Oh look, people under estimating the Brutes...again. If the Brutes were "stupid" or "retarded" they wouldn't have reached tier 4 or even exist for that matter.
They may not be as smart as the Elites or Humans but that doesn't mean they're stupid. Combat wise the Elites and Brutes are almost evenly matched, the only thing bringing the Brutes down is they're aggressive nature.
I agree, underestimate an enemy = giving them an advantage.
Brutes are stupid, in matters of let's say math or art. But warfare? Combat? They are cunning and brilliant. The chopper for example. The engineer built it as a plow/tractor, and the brutes instantly took it and turned it to an absolutely deadly machine of carnage.
People also forget a major, major detail. A marine squad (no heavy weapons/no turret) faces a brute chieftain, or a group of brutes. Let's say they manage to kill a few and then the remaining ones or one of them goes berserk. You think the marines would sit there and manage to keep their fire/calm with a roaring, enraged brute going full speed (which is as fast as Master Chief at least) toward them?
To be honest. Any species could have seen a combat advantage of the vehicle the engineer made. They only added a mounted gun/turret. To make a point on that, the engineer made that vehicle. Not the brutes.
We only need to look at the space battle above the Ark in Halo 3 to find the brutes "Intelligence". They outnumbered the Elites 3 to 1 and still lost.
And how? To superior tactical brilliance and intelligence for the knowledge of battle.
It may have been a space battle. But to those odds and superior firepower, Im sure much of the intelligence transfer to the battles on the ground as well.
