Subject: what programs were used to make Pathways, Marathon, ONI, Myth or Halo?

i am starting a Games developing company and we have a large budget and will have a building soon, but we do not know what programs to use, we are very basic programers but we want to get started as soon as possible because we know it will take a very long time, we were planing on a First Person Shooter but have concepts, story board and ideas for 3rd Person Shooters, Roll Playing Games and other genres, we will start developing on the PC and MAC simultaineusly and will start using XNA and XBOX 360 in a few years if all goes well, i need to know what programs were used for any or all of their games for 3d graphical models, programming, and anything else i may need

I'm sorry, but if you don't even know what programming languages were/are used...You're not ready to make games.


I doubt you're even an adult yet. :P

But I'd wager Halo and ONI were done in C+/C++, it's standard. I'm not that knowledgeable in older languages though. As far as engines, they use Havoc for physics, and an in-house engine used just for Halo.

Wow. Man if i knew. I think they make their own engine. Best to find an engine and learn to use it and start making games from it. I think. Although bet DeeJ or one of the employees will comment and give an answer soon.

Bungie usually makes their own engines. Jason Jones made a game engine for pathways into darkness, Myth had it's own engine, and Halo had it's own engine. I know some games have been made using Bungie engines like Stubbs the Zombie and a few FPS games in the 90's.

I don't think there was 1 engine they used and I believe they have made all their engines.

I believe they used this for modelling.

Programming was probably done in some form of C++, although I don't know for sure.

Halo:Comat Edition anniversary runs on Havok engine, it was not designed by Bungie, anyway, i have more than enough money and believe that most if not all the Bungie games were made mainly in either C++ or C#, i just need to know the main programs

Nearly every game uses Havok for its Physics engine. Havok itself is worked into the overall game engine.

Halo Anniversary uses all the same things as the original Halo, except with a new graphics engine running over the top. I believe all the Halo games use the Havoc physics engine though.

I respect your ambition. As with most programming languages, punctuation is key. Have an understanding of the english language would be my first step.

I too am also interested in creating my own game development studio. Having been studing computer programming for well over a decade now, I can consider my self an expert on the subject.

A tip from me to you, start with an Android game. You will need to know Java. Download Oracle's Eclipse IDE. Install the Android SDK and other tools. From there the world is your oyster.

As for how Bungie created those games, I do not know. But I would expect some C/C++ perhaps some Obj-C.

Halo itself has its own "Halo" engine. Even Reach was running code from Halo: CE. Every iteration it was updated/retrofitted.

ok, i am quite familiar with Visual Basic but i personally have never used havok but we currently have 6 voluntary employees, 2 programers, 2 graphics designers and 2 concept artists, we have 8 computers and a LOT of processing power, several graphics cards, 2 gaming computers for testing and cables running everywhere, i just need to know exactly what i may need, not just for creating and testing, but for compiling, and creating setup applications for discs

Maya is used for modeling and animation.

This would be my guess. Although bear in mind that a lot of Bungie's early games were originally for Mac...so I dunno. I'm not sure if XCode was around then.

Most Xbox games are C++, I think...but in this day and age it's almost always better just to use a modified form of an existing engine to make things easier on yourself, even if you have to pay somebody for it. For example, when I write PC games I use OpenGL in conjunction with C++.

It's stupid to make your life shorter and more frustrating by doing work that other people have already done equally well or better, especially when those people are more than willing to sell you a copy of their work relatively cheaply and with good terms. As other people have said, there are several really good engines already out there; you shouldn't start from scratch if you don't gotta.

i have 2 macs and the developers could share one of them so the MAC platform isn't really a problem, i don't want to have to break the news that we have to create an engine so if i could use one that would be preferred but how much would it cost to use Havok or OpenGL

Halo Anniversary uses all the same things as the original Halo, except with a new graphics engine running over the top. I believe all the Halo games use the Havoc physics engine though.
Anniversary uses a heavily modified Havok to emulate the original Halo's physics. (I heard)

That being said, I believe Bungie started using Havok with Halo 2.

Havok I'd have to lookup and OpenGL isn't a game engine, but a graphics pipeline. You may want to google "Unreal 3D engine". I think they want 25% after 10k.
