Subject: What programs were used to make Pathways, Marathon, ONI, Myth or Halo?

i am starting a Games developing company and we have a large budget and will have a building soon, but we do not know what programs to use, we are very basic programers but we want to get started as soon as possible because we know it will take a very long time, we were planing on a First Person Shooter but have concepts, story board and ideas for 3rd Person Shooters, Roll Playing Games and other genres, we will start developing on the PC and MAC simultaineusly and will start using XNA and XBOX 360 in a few years if all goes well, i need to know what programs were used for any or all of their games for 3d graphical models, programming, and anything else i may need

I'm sorry if I don't take you that seriously, but you are saying that you and a group of friends that have taken the time and effort (and money) to get a "building" and procure a large budget, don't even know what programs are used to develop games? Don't you think that is a bit silly? I'm really not trying to rain on your parade, but you won't get far if you are all just really beginners to programming. You will also need a group of highly skilled artists to develop your in game environments and assets. If you are serious about doing this I would recommend sticking with what you know best and not try to do everything yourself. If you program, then program, and if you can get a 3d artist, let them do the art. I'm just not quite sure if you realize just how hard it is to develop a video game, but I would still gladly follow up on this post with a list of essential and optional programs you may want to consider using. By the way, how old are you and your "staff?" Just curious.

Don't be so mean on the kid. For all you know, he already has a thing going nad he's just wondering how Bungie does theirs. BTW, they use 3ds Max to design maps or any concept. The program they use for the final product is what I do not know. I heard them say it on their E3 panel.

Wow really? I offered to write a follow up post with a list of programs. If you think that explaining the reality of making games to a kid is "being mean" then there is something wrong. It just seems that he is extremely naive, and I am explaining to him that the process is a lot harder than what he apparently thinks. What do you mean by, "for all you know?" He said that he and the other people he is working with are beginning programmers. Try to keep up on whats going on man and have a pleasant day.

"I'm afraid of the man I'll become if I lay my life down for the people I don't even care for"

Don't they use their own? Everything they do is internal no?

No not necessarily. What you are thinking about is what game engine they use, and in that aspect you are right. They use their own proprietary engine but they use plenty of middleware and other programs throughout the course of development.
