If anyone could help me with this it would be greatly appreciated. Basically I can get the game to run, i.e. I am able to walk around and fire my gun and be killed and stuff. However, there are large blocks of empty space all over the screen and any 3-d object (soliders, guns, trees, etc) give off a bleed of their colors all the way across the screen. I've tried EVERYTHING I could find online, made sure I had the newest drivers, messed around with all possible combinations of settings, and so on. At one point it worked cleanly for a few minutes, but nothing since then.

Here is a link to a screen shot of the problem (without the block problem going on in the background, that seems to go away pretty often now) : http://www23.brinkster.com/cowboyonslaught/halo-rifle.jpg

I've been waiting to play this game online for a while and finally built a computer powerful enough to run it, and I'm running into this. If anyone has any idea how to fix this I'd be very thankful.

You need to list your computer's components and what tests you are able to run without similar problem(3dmark03, pcpitstop.com's diagnostic tool, dxdiag?).

With out this basic information, no one can really help you.

Sorry, should of thought of posting that basic information in the first place.

Components:
Operating System: Windows XP Pro
Processor: Pentium 4 2.40 GHZ
Memory: 512 MB, dual channel
DirectX Version: 9.0c
Video Card: Radeon 9800 128MB

When I run the dxdiag tests, I have no problem with with the DirectDraw Test. On the Direct3D test where it shows the 3d box with logos on the side, I have no problem on the first parts of the tests but the last few times it shows the boxes only 3 or 4 sides of them appear.

On the 3dmark03 tests, they had the same problem I have in the game of the grid of small blank spaces appearing all over the screen. The test results were OK, but what I was watching had the same appearance problem.

Hope this helps with determining the problem, thanks a lot.

First off, nice rig. Secondly, you should now know the problem isn't Halo, but is either your video card or (if your lucky) only the drivers/some software conflict.

You might want to uninstall, then reinstall your video drivers and direct x. Make sure you do a real-good uninstall (look for other video drivers that may be causing a conflict).

If this doesn't work, you need to try a different video card. I actually had the exact same problems you described when I replaced my 9800pro with a 6800(regular version)-found out I had just gotten a bad video card from newwegg and got a replacement, then all the problems went away (Direct X, 3dMark, and Halo problems were all fixed).

-Installed inf files for your motherboard (includes the right AGP support) intel or VIA?

-Did you uninstall your old drivers, turned off the PC and installed the new graphics card and then the new latest drivers?

-Have you overclocked your Radeon or your CPU/memory?

-Do you have the right speed settings for your memory and AGP in your bios?

-Checked for conflicts in hardware device manager?

Otherwise maybe you should return the graphics card.
