How can you guys say that the pistol was unrealistic! It's the most realistic weapon in the game! In real life there are pistols that use scopes (Here's a picture of one), they are pistols made specifically for one shot kills like sniper rifles but for closer range! And they are usually armed with armor piercing rounds.
Now, if you look at the M6D Pistol from Halo 1, it's rounds are exploding too! Exploding rounds are rounds that explode when they enter an object! And this is the future, so the armor piercing rounds are probably gonna be stronger then they are now.
If someone, wearing armor, get's hit by armor piercing rounds that explode, in the head, they are gonna be dead in at least 3 shots (I say at least because the first two shots might not fully penetrate the armor).
Now if you compare this to the other weapons in the game (like the rifles) you would think, "well why don't the rifles kill that fast". And it's simple, their not using exploding rounds! Their shots hit but don't explode, thus needing more shots to fully penetrate the armour and kill who's inside.
And yes the M6D pistol is balanced! Think of the M6D pistol in Halo 2, if it was a one handed gun (a guy you couldn't duel weild), how would it compare to the other weapons in the game? Also, in Halo 1, when your playing a game (like one on one), you die, your opponent get's all the weapons like Rocket Launcher, Sniper Rifle, ect. At least you still have a weapon that gives you a fighting chance! Will you win with just the pistol? Not always, but sometimes.
I play Halo 1 all the time, and I play Halo 2 all the time. I play both, and I never go through the game with just 1 weapon, you try to use just the pistol when playing Halo 1 with me and my friends, it doesn't do any good. Most of the time when I'm playing Halo 1, the first thing I do is switch me pistol with another weapon cause the pistol just doesn't cut it! If I'd stick with the pistol, my opponent would grab somethin like the shotgun, run right into my face and fire (then I'd be dead and they wouldn't). Or If I use only the pistol, I'd be looking for my opponent, and then BLAM! I'm dead cause they shot me with a sniper from so far away that I wouldn't even have been able to wound then me the pistol. The same is for almost ever weapon! Each weapon in the game beats the pistol in some way, some kill in less shots, some kill from farther away, some fire more shots but kill you faster, some kill you in the wake of their explosion, some track you and explode on impact, some charge are track you, ect.
The fact is, you can say the pistol is unbalanced all you want, the true is, is that it gives the game it's balance...
