In the original Halo on the level Truth and Rec. when you rescue captain Keyes he informs you that he overheard his guards speak about the ring world. Keyes states that his guards spoke about how they call it "Halo" and how they believe it to be a weapon.

Then why exactly in Halo 2 do the Covenant believe the Rings to pocess some spiritual journey? The Aribiter surely would have known the rings were weapons as he was the commander of the fleet at alpha halo.

I honestly cant find an answer, other then perhaps the Arbiter never was at Halo, but commanded the Fleet from High Charity. The fleet at Halo was completely destoryed according to Cortana at the end of the original Halo which makes little sense if the Arbiter escaped in tact.

According to the novels, ships arrived on the scene of its destruction too late and began searching the remains. Perhaps that was the fleet that the Arbiter led but no one can know for sure. As it is, its kinda a flaw in the storyline, and it makes me wonder what will happen in Halo 3 reguarding the story.

Sorry, I suppose this relates more to Halo 2's storyline curve then talking about Halo 3...feel free to move/lock this unless you feel its appropriate.

-Its a MG42!
-My favorite color is bubble shield

maybe they needed a superweapon to make the great journey to somewhere mythical. TO defeat a demon or something

-OR-

Maybe they thought they could suvive the weapon and thought they were very holy. They would then own the universe.

the Prophets told the Convenant that Halo was not a weapon but the gateway to the Great Journey..its up to the Prophets to interpert the Forerunners meanings and no one would dare question what they said..unless they were heretic like in part 2...hmmmmm..

i agree with this part of what you said. it wouldn't suprise me that after seeing halo for the first time in al it's granduer that the covie soldiers would think such a thing, and considering how the prophets so effectivally spin things to their advantage, it makes a lot of sense.

Maybe MC went into a parallel universe between Halo 1 and Halo 2. (Like that Star Trek episode)

Hence, the Master Chief which the Covenant called a demon, and he is pretty much impossible to stop, so the obvious answer would be a superweapon. The Master Chief stopped the first Halo from activating, so he could be seen as a demon blocking the path of the Great Journey like moneyburner said.

I believe it is the Prophets who brought the idea of the Halos being a method of propelling them to salvation through death. What needs to be questioned is what exactly the Flood/Gravemind are after, why can't Gravemind be given a certain part of the Universe to control?

Cortana is the one who says that the covenant think it was a weapon. She wasn't interpreting the information correctly.

No, Keyes does, and Cortana confirms that she has seen covenant reports of them searching for something which she then assumes is the control room. Trust me, I just played it.

Also, perhaps the concept about the prophets could be correct. It is possible that thats the reason why Truth knows about the true purpose of Halo. The Aribiter and his fleet that fled the destruction could have recieved some records from the other ships that were there. It is possible that Truth took this knowledge and then spread a lie. The Arbiter may have not gotten a chance to look at the data, or was informed not to. Its kinda up in the air.

Crappy Theory Time! Truth could be tricking the Covenant into activating the Halo's and killing themselves while Truth (on the forerunner ship) goes to the Ark an then.......he....uh......rules the galaxy or something...

No, Keyes does,

Cortana says:

One moment Sir. Accessing Covenant battlenet. (Pause) According to the data in their networks, the ring has some kind of deep religious significance. If I'm analyzing this correctly...they believe that Halo is some kind of weapon. One with vast, unimaginable power.

She wasn't analyzing the information correctly. It wasn't until First Strike that Cortana developed a really good way to translate the covenant language.

But you must remember that a second is like a minute, possibly half an hour or something like that haven't read the books in long time.

Well think about it. If you a Prophet and you want to get rid of the universe of life forms what would you do? I personally would brainwash some other species to do the heavy lifting, dust off the ancient megaweapons floating around in space, climb inside the Ark where its safe and hit that big red button and watch everyone outside burn away.

Poor old Covenant, bunch of gullible numpties.

Just another theory I read or something.....you know I can't really remember where I got that. Oh well.
EDIT: I mean the Ark makes you immune to the Halos thing, I forgot to add the quote from the other guy.

yea thats not the first time i've seen that. i think your like the 3rd guy i've seen post that. and i don't see how it makes much sense. guilty spark said that the forerunners died as a result of firing halo as a last resort. if they could survive in the ark why wouldn't they go their and then fire it remotely.

I have been wondering the same thing for a long time because I see so many theories revolving around this question

because if you are not immune while inside the ark there is no way humans are descendants of forerunner.

Alright, yes ok, i do remember now. Was thinking of the conversation out of order. Even still, she was correct. I doubt that her translation of the Covenant beliefs on the matter would have been wrong, yet also correct. There is too much irony there. Although, the fact that Truth has an agenda of some form is odd, because he does command the Great Journey to prgress via Tartarus?

There is in my mind still a gap there. After all, Cortana was correct in Halo being a weapon, one which the Covenant revere as holy, and that they were searching for the control room. It seems all too ironic if you say that she misinterpreted what the Covenant ment, but in truth she was correct.

Also, why would Truth take the Forrunner vessel to Earth when the Great Journey was about to Begin? Unless there is a time difference and Truth arrived at earth and planned to enter the Ark before the activation of Halo.

keyes assumed it was a weapon like hamdog said. He heard the covenant say whoever controls halo controls the fate of the universe or something like that so he assumed it was a weapon. The covenant dont know its a weapon they think it will take them to the great journey.
