a damn what they think for their pride gets in the way of their actually posting anything that could possibly be of any use or interest to the masses.

Moral being: Ignore anybody who gives you crap over a join date or title. Neither really mean anything other than your own investment.

Before we had member titles on Bungie.net, the forums looked like this. Your join date was actually shown below your avatar. People identified you for these unknown reasons and complimented on your join date.

"Anyone who joined after 2007 is -blam!-!". Basically, these threads were fairly common. Since the title system has been added, the "new" form of elitism has been member titles. This is also where the meme "'04 or bust" was coined from.

Honestly, this is the first thread I have seen in the past 6 months regarding the removal of users join dates. 1 thread in such a long time, many people don't see it as that big of a deal. The community creates a false sense of elitism within themselves. Elitism is actually non existent, we just have nothing else to talk about so we turn to each other.

This post has to do with member titles. But is very relevant to this matter.

Also, I totally want to Duffin's Law this thread.
That was the first thing I considered doing too. I had already done it in another topic earlier, and decided that that was enough. Today is a new day...Though I still won't.

While there's always some latent elitism, it doesn't seem to be a big deal. I think some people are taking the whole notion of titles too seriously. As has been stressed, ad infinitum, its just a "hat". Titles don't matter. Anyone who thinks that titles do matter, well simply doesn't get it. You should be reticent to want to interact with them to any large degree anyway.

Its kind of funny to me though, that most of the "elitism" you encounter is actually just satire. Be it ascending or descending "elitism". The only real elitism I see here usually comes from arbitrary game "ranks", or certain users who only interact with other users who use some dress up script. The game rank elitism is dealt with as it happens, and the coup people aren't really doing anything worth noting or stopping, or worrying about.

It doesn't matter what users join dates are, but people seem to make a bigger deal rather than it is. We're just beating a dead horse. There isn't a problem, we're just making it ourselves. In short, there is no reason to remove join dates.

PS: It's funny to make this thread on an account that is only a few weeks old. Nice job.

My Screenshots / My Group / Remember to follow the rules or you will get trapped in a box.

I don't really see anyone saying anything about join dates that often if ever. There is really no need for this. The web team should focus on more major problems such as a sentbox, a cancel group join option, a notification feature, more detailed post history and post count. Stuff that would make the site even better than it is.

Experience shines through regardless of your account age. Hiding it would do nothing but make you act like one of the Halo 2 voice maskers.

I see you've changed it to have an option to hide your join date...

Then all people who have their join date hidden are alts and newfriends.

Despite you editing the original post to something more credible, I still disagree with you.

I've lost my old account as well, and yes people don't take you as seriously, but that's just how it is. It's not that big of an issue really. It doesn't matter if they know when you joined or not, if they don't recognize you they aren't going to just suddenly respect you because you think they should.

I feel like it only adds to controversy and elitism.
I see no controversy

I don't either

and I'm surprised you think the second point is adequate at all for this.
Same, I don't think it has anything to do with join date. There is always going to be this idea of "elitism" on this site unfortunately, just try to steer clear of any of that garbage.

It is nice to see how long people have been around. I never see any elitism involved with it, unless people are joking.

I've seen so many posts where people say "Look at how long he's been around for", and use that as a basis for there argument.
Usually people don't say that unless whoever they're talking about said something stupid. Solution: don't say stupid things.

If you're having problems with older members showing elitism, or they're just straight-out insulting you (TO YOUR FACE!), report them. Besides, older members should honestly know by now that titles are just suits.

  • 02.13.2012 6:56 AM PDT

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

Really? I've never been attacked or condescendilated for my join date. Doesn't seem like a very prominent issue.
