What are your thoughts on this? This thread right here shows the negative effects of allowing the OP to change the title of the thread. This isn't the first time I've seen something like this happen either. I've seen it happen several times where the OP will a question like "how old are you" then change the title to something completely inappropriate. I understand the appeal of being able to change the title if you made a grammatical error of some type but I personally think the cons outweigh the pros of being able to change the title. So what are your thoughts on this, Should the OP be allowed to edit the title of his thread?

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

You can edit your thread title as long as it is not a Poll. People would abuse it if it was available for polls.

Have you seen my mind anywhere? I seem to have lost it...

0x0 x0x 0x0 000 000 x0x 000
x0x 0x0 0x0 0xx 000 0x0 000
x0x x0x x00 0xx 0x0 x0x 0x0

I have seen you future

While I guess you could abuse the idea of changing a thread title, there are so many good things that come from being able to change a thread title: Posting current information, counts, even correcting a typo (it happens). The OP should be able to change a thread title.

You are missing the point of this thread.

OT: It is fine for repurposing a thread or fixing a grammar error, but there will always be people that abuse it.

  • 02.16.2012 4:27 PM PDT

No! because it could be changed to something completely unrelated and so on

Hear the word of Pharaoh. Build unto me a statue of ridiculous proportion. One billion cubits in height......that I might be remembered for all eternity!

Who the hell do you think I am?

Well, I think it usually has more positive effects than negative effects. (Except for that situation, of course)

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

Of course we should be able to edit thread titles. Threads change, thus titles need to be able to be changed. Everyone makes typos, etc. Think about Duardo's multitude of FAQs. If he couldn't edit them, they would probably not be nearly as successful and helpful as they are now.

Some people will abuse it....but so what? Some people abuse EVERYTHING. People who abuse the feature will be dealt with, as they always are.

  • 02.16.2012 4:38 PM PDT

Yes but not for poll titles though. So many reasons...

Yes because sometimes mistakes are made or the topic changes. Every once and a while an asshat will make a thread then change the topic as a joke, but it doesn't really cause any harm.

The positives outweigh the negatives.

My internet stinks and I sometimes double post. I hate it.

Yes. It erraneously difficult to get away with inappropriate name changes; and the original post tends to get reported and sent to the moderator queue. It's also worth mentioning that if the title is changed after page one, the first page displays what the initial title was, while the second page displays the new title (you'll note in the thread you provided that the title was "How many days do you clop to rarety?" followed by the second page reading "How many times a day do you brush your teeth?"). So you'll tend to get the idea if someone is constantly toying with the OP.

Even if you circum to the editing of titles, who cares?

I agree, everyone makes mistakes.

I acknowledge my user name is stupid. However, I promise I'm not.

Disclaimer: The latter is a lie.

Yes.

Minor instances like the one you linked is well.. minor. People usually do that to get attention for about 1 minute, the thread is locked and OP is banned shortly after. I usually rename my threads when the conversation has gone into a different direction.

People that create very useful FAQ's often rename their threads during creation. Mods have a banhammer for a reason. Don't fix what ain't broke!

For the record, I replied to that thread when it was about brushing teeth not what he edited it to be. I am not a brony, but I do like dental hygiene.

Yes.

I don't think changing it for humor happens often enough to be a big problem, and it's one of bnet's endearing quirks when it does occur. People could always get cheap giggles by posting inappropriate links and the like.

This reminds me of the "How thick are Shiska's nipples?" thread. Classic moment. It was pretty funny, but it is one of the downsides to being able to change the title a thread I suppose. But it has more ups than downs. Like being able to change a mistake, a chage in topic, or asking for it to be locked.

So I voted 'Yes'.

Of course they should be allowed to. Cases like this are in such a small minority that it's almost laughable that you're using something like this as an argument.
