Trying something once will increace your chances of success, because you tried it. Try someting twice, and your chances increase yet again - seeing as you've done it. Try something a few thousand times, and your chances of success is exponentially increased; this increase would likely provide success every time

So I've been thinking about quote notifications and how we could make them pleasingly simple. The most common idea is something similar to receiving a message with an option to toggle whether you've "subscribed" to a thread. It would do the job - effectively - but I'm purposing a different kind of notification; when you want to see it & whichever thread you want - with quiet a few less clicks.

What I have in mind is when you reply to a thread, the image of the thread (the Webmaster & Septagon) is directly altered if there are any quotes of you in the thread; I was thinking our Webmaster aside a quote bubble (with or without a number). A very simple identifier for every thread that you've been quoted. This, of course, means that you could only see the notifications you want to see & in which threads.

Clicking the Webmaster would put a little drop-down underneath the thread; providing details like who quoted you and which page their quote is on (with a link to the quote). Clicking the Webmaster again would close the drop-down.

The only issue I personally see - as far as implementation - is that on all threads the Webmaster spot is also a link to the thread. Perhaps this could change with the Newest Hawtness incoming? Meh, I'm just getting the idea out there - I'm not exactly settled on it myself.

Thoughts?

I don't know if it's possible at the moment considering quoting someone is done entirely through BBCode and text and not actually a feature. I guess. If that makes sense. I'm not quite sure how I want to word and and I'm not quite sure if I'm right but... yeah.

"You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don't try to forget the mistakes, but you don't dwell on it. You don't let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space." -Johnny Cash

It sounds like a cool idea, but I would rather have quote notifications via the PM system.

Who the hell do you think I am?

They could create another inbox for these notifications alone.

"I don't care if it's God's own anti-Son of a -blam!- Machine or a giant hula-hoop!"

I wonder what the server strain would be...

Anyways, I think we really need a quote notification system, especially before any new information release.

Chop chop!

Now to make things a little clear, it's quiet obvious we won't get a notification system till the newest hawtness when things will change. So it's not like it'd be added work if a notification system is on the way. I'd imagine the strain wouldn't be much different than PM notifications - which I've always been quiet fond of.

Bye.

Would it only notify you in the case of direct qoute-age? So if someone quotes me I get a notification but if someone quotes them with my quote still inside I wouldn't be notified?

And as always, SEND ME A PM. Please. Or really bad things will happen to you.

Quote notifications won't work until quoting is done by some means other than BBCode. For example:

Huehuehue you now have a notification from a thread you never participated in!

The site has to parse your text before it actually changes BBCode to HTML, so the idea of alerting people whenever a quote with their name is parsed is entirely feasible. A bad idea, though, as Rokit noted, because you can tag anyone anywhere. However, I'm sure they can work around that by just removing quoting as BBCode and making it so that you cannot change what has been quoted. Like, it'd show up in the thing above where you type your reply, but not in the actual textbox. It'd be easier to alert them this way as well.

Also, yes, "subscribing" to threads is a great idea. I think it'd be cool to be able to turn it on/off entirely, as well as universally vs. per subscribed thread. E.g., I want no notifications, I only want notifications from threads I pick, I want notifications whenever I am quoted anywhere on the site, etc.

Yussir, perhaps a subset if more people quoted a person who quoted you, but that'd be kind of annoying - definitely only for the very curious.

Well, they could just make a quoting system. Each quote is assigned an ID (or the quote is tied to the postID) and you only get one notification for each quote. This could be customized, such as "yeah, alert me every time a quote with my name pops up" or "only once per quote".

However, I'm almost positive it's too late for suggestions like this. Last I talked to Achronos he sounded like he was in a real hurry, and subtly noted it himself. I'm betting that the site update will go live on the 31st of March or the 1st of April, so big things like this probably can't be squeezed in by then.

All conjecture, of course.

Wouldn't it be better to have a profile page which shows all your activity? I could display all your posts, all the threads you have voted in, the times you have gotten quoted, groups joined, groups left, group posts (group posts only seen by your or people who are members of the same groups as you).

You would have one page for public forum activity, and then you could limit it to each forum and also date and time. And you'll also have something dedicated to your activity in private groups.

Basically the "home page" of your activity would list all your activity in the public forums.

This would obviously have privacy settings, and you could set if only you or everyone else would be able to see it. (perhaps this speaks in favor of the introduction of a friends list, so that your activity can be shared with them?)

Definitely a page for private chapters, but that be different than the public one I guess. Like everyone would be able to see which groups you join and leave, and also if you post any public news stories, but other than that you'd need to be in the same private group to see that particular feed (group posts, polls, private news stories etc). And of course there would need to be certain search parameters available; news posts, posts + polls, group joined/left/created (these would probably all be included in the same option).

As for the idea you detailed in your OP; it could work. There are a few "if's" though. The wrong way to go about it (as you said) would be to change the icon on all the threads you are quoted in (or rather threads where there are activity related to you), because if you are as active as say, spartain ken, then pretty much all the threads on this site would light up like an alligator at a crocodile party. However, if you were able to "tag" threads you find interesting, then some kind of change notification would be in order.

One concern I have in regards to just changing this is how this would work in really, really active threads. You don't really see those threads now, but when Destiny finally hits you can be damn sure that the popular threads regarding the game will hit hundreds of replies in a matter of hours. What if you made a great post and you were quoted 15 times? What you need is a notification system which at least gives you some idea of where people quoted you. If you made a post on page three, then four people quoted you on page 9 plus another three people on page 26 it would be a real hassle to track down these posts. The in-profile activity page could provide with links to each different post in which there are activity related to threads.

I guess it could be something like this:

You posted in Destiny Release Date Announced.
Click here to view all your activity in this thread.

Then again using several pages to navigate is always bad. There more you have available with less clicks the better.

So perhaps just a search feature where you can search your posts by thread? This would obviously also allow you to sort all the activity related to you by thread.

On a side note I also think it would be a good idea to let us mods be able to post in "rule mode", meaning that if I give clarification on a rule then the icon would change similar to what you see when an employee post. Perhaps just an a large exclamation mark would do the job. With a Septagon underneath it instead of just a dot.

I've actually suggested that before, except with Employees. Give Employees and Mods the option to check a box or something when they submit, which would give them the special icon. This way, the Employees and Qbix could post all of the silly stuff that they want without everyone going into that thread just because an Employee posted there, but at the same time could mark a thread when their post is actually valuable. Do the same for the Mods. Make the icon a stick of TNT. TNT rocks.

As long as this same feature also toggles your appearance; rule with one, casual common like the rest the other.

I agree with most of the points you made. I'm not too sure about going as far as miniscule details like joining/leaving group activity. It sounds exactly like a activity feed - the whole general idea - which would be kind of neat; a little much, but definitely neat.

I'd go further, but my mobile hates me when I make a big post. If this thread stays, I'll expand when I get home.

Considering the job of the Ninjas is, while in a slightly different manner (more on a personal basis than as a group) to act as the Bungie.net Supreme Court and set precedent, I think something like this would be extremely helpful.

Heheh.

To be fair, I'm fine as the system is. However, if you really wanted something like this, the suggestion of having it under your profile page is always a viable option. It's out of the way, and doesn't interfere with anything else.
