Subject: what programs were used to make Pathways, Marathon, ONI, Myth or Halo?

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

i have 2 macs and the developers could share one of them so the MAC platform isn't really a problem, i don't want to have to break the news that we have to create an engine so if i could use one that would be preferred but how much would it cost to use Havok or OpenGL
Havok I'd have to lookup and OpenGL isn't a game engine, but a graphics pipeline. You may want to google "Unreal 3D engine". I think they want 25% after 10k.

wow, you may save more by making your own engine.

OpenGL, free. Not really a console thing, though.

Havok? Well, let's search for two seconds. As of 2005, it was REALLY expensive; it may be slightly cheaper now because they're trying to support smaller studios, but I still wouldn't expect to pay less than like $40,000 for a license. Either that or a set percentage of your commercial income.

If he can make it work and it is good, he could sell it and make money that way too.

Free, cross-platform engines do exist.

When I grow up, I want to be just like goofenhour.

My guess is the whole game was written in Objective C. My guess is there wasn't a lot of programs to make PiD. It may have been all accomplished through coding, and photoshop.

Edit: I'm talking about PiD.

They photoshopped each specific movement by each creature you see in the game.

Here is how Bungie made Pathways

Now, in the quantum moment before the closure, when all become one. One moment left. One point of space and time.

I know who you are.

You are Destiny.

A program that I'm sure most of Bungie employees use (and I as well - hell, even Achronos uses the following on occasion), is Microsoft Visual Studio 2010.

It's free, as there are express editions! It consists of Visual Basic, C#, and C++. I don't know why everyone is recommending a game engine; I don't see how you can get far with that.

Download it here; it's one of the best on the market!

Yeah, I knew that, it's called sprite based animations I believe.

Anyway, it looks like Jones created an editor for the structures. So yeah, just Objective C and photoshop.

I acknowledge my user name is stupid. However, I promise I'm not.

Disclaimer: The latter is a lie.

How did you get a large budget to develop a game while not knowing anything about programming?

I am thinking Rich Parents or a small fortune from saving up a lot of money.

But the user is supposedly getting a building for the staff beginning to create this game. I am very doubtful over this.

I find it hard to believe that somebody suddenly has a budget available to them to begin programming and creating games, with no knowledge whatsoever with programming. And even comes to bungie.net to try and find out where to start.

I hope I'm wrong because this sounds cool. However, the entire story to this sounds fishy.

This.

Even if you're not into game programming specifically, visual studio is pretty much the best thing for anything. VS 2008 is provided for free by Microsoft for anybody who wants it.

If you want to quickly start doing simple games, try visual c++ combined with openGL or other graphics library. MS also has a product called XNA, which is specifically designed for games, but I haven't heard much feedback on it.

Yeah, I don't think so.

Actually what i would recommend is maybe making small arcade games, like on armor games, etc. and build engine based on that. Platform would be okay. And first build on that simple idea. Do not go for epic halo type or racing car gameplay. Smaller arcade is where to start.

when you have enough money and maybe after building a new engine as a side project then start a more advanced game. not only that first make a basic model of a game before buying the property , it will be alot cheaper if you have an idea or plan laid out before starting.
