Subject: Why can't we have a Filter/Block function?

While this would be a nice feature to have, it could possibly effect the activity of the forums if people start blocking each other too much. Think about it, if someone blocks you, your thread won't even show up to them. Even though this has a small chance of happening, I thougt I would just throw it out there.
This is why I like the idea that blocking someone minimizes all their posts (and threads on the Forum Home) instead of removing them from your view completely.

The blocking feature would only affect the people who block the user.
Yes, I think I know how it would work.
Posted by: CrazzySnipe55
Therefore the reduced size of the threads would be nothing but beneficial to them.
Would it really though? If a guy in real life that you don't like is talking with you and your friends you would partly listen instead of blocking him out completely. It would only hamper your input in discussion because if the topic of conversation because of the blocked user, you are now behind the curve.

Everyone's opinion of an annoying user is different. Saying "yes thread quality would drastically improve because of blocking" isn't true. There's beneficial members of the community who would be blocked because of their smug jerk faces!!! ;-).

I believe it's not a brilliant "We need it now!!!" priority. There are good things about it though, don't get me wrong. I could finally block all the mythics and their shiny hats and crappy opinions that disagree with me!!!

No it wouldn't. Something you're all failing to realize is that this is a user feature. By no means does this effect Bungie.net or anyone's experience here -- this is personal. And don't assume just because one person is going to block a user, that the rest will follow. That's not how it should work.
I think you might have misunderstood what I was saying. If everyone blocks different users then the website experience changes for everyone (individually of course). Two users could see a reply count smaller than the forum states, but who says they would see the same replies?

Lets say "I want more mods" has 15 replies.
User A goes into the thread and can only read 7 posts because of his blocked list. He reads posts from users D,F,G,H,J,U,I
User B goes into the thread and can only read 10 posts because of his block list. He reads posts from users D,F,H,J,Q,L,I,X,U,Z.

Does that make a bit more sense?

The point of the feature is to ignore people who say things that you think are totally invaluable in a discussion, people who have never and (in your opinion) never will make a post worth the effort it takes to read it.

The ignore feature is to ignore immaturity, stupidity, or anything else you think makes a person someone who you don't even want to bother skipping over. It is not to block people who disagree with you.

Think of the PM system. Someone could PM me a message about how they like the AR more than the BR. I could be adamantly against this opinion and block said person because of it.

It is, essentially, legal abuse of the "block user" feature as it was clearly not meant to taper your exposure to other people's opinion, but rather to keep you from talking to people who choose to converse in an inappropriate manner, spam you with group invites, or just spam you in general.

The same goes for an "ignore" feature.

I totally understand what you're saying. I just think that implying the community will use it in the same way as you is a bit redundant. I know that me and you might only block users that have never contributed positively to a conversation but to assume that everyone will do that is a bit silly, no offense. There's plenty of users that will block on a "I don't like you based on your title bar or avatar". However, their block list wont really effect me as it's entirely personal.

I suppose I'm assuming that once the feature is introduced everyone would use it immediately. Which isn't the case, it's up to a users discretion.

Invaluable means "Extremely useful" by the way. Just incase you weren't aware. :-).

Gaaaaaah I meant something more along the lines of worthless.

Why does that word have to look so negative...

I think that would be a great feature also. How would you see a blocked user's thread in a specific forum though?

I don't know how difficult it would be, but perhaps even the THREAD is minimized?

It affects the users that use it. Why grow with the community and become more mature, more open minded, why learn restraint to reply to spam or restraint to flame? When you can stay the same immature user who only allows a certain flow of information to them?

Why have to learn restraint from people who bother a user to begin with? You shouldn't have to deal with people who are a constant nuisance to you. This is a problem which may (and probably has) drive members away from a community to begin with.

It's not immature; it's about enhancing a users experience. One shouldn't have to resort to restraining from flaming, abuse, or replying to spam if there is something which can stop a user altogether; and it's hard to grow when you have to put up with it all the time. Every user has a threshold where they are going to go from "maturing" (via restraint), to plain out attack, and possibly getting themselves in trouble. Something like this feature would minimise this problem.

However, I'd only be in support of it if it had a toggle at will option.
I refer you to...

Wait OP, do you want the post like the blacklist notice? Completely blocked?

I had a suggestion a while back in which ignored users would be collapsed just like a reported user...it would be like a cookie on your browser that lists all the users you've chosen to ignore.

Case and point: don't worry about it. Girls start getting boobies pretty soon, and then you'll have plenty of other things to think about. Being an Inheritor is not a life goal.
-TGP-

I remember I brought the idea for this feature up before, and someone else made a huge thread about it. I'll see if I can find the thread.

Here we go. Thirty pages of good responses.
[edit] Well, I didn't see the huge link on the 2nd page that had the same destination. My responses stay the same as in the other thread, I love this idea and can't really think of a way this could be abused. [/edit]

No, I think it would be bad. I see people that are annoying occasionally. If they are breaking the rules, I PM a moderator and they will remove them from the forums if it is bad.
But if they only annoy you, without breaking the rules? Why not?

Ken is only mad because there is actually a greasemoney script/chrome extension that blocks his posts and threads already.

Tin shacks and catfish bones.

I already have a block feature. It's called "scroll". I just use this nifty mouse wheel and zoooooooom! The reply is gone.

  • 02.24.2012 10:25 AM PDT

In general I don't support such a feature, because I believe that members should just learn to deal with other users that they don't like. I really don't want Bungie.net to become an echo chamber, nor do I want potential member growth inhibited by a reflexive response to block everything that they don't agree with.

However, if such a feature were to be implemented, it would make me feel much better if the feature simply collapsed posts by the blocked user instead of voiping them off the face of the forum, and it would be nice if they wore off after a period of time. And there's no need to hide threads entirely by the offending user, simply going to the thread, seeing that the OP is collapsed, should be more than enough.

That's what I keep pushing....It would be like a reported post....and a cookie would be placed on your browser.

No. It isn't a fair feature, and has the potential to be abused. It would mean someone could end up just completely ignored by everyone and isolated from the whole community, that would just be terrible. People would surely abuse it, blocking other users just because they disagree with their opinion, and for no other reason. Just ignore posts that are annoying, instead of generalizing users with, oh, this post sucks so he must just suck over all and I never want to see his posts again.

No one else but the user who has them blocked would be affected. You wouldn't go in a thread and see gaps all over the place. Just imagine seeing a lot of reported posts and only YOU would see them.

That fact is... I don't want to be ignored, because someone didn't agree with me. I do not like the idea of someone blocking me, and it would make me paranoid. I don't want to be trying to talk to someone, and they don't even know I'm there.

What Hylebos suggested would be closer to acceptable, though. If the posts were collapsed only, the feature would have less potential for abuse. The user's avatar and titlebar should still appear when their posts are collapsed, though.

It isn't our shiznit anymore.

I skimmed this thread so sorry if this has already been said but have we covered the "being able to block shocksite spam posts" argument yet? Simply waiting for a moderator to eventually ban that person not only wastes forum-goer time, but de-rails and often kills promising threads.

As for the "No because we have to mature by sifting through all of the -blam!-" argument, since when should you decide how I browse the internet? So what if it's not healthy for me and I miss out on all of the incredible intellectualism that regularly graces this site, if I want to live in bliss I should be able to have the convenience to do so.

I could make the exact same argument for whatever vices you enjoy, and you would be against me taking that privilege away.
