Subject: Should the OP be allowed to edit his thread title?

What if Duardo or another ninja did something like "Destiny FAK" instead of "Destiny FAQ" and then stickied it? It would be a disgrace to Bungie and the ninjas forever.

Don't worry, you're still your mom's favorite Bnet member.

I think the benefits outweigh the rare trollings.

Sorry for taking so long to reply, I'll try to cover all the points made throughout the thread. I do admit that my judgment may have been somewhat clouded due to me finding those threads to be annoying, so I may have added some bias in making the thread.

While I guess you could abuse the idea of changing a thread title, there are so many good things that come from being able to change a thread title: Posting current information, counts, even correcting a typo (it happens). The OP should be able to change a thread title.

Of course we should be able to edit thread titles. Threads change, thus titles need to be able to be changed. Everyone makes typos, etc. Think about Duardo's multitude of FAQs. If he couldn't edit them, they would probably not be nearly as successful and helpful as they are now.

Some people will abuse it....but so what? Some people abuse EVERYTHING. People who abuse the feature will be dealt with, as they always are.
You two make great points, threads do change over time, the titles may have to change to accommodate for further discussion in the thread. Also, we all are human, we will make mistakes and I would like to be able to correct my mistakes as well.

Yes. It erraneously difficult to get away with inappropriate name changes; and the original post tends to get reported and sent to the moderator queue. It's also worth mentioning that if the title is changed after page one, the first page displays what the initial title was, while the second page displays the new title (you'll note in the thread you provided that the title was "How many days do you clop to rarety?" followed by the second page reading "How many times a day do you brush your teeth?"). So you'll tend to get the idea if someone is constantly toying with the OP.

Even if you circum to the editing of titles, who cares?
I already knew of the title changing back to the original when you look at the next pages, I've always wonder why they did that as well, is there a reason? Also, it is not as much as me falling for the thread that angers me as it is how it diminishes for discussion value. It just angers me for some reason.

Yes.

Minor instances like the one you linked is well.. minor. People usually do that to get attention for about 1 minute, the thread is locked and OP is banned shortly after. I usually rename my threads when the conversation has gone into a different direction.

People that create very useful FAQ's often rename their threads during creation. Mods have a banhammer for a reason. Don't fix what ain't broke!

Of course they should be allowed to. Cases like this are in such a small minority that it's almost laughable that you're using something like this as an argument.
You guys are also correct, those kind of threads are usually minor. I'm not sure why as to why I was blowing this out of proportion. Those types of threads usually anger me and I've must have been too hasty in creating this thread.

To further add to the discussion of the thread. What rules do you think should be implemented when it comes to changing thread titles. Should it be a one time only change, should there a limit be based off of a set amount trust or based on your title bars, or should there a unlimited amount of changes available and just deal with those that abuse it?

Yes I think we should be able to change it. Even though I don't create threads that often.

The tide is turning, brothers! Let us take our kingdom back!

OT: It is fine for repurposing a thread or fixing a grammar error, but there will always be people that abuse it.This. I usually try to proofread, but sometimes I'll need to edit it.

I'm not certain, but it might be the Bungie.net server saving the title to some database. Then - when an OP edits the title - the database saves the new title and shows it from that point onward. Going back to prior pages will still show the old title, as it's still saved.

Also, it is not as much as me falling for the thread that angers me as it is how it diminishes for discussion value. It just angers me for some reason.
That thread didn't have much discussion value to begin with. Scenarios like that one you provided shouldn't get to you or rifle you up, especially considering at how rare in fact they are. Not to mention that that is what the OP has as a goal when they perform this scheme; to get people irritated or annoyed.

Considering at how rare the abuse of it is, we shouldn't restrict the majority of users who don't abuse it with those that do. Doing so would cause inconvience, with the result of only stopping a minor problem.

"You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don't try to forget the mistakes, but you don't dwell on it. You don't let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space." -Johnny Cash

I think that you should be able to edit your thread title (even for polls) mainly because of grammar, spelling, and other mistakes. I can't tell you how many times I've overlooked a mistake when making a poll and was frustrated that I couldn't fix it. Of course people will abuse it, but it's not that big of a deal since it doesn't happen too often.

smart, interesting, seems out of place.

Official fan of Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, (Problem with that?) Halo, and Bungie, also a total gaming junkie.

Oh teh noez, somebody just changed his thread title to something comical?! WE MUST STOP EVERYBODY FROM CHANGING THEIR THREAD TITLES!! NAO!!!

I vote yes, yes he/she should be able to.

  • 02.17.2012 7:15 AM PDT

Tin shacks and catfish bones.

Yes. There are plenty of scenarios where changing the title is helpful and necessary.

Those who abuse it will be dealt with.

  • 02.17.2012 7:18 AM PDT

Jack of all trades, master of none.

That poster got banned in the end anyway, even if it did take a while. People make mistakes, don't let the minority affect the majority.

  • 02.17.2012 7:20 AM PDT

Yes, if the OP has something inappropriate in the title he can get a warning or get blacklisted. It's usefull if the title is grammaticaly incorrect or just needs a change.

Yes, for the reason stated above.

I suspect llamas are secretly wizards. I <3 poptarts n' milk. I like me. Grimick is defined as: a logical parodox, the act of funnaling a potato down your throat, and a deliciously flavored muffin (with pecons and blueberries). Norway is the Swedish word for 'moron'. My sister has cancer, so i get to use handicap parking and cut small children in line at Disneyland.

"Don't eat doughnuts on thin ice."

"The pancake, my friend, has officially been flipped."

I think that the ability to change the name of your thread is a crucial part of the bungie experience. I don't think such functions should be limited or removed.
