I skimmed this thread so sorry if this has already been said but have we covered the "being able to block shocksite spam posts" argument yet? Simply waiting for a moderator to eventually ban that person not only wastes forum-goer time, but de-rails and often kills promising threads.

As for the "No because we have to mature by sifting through all of the -blam!-" argument, since when should you decide how I browse the internet? So what if it's not healthy for me and I miss out on all of the incredible intellectualism that regularly graces this site, if I want to live in bliss I should be able to have the convenience to do so.

I could make the exact same argument for whatever vices you enjoy, and you would be against me taking that privilege away.
Mods don't prevent infractions, just respond to them.

Citizens of Me! The cruelty of the old Pharaoh is a thing of the past. Let a whole new wave of cruelty wash over this lazy land.

Hear the word of Pharaoh. Build unto me a statue of ridiculous proportion. One billion cubits in height......that I might be remembered for all eternity!

And be quick about it!

Only it should say their name instead, with 'blocked user' written beside.

Not even their name, "you have chosen to block this user" or something like that.

That fact is... I don't want to be ignored, because someone didn't agree with me. I do not like the idea of someone blocking me, and it would make me paranoid.
People keep bringing up this idea as though someone is going to immediately hit the block button whenever a differing opinion pops up - I think this "issue" is greatly exaggerated.

What makes you think this is going to happen, and why am I not ignoring your post when I clearly disagree with it?

Posted by: Madmaxepic
I don't want to be trying to talk to someone, and they don't even know I'm there.
If they're already going to ignore everything you post, then what difference does it make?

No. It isn't a fair feature, and has the potential to be abused. It would mean someone could end up just completely ignored by everyone and isolated from the whole community, that would just be terrible. People would surely abuse it, blocking other users just because they disagree with their opinion, and for no other reason. Just ignore posts that are annoying, instead of generalizing users with, oh, this post sucks so he must just suck over all and I never want to see his posts again.

Another way this could be done is by making the ignore button only apply to the thread that the person is ignored in.

I would just click the ignore user button, and all the user's posts in that thread dissappear.

This is a discussion forum. If people didn't want any discussion at all they wouldn't come here. So why would they just block every user that they disagree with? That would be entirely pointless.

I don't know man, I've seen some pretty pointless things here.

I would also like to add that ignore/blocking feature has been in use for a few month successfully.

That "controversial" script I released that blocked a user has been downloaded over 300 times and is constantly requested. So all this "echo chamber" -blam!- is clearly not happening. Ken hasn't noticed any difference in his experience. I would call this idea a success and has passed testing.

I personally don't use it because I'm making a better version, but I know it's helping others in it's current state.

Webteam, make it happen.

P.S. don't get butt mad foman.

Hides posts from a user.
Hides threads from a user.
Hides user's name on last post.
Hide user's profile. (If you try to go to the users profile it redirects you back to yours if I remember correctly).

That's what Bungie need to add to the site.

What gives you the right to?
What on Earth are you talking about?

My right to ignore someone is something up for debate?
What's next, will my right to change the channel when a show comes on that I don't like be called into question? "Well people made this show so you need to be forced to ignore it."

A script I may actually download, if for nothing else but to test the waters. As for Ken, his reasons have been of nothing but paranoia, worried that everyone will just stick their fingers in their ears and shout "la, la, la" every time he speaks. I'm glad to see there's at least a small bit of gathered statistics that proves such reasoning is nonsense. Of course now that you've revealed this I'm sure there will be "Well I have felt a little more ignored than usual, now that you mention it." kind of reply.

I'm not particuarly interested in this feature personally, mainly because I wouldn't use it. For obvious reasons, I can't. But even if I wasn't a moderator, I most likely wouldn't. I like to take in the whole picture.

I do believe it would benefit other members though. Some folks get way too worked up over some specific people. They'd be better off just not having them around. It allows those members to control their own environmnt. If I don't like Apoc, he just doesn't exist in my world.

This doesn't really negatively affect him either. If I am willing to ignore him, there's probably not much I'm going to say to him that he wants or needs to read. And I'm a lot more calm.

Another reason I'm not a big fan is the idea of the echo chamber. Others have already mentioned some ideas to combat this such as collapsed posts or a reveal button. I would also throw out the idea that ignoring could work like a ban system. We could have 7 day, 14 day, 30 day, 60 day, or permanant options. That would give people the control to take a break from some individuals without writing them off forever.

I like this, would it be a pure replica of a ban? hidden posts and such?

These seem to be the only viable options in my opinion. If I'm sick of seeing someone to the point where I don't think they're worth the willpower to overlook their posts, it probably won't wear off in 1-2 weeks.

Please stop complaining about the 'death of a loved one' it's my job. They probably deserved it anyways. Here's a warning, if you keep making pentagrams out of the neighbors livestock I will personally come to your house and kill everyone you love. Now leave me alone, I got to get back to work.
~M.D~

that would be duh -blam!-. I think it would be good if they made that change
