it would add to the realism to the story but people have troble reading so it wouldnt be fair if anything they should give u the choice

  • 05.19.2006 2:48 PM PDT

yeah I agree, rather than having it set in stone one way, why not give the option to choose. I would like to see that. But still I am leaning toward one way right now.

English, I didn't see a problem in Halo 2; did you?

There were subtitles in Halo 2, but they still spoke English. It's kind of Awkward for me to have to read subtitles during a long cinematic. PLus, cinematics are when I actually blink during a videogame.

No reading, more listening. Reading makes you feel like it's just a videogame.

Well it wasn't really a technical issue, but I just thought it was weird having the covenant speaking english, it just doesn't look right when you see an elite talking english. A good example of this is the cutscene in the beginning of the arbiter level.

Well, since all UNSC people have translators the english be used rather then the covenant's language. The Arbiter knows his language so it would make some sense for it to be english so we feel like we know it to.

Still, I just liked how the covenant talked in halo 1, just because it gave them a mysteriousness about them and really made them feel more like alien invaders than halo 2 did.

Also in the books if I remember right there are some elites and other covenant actually can talk english themselves. Maybe they train themselves to help understand the enemy more?

(But then I may be horribly off on this and misunderstood something, but at least a few covenant definetely know english)

omg someones who been a member over a year replying? lol, I say keep the audio english, but have their mouths moving as if speaking their own language, translators dont make mouths move differently

Speaking english took away their "Alien-ness"
I liked the "AHHH OOHH BA BA" and "WORT WORT WORT"

Subtitles would be cool. But annoying after a while I think.

  • 05.19.2006 3:56 PM PDT

the covenant are not speaking english...their native language is simply translated by translation software installed in UNSC gear...subtitles would slow the game way down and not only that but it would no utilize all aspects that the MJOLNIR armor offers, and Master Chief would clearly be against that

if you know the Halo story then hearing english from the covenant is not a big deal, simply using the technology that the UNSC has to help win the war

I think grunts should speak english (due to the humor they give in battles)

I think however if u are playing the arbiter / watchin movies the language should be in english

and if you are playing humies / MC you dont understand what they are saying (again , unless in the movies..)

I wouldn't mind if they spoke / learned english tounge though

And yeah, Opey could probably win that game without using his BR. Best SMG user in Halo.

Technically, they already speak in their language, but the Chief's suti and the CNI Transponders [things in the back of the humans' heads] translates the Covenant language.

I think in Arbitor levels, covenant should speak in English, but in Master Chief levels, all but grunts should speak in Covenant language.

Help a brother out. Click on the referral link, sign up for a fun game, log in once for the next couple of days, then you never have to think about it again!

And yes. I understand how pathetic that is, but nobody reads these things anyway... right?

Master Chief has built in Translators, and obviously the Arbiter would speak his own language, so It would be easy to understand it for both of them. Also, it is just a video game! I would like it just to be in english so I don't have to strain my eyes for subtitles just to add 'realism', when a perfectly good english speech would have the same effect (I actually find them speaking english to be more realistic because of the translators.).

How about when the Master Chief speaks, there are Covenant subtitles!

They werent really speaking English it was just translated for the player to understand because it would get somewhat annoying to hear and elite barking away for a five minute cutscene...

you got a point, now that I think about it, it probably would get annoying in a cutscene. But how about this cutscenes they are in english, and in game no translation, like say if the tranlator for master chiefs suit was broken during the return to earth or something to make it fit with the story.

I may be wrong, but I thought that because of the way that universal
translators work, the voice and the mouth seem in sync.

I have always thought that internal universal translators don't actually
convert word to English (for example), but that words are associated with the relevant concepts in your mind after you've heard them.

This would mean that what you see them speak Covenant and you
hear them speak Covenant, but it makes sense to you. The same
way you would understand Japanese if it were your second language.
It would make you multi lingual without have to study any other language.

This may not be how the universal translators work in the Halo
universe, but I thought I'd mention it anyway.
