Subject: Was it like this last time?

This is more a questions for some of the longer serving members of bungie.net, but were the forums like this when halo 2 was announced? As you all know the halo 3 forum is a nightmare with people posting the same thing over and over again. If it was how long did it take to calm down? Thanks guys.

When Halo 2 was announced, there was only 2 main forums. The Underground and The Septagon. The forums where alot less advanced then they are now. The site looked very different. Halo 3 has brought probably millions more to the site then Halo 2 did.
Oh and people seemed to be alittle smarter. Maybe there wasn't alot of little kids, I don't know. Back then I didn't have my Antihero account, I only visited the site maybe once every 2 weeks.

i started posting around when the current site was brought up (one you are looking at). I had my account before, i just never posted because i was new to the forums. A few months later i joined the forums, and became a active member. Back when people were speculating about halo 2, the forums were slow, and had some really good topics. During that time, there we few locked posts, and there were on 2-3 main moderators, Shishka, Stosh, and Yoozel. After halo 2 came out, and the bungie forums literally exploded, and the forums i onced loved to read were suddenly flooded by all sorts of topics, repeated speculations, and anger at bungie because halo 2 didnt turn out how they wanted it. The Halo 3 forums is just people who came to bungie.net after halo 2 came out, and just started speculating about what will happen...even though its just a 2-3 minutes trailer...

not as bad, most of the idiocy has built up from 12 year old live players being referred here from xbox live, and then their idiociy being condensed by not enough rule reading and heavy, brutal enforcement. By which i mean, there was not enough beating into skulls that rules are needed and have to be followed.

Mourne not your comrades who must dwell / too strong to strive -
Within each steel-bound coffin of a cell, / Buried alive;
But rather mourne the apathetic throng / The cowed, and the meek -
Who see the world’s great anguish and its wrong / And dare not speak.

in summary, before halo2, things were pretty quite. You could actually know or remember most of the people on the forum. As soon as the buzz for halo2 started reaching a fever pitch this place turned into a total zoo. I dont think Bungie was prepared for the shear army of people showing up practically over-night. Things are much better now, than they have been recently, although I miss my old account.

I hate everything, but it's not my fault.

It was definately less chaotic, but worse in some ways. Most discussions went in The Underground, as the Halo 2 forums came later. So it was impossible to ignore; whereas now, I can simply never go into the Halo 3 forum. But there was far less stuff being posted, and I'm pretty sure that the average person was smarter, but my memory is almost certainly tinted by nostalgia. However, I do distinctly remember having actual intelligent discussions on New Mombasa and Zanzibar.

It's very late, but here are some topics which I remember were very popular, just to give you an idea. (and were mostly posted many, many times. But not as much as the H3 forum. That got, what, 300 pages in 2 days?)

What are those green projectiles in the new screenshot? (They turned out to be Carbine bullets; I thought they were new needler rounds, for some reason)
Should the sword be in MP? (I was against it.)
There should be bots in MP (I was for it.)
Will there be multiple Spartans in Halo 2? (I think I thought there would be.)
Should the pistol remain in its current form? (I was for this.)
Is Cortana rampant? (I thought so. And maybe I was right.)
Should there be more than 2 players in Co-Op? (I think I thought that was too many.)
How many people do you want in MP? (I don't remember at all.)
And of course, lots and lots of theories on all kinds of stuff, all of which turned out to be almost completely wrong. Although Bungie could make a few of them true, depending on how they do Halo 3.

I think Halo 3 wins for sheer horror in a single forum, but New Mombasa was pretty bad around the time of ILB and when it was found out that the Enkidu Terminals were fan-made. Man, that was quite a backlash.

Halo 2 forums became very popular. Not to the extent of Halo 3's forum, but I got to see many new members within a few weeks.

Im quite sure that Halo 3's release will invite many more people to join, if not already.

RCG: In ur base, steelin' ur flagz. | Watch the demo, then join the carnage!

I remember people were a little more respectful; before the release anyway... Screenshots were posted with trepidation, not with a second account and people were afraid of the moderators.

Although GJJ is doing a good job of instilling some of that fear back into the new wave! =)

It was quite... fast... when Halo 2 was announced. I feel thankful I didn't yet have an account set up.
