Subject: Undercover Moderators

I've been watching the Underground degrade while stosh ans Shishka have been gone- there are members posting spam just because they feel that they are free to do whatever they want while they're gone. This brings up my idea- Undercover Mods. We should have some "undercover" moderators that could go in and talk with the masses as a normal person- while keeping the forums under control. That way, if Shishka or Stosh were to leave, we could still catch the wrongdoers when they think that Shishka and Stosh have left. BAM! Sting operation right there ;-). And another bonus is that, because no one will know who the "undercover" mods are, no one will ever know when all of the mods are really gone. Everyone would always stay in line for fear that a mod was still searching the forums.

i know what you mean barron. The underground was getting out of hand. This is definetely proof that we need more mods.

Why, that is a capital idea. There was never a need for undercover mods before, but the situation has degraded enough to the point where undercover mods might be a necessity. And they can act all undercover and stuff, just like in the movies. You know, incognito.

  • 05.14.2004 11:31 PM PDT

We just need more. They shouldn't be undercover - they should be known so that people are discouraged from breaking the rules.

It doesn't really matter wether they are undercover or not, we need more. Because the Underground has to stop degrading, it needs to be upgraded.

If people think that, just because stosh and I have been gone, who's been good and who hasn't was never noticed, boy do they have another thing coming.

Yo Halo53, I'm real happy for you and I'ma let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best bungie.net profiles of all time. OF ALL TIME!

I, myself, only posted maybe 1 or 2 times in the underground before the new B.Net. Now I have probably posted about 5 times since the new B.Net. I think, as mentioned, we just need more moderators, undercover or not. I tried to help out and "step up" as I noticed a few other forum members alsp trying to do, politely letting a forum member know "This belongs in the underground, not the septagon" and stuff like that. I went into the underground the other day and I could not believe it. I posted specific examples in a different thread but I just posted in one of the threads "Just don't reply. 6 pages of spam. Treat this thread as if it were locked, like it would be."

I am not saying shishka and stosh haven't been doing their jobs. When they are here, they have locked what needs to be locked and all the other things a mod does. The problem is one of them can't be on at all times. Now that the Bungie Crew is returning from E3, they will have time to choose new moderators and this problem will be solved. The sooner more mods are chosen the better.

i believe you are talking about the lone ranger incident. I tried the same thing by saying: stop posting, this will be locked anyway. No effect. Stosh already warned us we would get flamed, but then what are we supposed to do? do nothing and let the fire spread?
I really wished there were some extra mods back then.
By the way, i was kind of suprised there weren't some back up./spare mods for situations like this, you know when all the mods are gone?

In all honesty I have given up on the underground. I don't have a lot of time between work and other things. Sifting through mounds of material that has no purpose has no appeal to me. Not only do I not post there, I don't even look. Sounds like I'm just being lazy but I really feel it's just being realistic.

  • 05.15.2004 7:57 PM PDT

Well. I think that it's the responsibility of us, who have been here for a while, to help the new people out. So, what I do is browse the Underground looking for new threads with no replies (or maybe 2 or three or something), and answer people's questions before they get flamed by the trolls. That's probably the most constructive way I can think of to help improve the state of the Underground.

You're never too good/veteran to help somebody new/ignorant out. Elitism is not cool.

Oh, and please, no firkin yellow banshee references! That is so old!

Yeah, if you're going to reference anything, it should be the pic I made of the Prophet shooting lightning out of its ass.

You need to realize with more popularity brings... more types of people. Therefore, we're bound to get more and younger kids coming to these forums. And we all know kids these days....

Clan O7AH

I ust said this in the Need more mods topic but i think its pertinent here too:::I think that everyone especaily the older members need to just take a step back and think about a couple of things. 1. Why did you join the 7th column in the first place. 2. If someone goes off randomly about somthing pertinent or not, will it effect your continued posting to this forum. 3. If you see a post like that in the first place should you take affense to it. I don't post very often but I have been reading for a while now, and I can see that there is a network of older members that discuss things in a friendly manner and that all of you know each other fairly well. It is apparent that there is going to be a very large influx of members to the 7th column becaus of E3, and Halo 2. It will take those people a while to get their bearings straight. Until then I there will be misplaced redundant topics, the occasoinal lunitic, and lets face it just some ignorant people. (I Don't claim not to be these) I think that you should continue to do your best to keep the exsting atmosphere that you have devloped here, to trust you mods to do their jobs, which they do fine, and just don't pay atention to those new people who choose to say stupid things.

I don't think we should give up the underground. I think more experienced members are required down there, you know, just to make sure the flaming doesn't spread, or that there will be no flaming at all.
And Reiginko, good plan.
If we're lucky then there should be a few new moderators very soon.

I have to say, sadly, that I have removed the Underground from my typical sweep of Bungie.net. Yeah, it's aweful. I went in there a week or two ago, and the only good thing I can say about it is the neato picture they have at the top.
The thing is there is absolutely no respect for anybody in there. People think they're just being a smart ass when they say, "Dude, just shut up." and really, they have to understand that if someone has something good to say, let them say it. If the thred is pointless, inform them, and let it be. Gees. [/tangent]

Are you just making that up off the top of your head? It's not that bad. I'm really not seeing too many jackass users. Theres a huge amount new users that ask new questions, but I'm not seeing too many flamers.

I agree with Reignko. We should try to help out. When I am there I have tried to help.

But with all of the old members being here and the new members being there, I sometimes feel that the septagon is a retirement home and the underground is a club of some sort. Damn kids. :D
