I was on halo.xbox.com and they released pics of the new Halo 4 action figures and they were calling that armor Mark VI.
Here is the image
That looks seriously dumb. One of the biggest problems being the ear-height shoulder pads. Talk about restricting movement.
The original Mk VI was perfect.
Wut.
He was talking about the armor from Halo 2/3.
And honestly, there ARE canon explainations for some of the armor changes.
Mk IV was used for so long because the UNSC simply couldn't figure out how to have a self sustained shield system. In 2551 they managed it with the Mark V, but their main focus was that it had shields, and that was it.
By the time Reach fell, a dozen other seperate upgrades had come out for it, while the Mark VI was already in production, once it came out, being superior to the Mark V, it made it, and all of the specialized, very expensive, add-ons to the Mk V obsolete.
Imagine if you will, someone wiring a better motor into an old junk car, and needing to wire a dozen other things in order to get it to work right, compared to just buying a newer better model, that was the difference between Mk V and VI.
Mark VII came about because ONI was going after a Spartan IV project, and since Beta 5 answers to nobody, they wanted their new toys going out with the best possible, we already know they contracted private companies to make Mk V variants. Plus, ONI has never really been frugal with it's spending habits.
But in reality, Mark VII appears to be based on the Mark VI platform, but with nanosystems to self repair, which has always been a failing point of MJOLNIR. It had automatic biofoam injectors, but no way to repair if it got damaged, either leaving the Spartan trapped inside, or unable to complete the mission and be killed in action, Sam was a perfect example of this.
