Welcome to the internet. Joy dies here.
Ooh - another good example of knowledge not translating into skill; I'm a pokemon master - I know every move on every pokemon, all the abilities, hold items, and their most useful movesets. I know how to EV train them for their optimal stat spread, and I know how to progressively breed better stats until they hit 'perfect'. Don't have any perfect pokemon though, because I don't have the weeks to dump into breeding to legitimately get them.
My pokemon are solid - I can wall you with a Luvdisc at level 30 - but I don't have a line that would be considered 'competitive'.
I can discuss at length (in a very well-informed manner) the mechanics involved in competitive battles. Don't have what it takes to compete in them though.
That said, my 'casual' battles are challenging, well thought out, and utilize the majority of the meta-game strategies that 'competitive' players use.
But a twelve year old can out-compete me because he/she has all the time in the world to train and breed, despite not understanding the mechanics involved nearly as well as I do. They just read a simple primer on how to prep top end pokemon, and follow the directions.
tl;dr I can make you cry using a heart shaped fish
