Ninja Gaiden:
-Ninja Gaiden redifined the action genre and with the "Hurricane Pack Vol. 1 & 2" as quite possibily the best downloadble content ever, Ninja Gaiden has enough to hold its own ground, in my opinion. The Master Ninja Tournament was well received and It also has the reputation for being one of the best looking, fastest, and hardest games across all platforms.
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas:
-Grand Theft Auto 3 and Vice City redifined freedom and topped the sales charts longer than any game ever released. San Andreas promises to be about 6x larger and will take the series into a whole new unprecedented and unparalleled level of freedom. No online capabilities probably means that it will follow the tradition of GTA 3 and Vice City. A lot of fun, but for exactly how long?
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater:
-Fans are craving it, but surprisingly, it hasnt been as hyped as say Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2: SoL were. Does it have something to do with Kojima's decision to switch
from Solid Snake to Raiden in Metal Gear Solid 2? Has it been overshadowed by the Splinter Cell series? Is the Metal Gear Solid series losing its steam and popularity? Does Halo 2 have something to do with all this? What ever it may be, Snake Eater definetly looks interesting and there is no doubt in my mind that Kojima has crafted a genius storyline for it. Will it be good enough to take on Halo 2? Or will it be good enough to resurrect this series back to the way it used to be?
Metroid Prime 2: Echoes:
-The original Metroid Prime received very high scores from GameSpot ( 9.7 ) and IGN ( 9.8 ). It even ended up with an overall score of a 96% on GameRankings.Com. The game was a little overrated if you ask me, but because of the way it was received by the public, we just cant count this one out. It will now feature a whole new multiplayer aspect for up to 4 players. Previews claim that its a bit quirky and there is no way that it will even come close to matching the magnitude of Halo 2's multiplayer.
Star Wars: Sith Lords:
-Star Wars: KOTOR set the standard for XBOX RPG's and while Fable is an excellent RPG in its own right, it still doesnt have the depth and epic story of Star Wars. Sith Lords has been handed down to different development team, but the game looks as though it will follow the same path KOTOR. 40+ Gaming Publications also granted it the 2003 Game of the Year. The only thing that concerns me is whether it will be impressive enough to hold its own ground. Rehashing the same graphics engine and keeping the core gameplay pretty much untouched may leave a bit to be desired.
Splinter Cell 3: Chaos Theory:
-2 Splinter Cell games within the same year?! Pandora Tomorrow was a stutter step improvement over Splinter Cell in the single player campaign, but it introduced an entirely new and revolutionary online mode that pit Spies vs Mercs. It became one of the most popular XBOX Live games and is still ranked among the most played online games on the XBOX. Chaos Theory looks to up the ante once again for the stealth action genre and with a Co-Op only online mode, it should bring team work gameplay to a whole new level.
Prince of Persia 2: Warrior Within:
-We cant count this one out. Ninja Gaiden may be its only real competition, but the original Prince of Persia took top Game of the Year honors just as Star Wars: KOTOR did. The Warrior Within looks darker, cooler, and even more enjoyable than the original! My eyes havent been able to believe half the stuff Ive seen in the trailers. It may not have the fanbase and size to take on Halo 2, but it will definetly have a heart to take on the rest of the competition.
KillZone:
-If it isnt so. KillZone. The game many have claimed will be the "Halo Killer". Updated previews state that the single player campaign brings a whole new meaning to ambitious and it really makes you feel as if you are a part of a real war, but the multiplayer aspect is a different story. It feels very basic and uninteresting. Not so much an after thought, but not as impressive as the single player campaign. It has time to improve, but it may very well end up being PS2's only true answer to Halo, even if it isnt exactly as good.
I left out others such as The Chronicles of Riddick, Burnout 3: Takedown, Pandora Tomorrow, Fable, etc. However, I believe the ones I listed truly are Halo 2's only competition this year for the Game of the Year award. As for the PC, Half Life 2 will be Halo 2's only competition, if and only if it lives up to all the hype. I'd have to say that Halo 2's best competition for the 2004 Game of the Year award would have to be Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, only because it is probably the equivilant of Halo(2) on the PS2 ( popularity, sales, fan base, impact in the game industry, etc. ). What do you think?
