I think the melee attack shoukld be reduced alot its way to powerful and unrealistic and get rid of the lock on / rush forward aspect of it aswell. Instead leave it the way it was in halo 1 but put in combos so alot more skill is required.

They toned it down for Halo 2. Then they toned it back up. It's better that way. And unrealistic? Hitting someone over the head with something as solid as a gun with that much force can kill someone.

Read the books to learn just how powerful the spartans are, besides the melee is the same for everyone, so it doesnt really matter.

Fair points but i think they should at leas take of the weird dashy forward lock on with the normal weapons and also make the animation look more than just a tap. Not to mention combos, not sure how they would worl though.

No offence but how would combos require more skill?..................

Just curious at this...............

I agree that the lock on/lunge forward attack with guns is a little too fake for me.

Cause you would have to land 2 maybe 3 weaker hits rather than one powerful locked on one.

I don't mind how strong the melee attack is, but I do mind the lock-on auto-lunge aspect of it in Halo 2. I like the way it was in Halo 1... it had a (fairly unrealistic) long reach to hit someone, but it didn't move you character at all, and you could aim your strikes a bit, depending on what gun you were carrying.

I don't see how that requires a player to be more skilled..............

Now that I think about it, I had many instances where one hit wasn't enough to kill an opponent..........so I don't see the problem.................

Take away the auto lunge/lock
Make the melee animations look more strong and brutal (The SmG's melee is like you are playing duck duck goose or something)
Make it so that if you hold down the melee button (for lke a second) than you do a stronger attack with slightly more force than the current attacks. However if you wanna do combos you just quickly tap the melee button so that each attack does less damage.
Make melee attack context-sensitive. Bungie has a HUGE staff now so make it so that the melee attack you do with each weapon is determined by what context it is. Like if they are crouching make it so that you smash your gun over their head. However if you are doing a lighter melee attack you just quickly smash your weapon in their face and when they turn their head in recoil you can either do a strong attack with you smashing the butt of your gun in their cheek, breaking their neck, or a lighter attack with a quick smash across their face.
Just a suggestion, but it could be really neat. Considering Assasin's Creed has over 750 animations, I'm pretty sure Bungie could do this.

Screw that number. Actually Assasin's Creed has over 4000 animations for the main character alone. Holy -cow

You really can't have melee combos seeing that you need all the other buttons for different uses maybe they could loosen up on the lunge a bit and maybe take out the sword entirely or balence it into game play some how. Maybe halo 3 will be about stradigy and not who has the best weapon at the moment. Sorta like halo 1 where everyone started out with a pistol and everyone had a chance to survive. Then bring out your ar when you are out of ammo or in close range.

Perhaps tone the jump/running melee damage multiplier down a little, but the base attack strength is fine. Having to hit the enemy 6 times is stupid.

Umm, if chief can flip a tank i dont see how hitting som1 with a blunt object shouldnt hurt.

The lunge in the melle is kinda weird tho
