put it this way...it fills a room and there are tens of thousands of people on the website (not on all together, mind you). So it doesn't really matter how many servers they are, but rather what kind of servers they are.

Why would it matter what kind they are as long as they don't crash it doesn't matter.

(10:20:17 PM) Pezza: You were the one with the video camera breathing heavily. Of course you saw.

Something tells me that the plan to distract the Bungie Webmaster with "decoy servers" is working nicely.

Look! A distraction!

It is a network of 2 386 computers, an atari, and a gameboy held together by duct tape. This is an industry secret.

That's not true. The quality of the servers + the number of the servers = an highly elastic and expandable dynamic content delivery service. Google has an estimated 30,000-70,000 computers--and clearly those going to be cutting edge blade servers. Google intentionally has a image-low site to keep the bandwidth-sucking serving costs down.

Either way: for big sites, it's quality and quantity. I guarentee you that Bungie.net is not running on a couple hundred of these.

All you need is duct tape and chewing gum. The actual power of the computers is unimportant. Just grab a few dozen Ataris and 286s. All you have to do is have some fun McGuyver, Home Improvement, and Red/Green Show action.

That was the AC for the entire server farm, not just the webservers. It takes a stupid amount of processing power and time to light levels on the scale of a game, you're talking days and days of 100% cpu usage on multiple 8-core beasts, i suspect that the AC was more for them than the webserver cluster.

Aagh! I don't even care about the status of your servers but does it really need to be so CIA hush-hush? I fail to see any potential vulnerability stemming from the knowledge of how many servers you have. Maybe it's there but we're not talking about how many Secret Service agents will be present at a Presidential hearing. We're talking about a forum for a video game company. Come on, if you wanted to give a non-answer you could have just ignored the post.

Mourne not your comrades who must dwell / too strong to strive -
Within each steel-bound coffin of a cell, / Buried alive;
But rather mourne the apathetic throng / The cowed, and the meek -
Who see the world’s great anguish and its wrong / And dare not speak.

But non-answers are so much more fun.

And the CIA has nothing on B.net.
