Subject: Adding value to Bungie.net accounts...

Now, in the quantum moment before the closure, when all become one. One moment left. One point of space and time.

I know who you are.

You are Destiny.

@Foman

I've always wondered why the site moderators don't have access to IP addresses. It would only make sense to have the tools for that, for obvious reasons; but alas you don't. Hopefully those tools are available in the next iteration of Bungie.net. I can see it being a great help.

Old school Bungie, born and raised,
In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

IP address can easily be changed, and are worthless to track with ISPs that have a dynamic IP system.

Edit: I could be wrong. Network protocol is not my area of study.

I can not disagree with anything you said. There is a good chance that adding value to accounts will help, but incorporating a one user/one account system would need to be flawless to assure that more problems are fixed than created.

Ugh, just leave it the way it is.

I swear, everyone seems to think they can fix a system that isn't broke...

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

In now way is they system broken, it is just "okay". It is too easy to make new accounts and the incentive is low to want to keep your account.

Perhaps there are ways to work the Bungie beta program into an incentive package. Seems like an appropriate thing.

I feel like the biggest hurdle will be getting the user to see the value in their own account. Community projects and events where being recognized by name as a prominent member of the community would be very helpful. Think of people like Helveck, Duardo and Foman (before they were moderators), or some of the older guys like SS_Zag or Corvette_Halo. Thee were "household" names because they found ways to directly contribute to the community through their ideas, posts and user groups. Fostering this behavior to allow the community to do more building of itself would be a cure instead of Achronos just issuing a treatment.

Who the hell do you think I am?

If we're talking about "trolls" here, then there isn't anything we can do to get them to stay on one account.

The Forerunner, the Great Journey, and Heaven Theory

[Announcement Trailer] Halo: Forerunner

I lol'd at the absurd miscommunication that occurs whenever dibbs post something. Perhaps his brain is so highly evolved that he can no longer clearly communicate with lesser life forms, even among his own species.

I think there are a few really proven ways to add value to an account.

The first is straight up paying for it. If you invest money into something (so the theory goes) you're less likely to behave in a way that will damage or destroy the thing you paid for. I'm certainly not in favor of this option but it is a proven way to add value to something.

The second would be increased features for amount of time invested (for this website I would imagine a second clause would be "within a set standard of behavior and/or history of contribution"). I believe this way is the best solution to the account value problem here. Titles bars have been attempting to fulfill this purpose for a while (and are, imo, moderately effective in adding value to an account) but they aren't exactly privileges as much as they are just identification badges. With this option you tread a thin line. On one hand you want users to come into this website and not have to jump through hoops to get integrated, but on the other hand you want longtime, loyal members to get that extra something. One way to address this is to keep posting privileges exactly how they are now for anyone who joins, but long time members would gain access to things that we have been asking for (sent box, ignore feature, no anti-spam filter, etc - just something that will add that something "extra" to accounts that you wouldn't otherwise have).

The third way would be a combination of the first two, that is paying for those extra features. The best comparison I can use is the SA forums where if you pay money, you can get rid of advertisements, and edit other user's posts (I believe there are other features you get for paying as well but since I'm not a member, I don't know what the are). This isn't really the best of ideas imo, because users can choose whether or not they want to add value to their accounts or not as opposed to having it built into the system (via increasing rewards or paying to have any access at all).

The fourth is what Foman suggested; that is providing some piece of unique identification in order to register so that alt accounts become much more difficult to create. I think this is the best way to prevent the negatives which arise when accounts don't have much value, but that it is not as good of a way to actually add value to accounts as option two is.

What if we make it so accounts that are <2 months old have to write a captcha?

I'm trying to become an '04, but it's not working too well."

It's a weird question, to say the least.

Add more privileges for older members, restrict a few for younger?

Hmmmm.

Valid credit cards. You pay $1 for every ban. :-)

I'd be a poor man.

I highly doubt that adding anymore value to accounts will stop users from breaking the rules or making alternate accounts, but that's just my opinion.
