What has me really excited about Halo 3? The darker setting.
In my honest opinion, Halo CE got it right. When you encountered Marines they were in dire straits and never eager for a fight. The dialogue was spot on "we got wounded here," "everyone stay cool, shout if you see anything," "its a mess, sir," etc. Playing the game, I felt that the covanent were unstoppable, that humanity was on the verge of distruction, and the introduction of the flood startled me enough to make me turn the XBox off. Halo 2 made great improvements to gameplay, but the mood and the supporting cast didnt feel right. Marines were too cocky, even when they were dying off in droves. Johnson was more arrogant then badass in the final chapters. Something was just missing...
But in Halo 3 that all stands to change. The developers at Bungie have stated there intention to develop a dark game, meaning a return to Halo CE's ominous feel, or something even darker. The potential storytelling impact of anything from the Gravemind comming to earth, Cortana being overwhelmed by the Gravemind, the Covenant conquest of Earth, and the activation of Forerunner instilations could be dark, riviting, and artisticly done.
I cannot wait to see what Bungie has in store for the plot of Halo 3, but I hope for the darkest possible story. If the ending of Halo 3 is the END, of humanity, of all life...there will never be a fanfic or sequal to take away from what it ultimatly a work of art.
