Just wanted to know if there were any systems in place to take care of some of the networking issues we all know and love in Halo 2. I'm not too familiar with Xbox 360, but does it still use the System link protocol, or has it moved to TCP/IP?

Will the xbox live system still give "host" based solely on NAT 'openness' or will it rely on more criteria?

A great feature to have implemented is the option to use a console as a dedicated server. This would be a favorite for tournaments and custom-game grudge matches as well.

Bungie hasn't released any info as far as MP goes. I think all of your ideas are good, and I'm definitely a fan of dedicated servers.

the dedicated servers would need to be Bungie's. if u had players w/ a dedicated xbox server there's still the chance of modding in at least custom gaming.
I would think that if Bungie did have ded. servers that they'd be used for matchmaking at least maybe more, i doubt it. just leave customs for other players to host. hope u can follow my train of thought

Bungie has already said that they are not using dedicated servers.

i like that idea, that way it won't get bogged down with misc. games so matchmaking wont suffer from it. the only thing i'm worried about with dedicated servers is whether or not bungie will have the proper hardware support and who is going to pay for it.

Yeah, they probably wouldn't work because right up until they are implimented everyone would want them, then when you find out how much it is costing the average gamers it would end up as the worst idea in history. Xbox to Xbox is really the only way to go.
Besides, it's harder to mod now anyway so the only problem is Standbyers/Bridgers and Bungie needs to take care of that issue.

Yes, but the option to have a dedicated server/view mode would be nice for custom games. Suppose two players want to go head to head in a custom game. Having a third person host the game without actually being in the game (a la observer mode) would eliminate the bickering over host that takes place in these grudge matches.

Not only that, its fun to watch. I don't think it is too much to ask, since all they would need to do is make the "host" stuck perminately in observer mode, putting a high process priority on the networking portion of the game. Its just a thought. A little customization never hurt anyone, and makes players like myself happy and interested.

Bridgers and stanbyers will definately be gone. They won't really have to make any big changes for that to happen. I'd be extremely surprised to see this not be fixed. A simple conneciton test/policy that operates under the assumption that a client who can only connect to one host and only that one host is impossible and probably is up to no good.

Enough rambling.. Any bungie input on this? Optional dedicated server mode for party leader to select? As well as a selectable spectator mode that would be selectable in the same way team colors are selectable. Online tournaments would benefit big time from this..

PS: I agree, public dedicated servers would be a bad idea. It would cost money, give an advantage to the group of people closest in terms of ping/latency, and probably be exploited by desperate cheaters via DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack. Overall, bad idea.

aaaa, but there you present another problem. bungie cannot really put anything in place to prevent network manipulation, due to the fact that the network in and of itself is not bungies "domain" if you will. they could do something with the code so that when it recognizes something wrong it could sieze the game or something but as far as completely prevented something that they have no responsibility for, thats a pretty high demand.

hypothetically speaking the cost of servers could be spread out to the point where it is not that bad. think about it this way. say there were 1 million xbox live users that played halo live regularily. then say bungie intituted a $10/year charge for the use and upkeep of servers. 1 million times 10, is ten million dollars a year people. i find it hard to believe that the equipment and overhead would be more then 10 million dollars a year. and that is avery doable. i don't know the exact numbers of how many people play halo live, but i think you get the picture.

Preventing network manipulation is easy. Make a moderately open NAT a requirement of the game. This gives them the authority to assume that a player that can only connect to one ip address and no other ip address is up to no good. I don't care how strict of a firewall you are behind, you'll be able to connect to more than one person.

Bump. Awaiting any input, whether it be official or not. If the game is going to be built upon a new engine.. then that would clarify big time.

Haven't heard if the game will support 720p or not. Anyone else who has any technical questions.. post here. Anything about masterchief or elites.. you have a billion other threads to choose from.

M$ has made all developers of 360 games make their games available in 720p. Given that this is the case, yes, Halo 3 will support HD formats.

Dedicated servers would rock, cheaters need to die.

Just think how expensive that would be, though. That'd be a lot of servers.

Bungie isn't going to have dedicated servers, the cost would be astronomical. They don't make money from your XBL subscription, they make money from selling games.

  • 05.22.2006 7:12 PM PDT

"You have been measured, you have been weighed: And you have been found lacking."

the 360 is TCP/IP I believe.

I certainly hope they up the code... that is the point of new games after all..
Bigger, better, faster... more processing power..

im not too big of a gamer but if there are deticated servers would we still be able to create custom games and edit them the way we want like in halo 1 and halo 2?
