Mods are busy people, and often miss threads that probably ought to be locked, yet manage to live on for sometimes multiple pages. Anyone that frequents the Flood or (god forbid) the Halo Reach forum, you've probably seen this frequently.

So, if the OP's first post gets enough reports to be hidden, do you think the entire thread should be locked automatically?

Why do people in ship mutinies always ask for "better treatment"? I'd ask for a pinball machine, because with all that rocking back and forth, you'd get a lot of free games.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words - "mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

Nope.

Nope. It's far too easy to abuse the report button. Because of that good threads that aren't rule breaking could be locked for a long time.

Mods can lock/unlock threads, so if they think the reports are in error, it could be re-opened again. I believe the case you're speaking of would definitely be the minority.

Nope, there a thread right now where Americans reported a guy for asking if Whitehouse had a website

Why should the thread have to wait? That's not fair.

I don't think it would be helpful. There's almost always a moderator online, and the report function should be just that. A way of reporting things to moderators. There's plenty of things I report that I, personally, wouldn't lock, but I think it's something the moderators should either take a look at or watch closely.

If you're referring to the one on the Flood, it's accusing President Obama of not following through with his promises. That thread is exactly why I made this one.

  • 02.27.2012 9:23 AM PDT

No, there are always that group of people who would go around reporting random threads in an attempt to get them locked.

And what happens if the thread doesn't get unlocked for several hours? A perfectly legitimate thread falls victim to some report button abusers, and he pays the price by having his thread locked, which would essentially kill it? No thank you.

Could be abused

No. If this was the way the system worked, it would be abused very easily.

Feel free to send me messages, please be willing to wait 6-8 years for a reply.

1-7 hours if you at least tried to make it readable.

Immediately if you are Yax, Telec, or legendary.

Never if you are mythic, you guys smell funny.

Far too many users see the report button as the "I do not agree with what this user posted" button for this to work.

Absolutely not. That's a terrible idea, and one that could easily be abused.

What if I get twenty friends to go around reporting threads we don't like so they become locked? Who's going to detect our transgressions if the moderators never look at locked threads? Or are we going to include a "report the people who reported this thread" button on every thread locked in this fashion? Either way, the moderator is still going to have to review the thread to see if it was worth locking, so I don't see why we shouldn't just stick with the current system we have.

The second people realise that they have the power to lock threads, chaos will spread. Not worth it whatsoever. Locked threads are examples to the common people of threads which are against the rules (or less commonly just finished). So they are important in that sense. The padlock represents the divine authority and swift justice of the eternal brotherhood of law and order. The people cannot stay in order themselves, justice, law, order and balance must be brought upon by the chosen and not by the common man...

If a post is reported, YOU think it's against the rules, but that doesn't mean it actually is, which is why the ninjas take a look at what's reported and determine the appropriate action. That appropriate action could be a ban, or a warning, or locking a thread, and maybe even doing nothing at all; but that's not for you to decide.
