I was talking Halo with a buddy and he asked a killer question...
Why do the prophets not allow humans an opportunity to join the Covenant. Why do they seemingly insist on killing the humans? Any imput would be appreciated...

It's not too known, but in the book Fall of Reach, the destroyer group sent to investigate Harvest just got a transmission from the Covenant when they first saw them saying they were an affront to the gods, and the covenant were their tool or some stuff like that... then opened fire and immediately destroyed most of the destroyer group.

"You must face the truth squarely and without flinching from duty. Our enemies are mortal no longer. Mercy for such as they is a chimera, self-deception is its only ally. Dedicate this weapon, given unto your hand at the behest of the Emperor, to their destruction. Regard its function as your only duty: you live only to bring cleansing fire."

the covies hate us cause we talked -blam!- about them when they werent looking so now they have a personal vendeta against humanity cause we cracked jokes about their moms

[Theory]
Prophets+Humans (Forerunners) are the old Covenant

When the Universe starts being taken over by Flood, they build the rings and the Ark on one of their distand Planets.

Both Species send a select few into the Ark, and we were meant to both live on Earth...Prophets being the power hungry bastards they are stole all the technology from us and went to a distant planet.

We had to re-evolve on our own with no technology, and our bible is the Old [and new] Covenant's religion, and after many years of the story being passed along people decided to write their versions of them..and now we have the book.

The Elites began to re-evolve from the tiniest lifeforms and when they became the way we see them today, Prophets fought them...
--Seeing their potential, the Prophets give them false promises and they begin to believe a fake religion..really, the old one but they make us seem like a terrible enemy.

The Covenant begins to form as more and more species are assimilated, once they are large enough and they have enough clues to the Forerunner locations, they start their attack/conquest.

The Prophets want to have all the glory this time, and try to get rid of the humans..word gets out ala 343 Guilty Spark and then all hell breaks loose (civil war)

Now comes Halo 3.

Erepublik: Save the world from oppression!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

We are at war, quite simply, its a Crusade.

"Your destruction is the will of the gods"

This indicates that their "gods" "ordered" them to destroy the humans. So its a war, and obviously, even if you have respect for your enemy, you still hate them.

I put on pants for this?

the exact same question is asked by an elite on the converstions from around the universe that came with the halo 2 special edition and they didnt have an answer either. read it to see if there is anything i might of missed.

Thanks for that info...I'll go check it out. I've gotta find one of those booklets. If bungie has posted info on this, it might be part of the story line that makes it into the third installment.

I'm not sure I agree with that statement. Bungie usually has fairly complex story lines in their games...that is why they are so popular. I would be shocked if there wasn't a story behind the animosity the prophets display toward humans...guess we will find out soon.

Pretty much yeah, I was about to post the same exact thing when I saw this. Basically the Covenant are all about religion, something the Prophets have tought them and given them a huge seat of power. The Prophets are now lying betraying bastards, with the power of the entire Covenant, a selection of diversed races, at their hand. I'm not sure why exactly the PROPHETS told them to attack earth, but I'm sure the COVENANT did it becuase the PROPHETS told them. Yeah that's pretty much it, we don't really know. Ask a writer or something.

As always, I leave with my critisizing edit:
"the covenant is the covenant and its just how the game was made... "

You're an idiot. Bungie isn't just a mindless game creator who just takes a crap on scrips and make writers deciper it into a game. They don't just have games like "Shoot this guy and try to dodge his slow-moving projectiles at the same time" or "Move the crude block" anymore. People have set standards for games now, so they aren't just a peice of crap that makes no sence. And if Bungie started making boring plotless games like "Shoot this guy and you win!", I'd probably go on a homicidal rampage.

...and some long as hell stuff I'm not going to repeat all of. Scroll up please.

That's a pretty good theory, good job. Kthxbye.

The Covenant's offcial story:

Humans impede the process of the great journey and are affronts to the Gods.

The Real Story:

Unknown, the Elites in private consider humans to be more tenacious than grunts, and wonder why the Absolution of the Covenant was not extended to humans. Ultimately the decision is up to the Prophets, so one must wonder, why the Prophets have made such a decision.

Thanks for that info. I guess it appears that no one "really" understands the anger the phophets have toward humans...maybe this is part of the plot of halo 3...this is what I'm starting to think now! Thanks

Because they're religious fanatics and their actions therefore usually have no basis in logic, but rather what ther Space Popes tell them to do.

Hey guys are we talking about before or after MC blew up their giant sacred ring?

coz if after...why wouldn't they hate us.
And if before..bungie hadn't thought of proghets yet.

  • 05.19.2006 10:54 PM PDT

You have free time... do you spend it or save it?

Its obvious in the books that the Covenant are attacking us woth religious purposes, so the humans are seen as blasphemous to them so they wage a holy war in the name of god and try to iradicate mankind.

  • 05.19.2006 10:56 PM PDT

ICE 0ne
a clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory

well if you go with that humans are the remains of the forerunners then we would obviously look like them. so the covenant find us. we're obviously not forerunners cause our technology is different and far inferior, but we look like them so we're an affront to the forerunners.
