In terms of best competitive FPS ever, I'd have to go with Unreal Tournament 2004. Fast movement speeds, small hitboxes (I could count the times I get headshots in a single match on one hand), double jumps/dodges, tons of mutators, awesome mod support, advanced stat tracking, and the list goes on. I still even play with bots to this day. (The community is so terrible now that I can't stand playing online multiplayer. :/)
For a FPS game I'd play casually, Halo: Combat Evolved takes the cake easily. I think you all know my reasoning for that.
The best video game ever is a really hard decision. I've been a gamer for almost my entire life and have experienced many things. Through all the different genres, I don't think I can choose just one. In most cases, it's like comparing a luxurious van to a Lamborghini. If I want to go out with the family on a road trip, I take that van. If I want to feel like a bad ass, I'd go with the Lamborghini. I would go into detail about my favorite in each genre, but I feel I've made this post too long as it is.
TL;DR:
Best Competitive FPS: UT2k4
Best Casually Played FPS: Halo: Combat Evolved (I prefer playing casually over competitively as well)
Best Overall: No way I could say. Too many to choose through too many genres.
Edit: Besides, how could you not love the bad ass feeling you get from hearing this while you're playing a fast paced FPS shooter?
