Subject: Can you get permitted by a moderator to make a political thread?

I was wondering if I -- or anybody else -- could get a permit by a moderator to make a thread about politics. More specifically, I was wondering if I could make a semi-political thread about what you are (politically), and your strongest views.

Is this possible?

You could always try PMing a moderator, I doubt they would let you break the rules though.

Stupidity, when sufficiently advanced, is indistinguishable from magic

No, there's more than one mod. You could ask them if they think it would be okay (if it's in a gray area of sorts), but what you're suggesting sounds like a no-go.
Although there are some good private groups for that sort of thing.

Why do people want to discuss politics so bad?

Why not just go to /pol/? Ya know, somewhere where politics are supposed to be. This is a video game developers website for Christ's sake...

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

The "no political or religious discussion" rule comes from Bungie, not the moderators. Remember that we are a group of community member volunteers who merely enforce the rules that Bungie promulgates. We cannot and would not give permission for political threads unless Bungie instructed us to (such as the SOPA thread which was posted by a Bungie employee).

A thread about what you are politically and your strongest views would not be "semi-political." It would be blatantly political discussion and prohibited by the forum rules. Sorry man.

I asked a few mods this same question over PM. This was pretty much the answer they all gave me.

Edit: Ninja'd by a ninja, damn!

The website of a video game developer with pretty much zero information on their next project, and which most previous games have been handed over to another party. Why are you discussing anything on here?

Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.

We (as a team and as individuals) go to great lengths to never "endorse" or "approve" a topic or thread. Even a moderator posting in a topic is not a "seal of approval" or an immunity from the enforcement of other ninja.

No one can predict where a topic will go after the OP. A topic that is borderline may stay in the safe area, or it could stray into dangerous territory. It could be seen as "borderline, but okay for now" by one moderator and "sorry, but this is over the line" by another.

We trust and respect each other and allow for those differences in opinion and perception when it comes to borderline topics. For example, I wouldn't want a colleague to hold back their action just because they saw me posting in a topic. If it crosses their line and they were going to lock it, then they should do so without worries of "hurting my feelings".

Key

I don't understand how you think a thread about people posting their political views and explaining them will not get political.

...

That is the definition of a political thread.

If you were to give the most basic and core example of a political thread, that is the example you would give. That right there.

  • 02.19.2012 5:28 PM PDT

Nope. You could try joining a private group though.

“Oh, it’s a little bit of everything, it’s the mountains, it’s the fog, it’s the news at six o’clock, it’s the death of my first dog, it’s the angels up above me, it’s the song that they don’t sing, It’s a little bit of everything.”
- Dawes, A little bit of everything

Leave that -blam!- to private groups, I could care less here.

Probably not. Too many views to politics and extreme ones too.

  • 02.19.2012 6:01 PM PDT

Yeah I've been told moderators aren't even allowed to approve threads in general anymore. So no 'this thread was approved by a moderator' stamps.

A good rule of thumb: If you think the thread might cross a line, just don't post it at all. Don't try to find a loophole or something. Just... leave it be. It'll be less likely to result in people getting pissed.

They'd shoot it down. The reason politics are against the rules is to stop flaming. And ALL political threads lead to a flame war.

Usually this. I've seen threads go on for a while before they are turned into just pointless flaming but they rarely last.

Love playing custom games?

Well come join Customs Evolved

We are group dedicated to playing custom games, map testing, game nights, etc. Anyone is welcomed to join, and we hope to have as much fun as possible!

I don't see why people should be discussing politics or perhaps religion on a video game developer site in the first place. That question is just completely irrelevant at Bungie.net. (and also every other game developer site out there)

“Strange,” mused the Director, as they turned away, “strange to think that even in Our Ford’s day most games were played without more apparatus than a ball or two and a few sticks and perhaps a bit of netting. imagine the folly of allowing people to play elaborate games which do nothing whatever to increase consumption.”

I can think of a private group where some political threads don't end in flame-wars.

If any political discussion exist in this forum, they would be immediately locked.

I don't think you'll get a permission to create such thread by asking a moderator, but it's worth the try.

And the Shadow fell upon the Land, and the World was riven stone from stone. The oceans fled, and the mountains were swallowed up, and the nations were scattered to the eight corners of the World. The moon was blood, and the sun was as ashes. The seas boiled, and the living envied the dead. All was shattered, and all but memory lost, and one memory above all others, of him who brought the Shadow and the Breaking of the World. And him they named Dragon.

Pretty much. We don't do this, ever.
